Hereford, Maryland

The Hereford Zone is an area in Northern Baltimore County, Maryland, United States, constituting 20% of all of the land in Baltimore County. It includes Hereford, Parkton, Monkton, Freeland, Sparks, White Hall, Jacksonville, Upperco, and Glyndon. It is by far the most sparsely populated area in Baltimore County. Strict zoning laws prohibit any planned communities from developing, with large single-family housing lots and agricultural activity predominating. Because of its higher elevation and microclimate, the weather of The Hereford Zone is slightly different from that of the rest of the county. It is not unusual in the winter for schools in the surrounding areas to be 2 hours late, while the Hereford Zone is closed due to inclement weather. Near the most northern part of the zone in the topmost strip where Baltimore County meets south central Pennsylvania, numerous mini tornadoes and wind storms zip through the fields unfettered by buildings or natural land changes to halt their progress. The air quality in the area is markedly different from that of the suburbs of Baltimore City to the south. Both the land elevation as it climbs from sea level to 966' at the Mason-Dixon Line near Stiltz, Pa.,on Middletown Rd and the absence of smokestack manufacturing combine with the prevailing westerly winds to eliminate the yellow haze associated with low levels of pollution on even the most humid summer days. Hereford High School, Parkton has the only agriscience program in the county along with Hereford Middle School. The school's mascot is the Bull, and the women's teams are called the "Lady Bulls". In the Hereford Zone, Prettyboy Reservoir covers an area of 206.5 sq/km behind the scenic Prettyboy Dam on the Gunpowder River. The Hereford High School varsity football team (The "Bulls") is well known throughout the state of Maryland. The Bulls have won 3 state titles in 1997, 2001, and 2002. Much of this success is attributed to coach Steve Turnbaugh, who turned around a formerly downtrodden Hereford football program. Hereford High is also the host of the annual "Bull Run" Cross Country Invitational, run in the end of September, which is one of the largest East Coast cross country running events, attracting over 100 schools from surrounding states. The "grueling" course is noted for its hills, twists, turns, and a steep ravine known as "The Dip", all making for what has been called "The Toughest Three Miles in Cross-Country" by John Dye of DyeStat.Hereford Theatre has won numerous statewide awards through CAPPIES, including Best Musical 2005 for their production of Pippin. They received the award at the Hippodrome Theatre in Baltimore, MD. The Hereford Ladies Faire and Chamber Choir are also known as one of the best award-winning choirs in the county, consistently receiving 1's in adjudications year after year.

Hereford High School is a four-year public high school located in the rural northern Baltimore County town of Parkton, Maryland, United States, as part of the Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS). The secondary school was established in 1953. The school's district is the Hereford Zone. The Hereford Zone covers 233 square miles (600 km2) and makes up over a third of Baltimore County by area. Like those of most public schools in the region, Hereford students are transported by a busing system. Hereford is notable for its agriscience program. It was the only one of its kind among the county's public high schools. Hereford's base feeder school, Hereford Middle School, also has a smaller agricultural program.

Half-Way House, also known as The Wiseburg Inn, is a historic inn and toll house located on York Road at Parkton, Baltimore County, Maryland. It is a large, 2+1⁄2-story Flemish bond brick structure. The main part, built as an inn about 1810, was placed in front of an earlier log structure which has since been used as a kitchen. The property includes three of the original outbuildings, a stone dairy, a stone laundry, and a board-and-batten shed / ice house. It was built to serve travelers on the newly opened turnpike from Baltimore to York.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. A boundary increase took place in 1989.

Glencoe is a historic home and resort complex located at Glencoe, Baltimore County, Maryland. It consists if a complex of Italianate-influenced domestic buildings and structures, clustered around a square, two-story frame dwelling. The house features a broad porch, which wraps around two sides with an iron-railed deck atop the porch. Four interior brick chimneys rise around a central observation deck. The property also includes a two-story, mansard roofed stable / carriage house, a smokehouse, ice house, sheep shed, garden house (probably a former chicken house), and a latticed frame gazebo. It was built in 1851-1856 as a private residence, but was subsequently developed as a summer resort.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

White Hall is an unincorporated community which straddles Baltimore and Harford counties, Maryland, United States. The town's post office is located on the NCR Trail and the Gunpowder River. Ivory Mills was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

Monkton is an unincorporated community in northern Baltimore County, Maryland, United States. It has a population of approximately 4,856 people. The community is 35 square miles (91 km2) in area, with approximately 138 inhabitants per square mile (53/km2). As an unincorporated area, Monkton has no legally defined boundaries, and its ZIP code (21111) includes a portion of adjacent Harford County. The community was named after Moncton, New Brunswick by Robert Cummings, a Pennsylvanian. Cummings initially named it Monckton Mills in honor of Rosanna Trites, a former love who was among the Pennsylvania Germans who had moved to Moncton in 1765. Cummings had also gone to Moncton, but returned in 1773 and settled at his uncle's estate in this community.East of Monkton is an area named "My Lady's Manor", known for its horse farms, sprawling countryside, and old, stately homes set back from the country roads. In 1713, Charles Calvert, 3rd Baron Baltimore, decreed 10,000 acres (40 km2) for himself. He made a gift of this land to his fourth wife, christening the estate "My Lady's Manor." It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Also listed on the National Register are the Corbett Historic District and St. James Church.

Corbett Historic District is a national historic district at Monkton, Baltimore County, Maryland, United States. It is a group of 20 dwellings, a doctor's office, a former store/post office, a brothel, and a school comprising the village of Corbett in rural northern Baltimore County, Maryland. Most of the buildings date from about 1880 through about 1920. They reflect the period of Corbett's development as a stop on the Northern Central Railway, and a local commercial, industrial, and transportation center for the surrounding farms.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

Parkton is an agrarian unincorporated area in the northern part of Baltimore County, Maryland, United States. It borders southern York County, Pennsylvania, which forms part of the Mason–Dixon line. The area is mostly agricultural in nature with corn, soy beans and other industrial use crops being the major plants grown. Approximately 6,600 people live within ZIP code 21120.

Parkton Hotel is a historic hotel located at Parkton, Baltimore County, Maryland, United States. It is a 3+1⁄2-story brick structure, five bays wide by three bays deep, constructed between 1850 and 1860. The hotel features a two-tiered, shed-roofed gallery which wraps around the south gable end. A two-story, two-bay, shed-roofed frame addition dating from 1884 extends to the rear of the brick block.The Parkton Hotel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Sparks is an unincorporated community that is located in Baltimore County, Maryland, United States. It is situated approximately 20 miles (32 km) north of Baltimore and is considered to be a suburb of the City of Baltimore. The Gunpowder River runs through Sparks. The popular North Central Railroad ("NCR") Hike-Bike Trail runs through Sparks along the basin of the Gunpowder Falls (a.k.a. the Gunpowder River). The town's ZIP Code is 21152 and it is frequently accessed at Exit 24, Belfast Road, along Interstate 83, a Highway that runs from Baltimore to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Although Sparks is unincorporated and has no official town limits, the area that is usually considered to constitute Sparks runs from several miles west of I-83 to Carroll Road to the east, and from north of Hunt Valley/Cockeysville along York Road and I-83 to Hereford. According to the 2010 US Census, 5,094 people live in the Sparks area. Glencoe is a smaller community that is largely surrounded by Sparks and the area is sometimes collectively known as "Sparks Glencoe, Maryland".
