Pitsligo Castle

Rosehearty (Scottish Gaelic: Ros Abhartaich) is a settlement on the Moray Firth coast, four miles west of the town Fraserburgh, in the historical county of Aberdeenshire in Scotland. The burgh has a population of approximately 1,300 with about 25 per cent of pensionable age.

Pittulie Castle is an oblong tower house probably dating from 1596, half a mile from Pitsligo Castle, Rosehearty, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is a scheduled monument. Built by the Frasers of Philorth, it was described by W. Douglas Simpson as one of the nine castles of the Knuckle, referring to the rocky headland of north-east Aberdeenshire.

Pitsligo was a coastal parish in the historic county of Aberdeenshire, Scotland, containing the fishing villages of Rosehearty, Pittulie and Sandhaven, 3 miles (6 km) west of Fraserburgh and 12 miles (19 km) north of Mintlaw. The name is derived from the Gaelic Peit Shligeach, meaning "portion of land abounding in shells". The parish was established on 28 June 1633, from parts of the existing parishes of Aberdour, Fraserburgh and Tyrie. Pitsligo Castle dates from the 15th century. Old Pitsligo Church, known locally as the Rathill or Peathill Kirk, dates to 1632. Its loft, described by Charles McKean as "magnificent", was added two years later. It was later moved and installed in the Hill Church of Rosehearty. The church was constructed after Pitsligo seceded from the parish of Aberdour. It is believed the split occurred after a minister "ranted in a sermon" about the "three Pits of Hell", namely Pittulie, Pittendrum and Pitsligo.

Sandhaven is a small fishing village in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, which lies between Rosehearty to the west and Fraserburgh to the east. It is joined to the even smaller village of Pitullie to the west.

Tyrie is a hamlet and parish in the Banff and Buchan district of Aberdeenshire, north-east Scotland. Tyrie is located on the A98 road, around 5.5 miles (8.9 km) south-west of Fraserburgh. Tyrie parish includes the larger settlement of New Pitsligo, 5 miles (8.0 km) to the south. There is a primary school in the village. Tyrie's St Andrew's Parish Church was built in 1800 and is a category B listed building. The church contains a Pictish symbol stone, known as the Raven Stone, which was discovered on the site of the old parish church. The ecclesiastical parish was united with Strichen parish in 2002. Boyndlie House, 1814, is a "recasting of the fine 17th-century House of Boyndlie, something not unlike Edinburgh's Prestonfield House".

Aberdour House is Category A listed country house in New Aberdour, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Dating to around 1740, it was built by John Forbes, of Knappernay. Historian Charles McKean describes House of Memsie as a "smaller and more decorative version of Aberdour House".

Memsie, Aberdeenshire, is a small community near Fraserburgh, Scotland. On Memsie Moor there is a very large stone cairn, Memsie Cairn, which has been opened, but nothing found inside. There were two other cairns, but they have been removed. Apart from the cairn, Memsie is near Mormond Hill, which was a very large listening post in the Cold War. These days the former listening post is used for satellite communications. The nearest Kirk to Memsie is in Rathen. The House of Memsie is located east of the A981 to the south of the community.

Dundarg Castle is a ruined castle about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) north-northeast of New Aberdour, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, built within the ramparts of an earlier Iron Age promontory fort. It was described by W. Douglas Simpson as one of the nine castles of the Knuckle, referring to the rocky headland of North-East Aberdeenshire, and by Charles McKean as "Scotland's answer to Tintagel". It became a small Celtic monastery for a period.

House of Memsie (also known as Mesmie House) is a Category A listed country house and estate in Memsie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It dates to around 1760, and it received its historic designation in 1971. It was formerly the home of the Fraser family for over three hundred years. It was sold to Lord Saltoun in the early 19th century. A Captain Dalrymple was another previous owner. Historian Charles McKean describes it as a "smaller and more decorative version of Aberdour House".

Memsie Cairn is an ancient cairn in Memsie, near Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Historic Scotland believe the burial cairn to be from the Bronze Age. It is an ancient historic monument managed by Historic Scotland.

Banff and Buchan College was until 1 November 2013 the name of the further education institution in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. In November 2013, Banff & Buchan College merged with Aberdeen College to form North East Scotland College. The new regional college will continue to serve an extensive geographical area with its main centres of delivery in Aberdeen and Fraserburgh.

In the 1884 rescue from SS William Hope in Aberdour Bay off the north coast of Aberdeenshire in Scotland Jane Whyte rescued fifteen sailors from their ship in conditions described as "blowing a hurricane". On 28 October 1884 SS William Hope was sailing from Fraserburgh to Burghead carrying only ballast. Caught off Troup Head by a shift in the wind in severe conditions the captain headed into Aberdour Bay where its steam engine failed and anchor chain broke. When the ship was drifting towards rocks on the shore Jane Whyte, a 40-year-old mother of nine and wife of a farm worker, was walking her dog along the beach. Whyte waded into the sea and caught a rope thrown towards her. Winding it round her waist, she pulled back to the shore and held it firmly while all fifteen sailors struggled to reach land one at a time. She then gave them shelter overnight until they were able to return to Dundee. Whyte was awarded the RNLI silver medal for outstanding bravery and a Board of Trade bronze medal of gallantry. With her £10 reward she was able to purchase her rented croft. The ship, an iron fishing trawler built in 1882, was wrecked and sold to be broken up.
