Thompson's Point is a promontory and entertainment venue in the Libbytown neighborhood of Portland, Maine, United States. It is located around 1.7 miles (2.7 km) southwest of downtown Portland, on the northern banks of the Fore River. It sits across the river from the outflow of Long Creek in South Portland. Interstate 295 and U.S. Route 1 pass beside it to the east.Thompson's Point served as a port for barge and boat traffic on the Cumberland and Oxford Canal in the 19th century. Several historic brick structures remain from its days as a train repair and storage facility in the second half of the 19th century, due to its proximity to Pan Am Railways' Mountain Branch line, formerly the Mountain Division of the Maine Central Railroad. Today, it is a venue for outdoor summer concerts and ice-skating in the winter.The Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine moved here from Free Street, beside the Portland Museum of Art, in 2020.

Portland Transportation Center is a bus and train station in Portland, Maine, United States, served and run primarily by Concord Coach Lines (18 round-trips a day) and Amtrak Downeaster passenger trains (five round-trips a day). It is also served by Megabus (via Concord Coach Lines), as well as the Greater Portland Metro route 1 and BREEZ bus services. The station is open from 4:30 AM to 12:15 AM and from 2:45 AM to 3:15 AM.Portland Transportation Center is located in Portland's Libbytown neighborhood, about a half mile west of the former site of Portland Union Station. It is located next to Pan Am Railways' Mountain Branch, formerly the Mountain Division of the Maine Central Railroad. In 2019, the NNERPA Board (which governs the Downeaster service) supported a proposal to relocate the station to the mainline to avoid time-consuming backup moves. A two-year study by the Maine Department of Transportation endorsed moving Amtrak service from this station to a location near that of Portland's original Union Station, on St. John's Street.

Libbytown is a neighborhood in Portland, Maine, United States. One of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, it is located between the Stroudwater, Rosemont, Oakdale, and Parkside neighborhoods, and is separated from the city of South Portland by the Fore River. It extends to the intersection of Stevens Avenue and Congress Street. It was originally settled by Irish Catholic immigrants. Described as cohesive, it began to decline following the 1961 demolition of Union Station on St. John Street. Around the same time, the neighborhood was divided by the construction of Interstate 295 and the cloverleaf interchange which comprise exit 5. A long-standing Denny's restaurant occupied an area formerly known as Libby's Corner, between Park Avenue to the north and Congress Street to the south. It closed in 2022, and was purchased by the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT). It was demolished in March 2024. MaineDOT plans to construct a roundabout in an attempt to reconnect the neighborhood over sixty years after the division. Park Avenue and Congress Street would return to being two-way streets. The project was given a $22.4 million federal grant as part of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods Program. Maine's busiest public transit hub, the Portland Transportation Center, is in Libbytown. Tony's Donuts, a donut shop on Bolton Street, was established in the neighborhood in 1965.

Deacon John Bailey House is a residential building in Portland, Maine, United States. The home, which is located at 1235 Congress Street, was built between 1730 and 1756, when the city was part of the Province of Massachusetts Bay. Greater Portland Landmarks, a preservation group, calls it "one of the most important Pre-Revolutionary War-era houses in the city." It is believed that the bricks for the home's floor and hearth were fired on-site. Originally a one-storey property, a second level was added by John Bailey's son, Benjamin, in 1807. In 1899, the property's location, on the northern side of Congress Street (then at number 1175), was given as being "between Libby's Corner and Bradley's Corner." It was occupied at the time by Helen M. Bailey, great-granddaughter of John and sister of previous owner, Captain Francis H. Bailey. After John's death, the home passed to son Benjamin, then to grandson Jeremiah. It is one of the few buildings to have survived the 1775 burning of Falmouth and the great fire of 1866. The Historic American Building Survey surveyed the building in 1936. As of 2024, the property is owned by Heller Washam Antiques.

Northern Light Mercy Hospital is a not-for-profit community hospital in Portland, Maine. It was founded in 1918 by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland and the Sisters of Mercy to provide excellent healthcare, especially to the poor and disadvantaged. Mercy is located on a 42-acre campus overlooking the Fore River.

The Cumberland County Jail is located in Portland, Maine, and is the largest jail in the state. The jail, a division of the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, is a part of Cumberland County government and is wholly operated by the elected Sheriff. In 2002 it became the first jail in the state of Maine to receive national accreditation from the American Correctional Association, at the time putting it among only 4% of adult correctional facilities in the US to have been so accredited. It has the capacity to accommodate 600 inmates, and employs over 200 staff (including 130 Corrections Officers). Most inmates are serving short sentences or awaiting trial.

Veterans Memorial Bridge is a bridge in Maine, United States, connecting the cities of Portland and South Portland. The bridge spans the Fore River and is part of U.S. Route 1. The original Veterans Memorial Bridge was built in 1954, and was described as 'rapidly deteriorating' prior to its demolition. Designated a top infrastructure priority by Maine state government, a new bridge was built between 2010 and 2012. General contractor Reed & Reed, of Woolwich, was awarded the rebuilding contractor. Reed & Reed estimated the new bridge would stand for a century.

Union Station was a train station in Portland, Maine, which was inoperation between 1888 and 1960. It was demolished in 1961 and is now the site of a strip mall.

The former Maine Central Railroad General Office Building is an historic office building at 222-242 Saint John Street in the Saint John Valley neighborhood of Portland, Maine. Built in stages between 1889 and 1916, it was home to the Maine Central Railroad Company, the state's largest railroad operator. It is also one of the city's largest office buildings, and a fine example of Romanesque Revival architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

St. John Street is a street in Portland, Maine, United States. It runs for around 1.34 miles (2.16 km) from Brighton Avenue (part of Maine State Route 25), in the north, to Valley Street, in the south. It crosses Park Avenue (part of Maine State Route 22) and Congress Street and passes beneath Interstate 295. Both St. John Street and adjacent Valley Street were built upon land occupied by Portland's poor farm. St. John Street is named for St. John Smith (1876–1944), a landowner friend and business partner of industrialist John Bundy Brown. The city's Union Station stood in Railroad Square on St. John Street between 1888 and 1961, when it was demolished and replaced with today's Union Station Plaza strip mall. Beside that location, to the south, is the Maine Central Railroad General Office Building, which was completed in 1916. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A spur of the Portland and Ogdensburg Railway from Union Station crosses Maine Central Railroad's trestle bridge at St. John Street and Park Avenue. The line continues behind Hadlock Field and Fitzpatrick Stadium before ending at Forest Avenue, beside Deering Oaks Park. The Inn at St. John (formerly the Hotel Victoria), which stands at the intersection of St. John Street and Congress Street, has been in operation since 1897. Its location was chosen because of its proximity to Union Station. St. John Street was the home to Portland's first McDonald's. It is still in operation. Portland's Greyhound bus station was formerly located at the intersection of St. John Street and Congress Street. The building, constructed in 1961, closed in 2019, after 32 years of ownership by Greyhound. Buses now depart from the park and ride lot on Marginal Way.

Florence House is a 31⁄2 story building in Portland, Maine, United States, named after Florence Young "a social worker who spent more than 20 years working at Preble Street."The building was created to help end homelessness. Florence House is based on the Housing First model, a strategy to help move women from homelessness to a permanent supportive home environment. Florence House can house 50 or more former homeless women. The building includes 25 efficiency apartments, a safe-haven area with 15 semi-private spaces and 10 to 25 emergency shelter beds The $7.9 million facility was completed on April 6, 2009. It was developed by Preble Street and Avesta Housing and received state and federal funding as well as private contributions. The opening in April, 2009 (five years after the project started) was attended by Maine Governor John Baldacci, Shaun Donovan (Secretary of Housing and Urban Development — HUD), Senator Olympia Snowe, Senator Susan Collins, Representative Chellie Pingree, and other dignitaries.

Hadlock Field is a minor league baseball stadium in Portland, Maine. It is primarily home to the Portland Sea Dogs of the Eastern League but also the Portland High School Bulldogs and Deering High School Rams baseball teams. The stadium is named for Edson B. Hadlock Jr., a long-time Portland High School baseball coach and physics teacher and member of the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame.
