Mea Shearim

The Meah Shearim Yeshiva and Talmud Torah is a yeshiva in the Meah Shearim quarter of Jerusalem. It was established in 1885. The head of the yeshiva was Rabbi Yosef Gershon Horowitz, one of the leaders of the Mizrachi movement. During the British Mandate, the building served as the headquarters of Mizrahi in Jerusalem. The study hall on the second floor has a magnificent painted ceiling with depictions of Jewish holy places, the Jewish holidays, biblical animals and memorials for the deceased. The artist, Yitzhak Beck, carried out the work on special scaffoldings built for him. The paintings have begun to deteriorate with age and efforts are being made to preserve them.

A terrorist attack took place on the night of March 7, 2002 at the Otzem Pre-Military Preparatory School in the Israeli settlement of Atzmona in the Gaza Strip in which five of the seminary students were killed and twenty-three were injured.

A Palestinian suicide bombing occurred in the Beit Yisrael neighborhood in downtown Jerusalem on March 2, 2002. Eleven Israeli civilians were killed in the attack, including two infants, three children and two teenagers. Over 50 people were injured in the attack, four of them critically. The bombing took place at the entrance of the Haredi yeshiva "Beit Yisrael" in central Jerusalem where people had gathered for a bar mitzvah celebration. The suicide bomber detonated the bomb full of shrapnel alongside a group of women with their baby strollers, waiting for the services in a nearby synagogue to conclude. The Palestinian militant organization al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades claimed responsibility for the attack.

Beit Yisrael (Hebrew: בית ישראל, lit. House of Israel) is a predominantly Haredi neighborhood in central Jerusalem. It is located just north of Mea Shearim on Ha-Rav Zonenfeld St 13. The name Beit Yisrael is taken from the verse in Ezekiel 36:10, in which Ezekiel prophesies to the hills and mountains of Israel, "I shall make numerous on you the people, the entire House of Israel; the cities will be reinhabited and the ruins will be rebuilt." According to tradition, the neighborhood is built on the location on which the sacrificial remnants of the Second Temple were disposed.

Batei Ungarin (Hebrew: בתי אונגרין, lit. Hungarian Houses) is a Haredi Jewish neighborhood in Jerusalem, north-east of the Old City of Jerusalem. It was built by Kolel Ungarin, a Hungarian Jewish charity supporting Jews living in the Land of Israel.

The Mir Yeshiva (Hebrew: ישיבת מיר, Yeshivas Mir), known also as The Mir, is an Orthodox Jewish yeshiva in Beit Yisrael, Jerusalem. With over 9,000 single and married students, it is the largest yeshiva in the world. Most students are from the United States, United Kingdom and Israel, with many from other parts of the world such as Belgium, France, Mexico, Switzerland, Argentina, Australia, Russia, Canada and Panama.

The Kidane Mehret Church (Ge'ez for "Covenant of Mercy") in Jerusalem, popularly known simply as the Ethiopian Church, is part of the Debre Genet (ደብረ ገነት) monastery, whose name means "Monastery of Paradise".The monastery and its church belong to the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. It is one of two Ethiopian monasteries in Jerusalem, along with Deir Sultan, Debre Genet being located in West Jerusalem and Deir Sultan in the Old City.

The Batei Warsaw (Warsaw Houses) quarter in Mea She'arim neighborhood of Jerusalem was built in the Ottoman period as a by Kollel Polen (Poland) Warsaw, for Polish Torah scholars. Their families receive apartments for key money or low rent. The neighbourhood consists of two rows of two-story houses parallel with the “Mea Shearim” Street and “Chayei Adam” Street. Kollel Polin Warsaw established the neighbourhood for poor scholars. Raising money to build the area began in 1885. the land was purchased in 1891 by Joshua Helfman. Although the lot was purchased already in 1891, fundraising difficulties delayed the construction of the neighbourhood. In 1894, philanthropist Rabbi Shraga Jacob ben R' Isaac of Lublin Tennenwurzel donated the rest of the money and the houses were named "נחלת יעקב" ("inheritance of Jacob"). In a newspaper report (חבצלת May 13, 1898) stated: the now consist 65 houses for rentals, for five years per family, after which it leave the apartment to other members of the Kollel. In 1924, the philanthropist David Weingarten donated money to add a second story.

The Ministry of Education (Hebrew: מִשְׂרָד הַחִנּוּךְ, translit. Misrad HaHinukh; Arabic: وزارة التربية والتعليم) is the branch of the Israeli government charged with overseeing public education institutions in Israel. The department is headed by the Minister of Education, who is a member of the cabinet. The ministry has previously included culture and sport, although this is now covered by the Ministry of Culture and Sport.

Tabor House (Beit Tavor in Hebrew) is a landmark building in Jerusalem, Israel.Tabor House was built in 1882 by archaeologist, missionary and architect Conrad Schick as a home for his family. The building is located at 58 Street of the Prophets. The name was taken from Psalm 89:12: "The north and the south, Thou has created them; Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in Thy name." Palm leaves with the carved Greek letters Alpha and Omega decorate the façade. Schick lived in the house until his death in 1901. In 1951, the house was purchased by Swedish Protestants who established the Swedish Theological Institute there. The building, with a turret and thick stone walls, contains a small church, two libraries and a shaded interior courtyard.

Street of the Prophets (Hebrew: רחוב הנביאים, Rehov HaNevi'im) is an east–west axis road in Jerusalem beginning outside Damascus Gate and ending at Davidka Square. Located to the north of Jaffa Road, it bisects the neighborhood of Musrara. During its heyday in the late 19th century and early 20th century, Street of the Prophets was a favorite address for hospitals, churches, monasteries, hospices, government offices, foreign consulates, and wealthy Christian, Jewish and Muslim residents. Today the street still boasts the same heterogeneous mix of residents and workers, as well as schools, hospitals, churches and government offices. The elegant 19th-century architecture gives Street of the Prophets the appellation of "most beautiful street outside the Old City", while its historic buildings make it the most popular site for guided tours outside the Old City.

The Swedish Theological Institute (STI) is an institute in Jerusalem supported by the Church of Sweden. Christian students of theology can gain a deeper understanding of Judaism at the Institute, and also of Christianity and Islam.
