The Holy Redeemer Church lies on Boroughbridge Road, in the Acomb area of York, in England. The first church here was a simple brick building, completed in 1938. This is now used as the church hall, linked to the new church, behind. The new church was constructed between 1959 and 1965, to a design by George Pace.The church reuses parts of the demolished church of St Mary, Bishophill Senior. The south wall is constructed from stone from the building and includes Mediaeval windows, in a different arrangement to the original building. The remaining walls are brick, with the south wall including a 19th-century Gothic window. The clock tower is also of brick, and sits above a small chapel intended for weekday services.The church is entered through a late-12th century doorway. Inside, the church has a wide nave and two narrow aisles. The south arcade is from St Mary, partly dating from about 1200, and partly from the late 13th-century. Above the altar is an iron cross, incorporating an Anglo-Saxon carved stone. Other Saxon carved stones, mostly cross fragments, are incorporated in the pulpit and walls. The York Civic Trust claimed that these were "all the interesting parts" of St Mary.Nikolaus Pevsner described the building as "probably the best post-war building in the city". It was Grade II listed in 1998.

St Stephen's Church is the parish church of Acomb, a suburb of York in England. A church has lain on the site since the Saxon period, and some remains of the Saxon church were uncovered in 1830. By the time of the Norman Conquest, it was a possession of York Minster. In 1228, it was transferred to the Treasurer of the Minster, and a vicarage was built in 1313. It was transferred to the Crown in 1547. By 1830, the church was ruinous, so from 1831 to 1832 it was rebuilt, to a design by G. T. Andrews. It seated 338 worshippers, partly in two galleries. Cruciform in plan, it was constructed in Tadcaster limestone with a slate roof. The original chancel was retained, but it was rebuilt in 1851. A vestry was added in 1889, and the following year, an east window was added. In the 20th-century, a porch was added, as was a lean-to on the north wall. In 1848, it was described as "an elegant structure with a graceful spire, and, standing on the highest ground in the vicinity of York, [it] has a very picturesque appearance". The Royal Commission on Historic Monuments was more critical, describing it as "ostensibly in the Early English style, [but it] shows no real appreciation of mediaeval architecture".The roof was rebuilt in 1952, and in 1954, a peal of bells was installed, cast in 1770 for St Mary Bishophill Senior. In 1983, the building was Grade II listed. The church suffered a fire in 1992 and was restored afterwards, but was restored soon afterwards, and many of its fixtures and fittings survived. These include stained glass, the oldest of which was made by Edmund Gyles in 1662, depicted the arms of Charles II of England. The arms of William IV are displayed on a panel in the porch.

Knapton is a village in the civil parish of Rufforth with Knapton, in the City of York unitary authority area and ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England. It is 3 miles (5 km) west of York and is bounded by the village of Acomb to the east, the B1224 to the south, the A59 to the north and the A1237 York Outer Ring Road to the west.

Poppleton is a railway station on the Harrogate Line, which runs between Leeds and York via Harrogate. The station, situated 2 miles 72 chains (4.7 km) west of York, serves the villages of Nether Poppleton and Upper Poppleton, City of York in North Yorkshire, England. It is owned by Network Rail and managed by Northern Trains. The line is double track between Poppleton and Skelton Junction in York. West of Poppleton, the line is single track as far as Hammerton.The station has a nursery (horticultural), which used to supply plants across the stations in Yorkshire pre-privatisation. A two-foot gauge railway still operates around the nursery. In 2022-2023, the destination with the most journeys was York, with 36,554 journeys (50.7% of journeys).

Acomb House is a historic building in the Acomb suburb of York, in England. The building lies on the north side of Front Street, in Acomb. Its site is believed to have been previously occupied by an earlier house, belonging to the Blanshard family, and described in 1733 as ancient. The current house was constructed in the first half of the 18th century, to a symmetrical plan, other than a small scullery block on the north side. It was altered in the late 18th century, which is probably when its porch and its attic storey was added. Further alterations took place in the early 19th century, including external parts of the ground floor, and a new porch and staircase on the north side.The house was Grade II* listed in 1954, and the small wall in front, topped with cast iron railings, is also listed.The house is built of brick, with some stone dressings. It is three storeys high, and five bays wide. Inside, the ground floor has much 18th century plasterwork. The front east room also has a late-18th century fireplace and early 19th-century built-in cupboard. The front west room is panelled from floor to ceiling, while the dining room has another late-18th century iron firelace, with a marble surround. The main staircase is original, while the servants' staircase has been rebuilt at the first floor level. The four main first floor rooms also retain early plasterwork, with the saloon having the most detailed decoration.

Acomb , is a village and suburb within the City of York unitary authority area, to the western side of York, England. It covers the site of the original village of the same name, which is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. It is bordered by the suburbs of Holgate, to the east, Clifton, to the north and Woodthorpe to the south. The boundary to the west abuts the fields close to the A1237, York Outer Ring Road. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Acomb was incorporated into the City of York in 1934.Formerly a farming village, Acomb expanded over the centuries to become a dormitory area for workers in heavy industry, such as rail engineering, in the 19th and 20th centuries and more recently for a more diverse workforce. Though it no longer has any large-scale manufacturing, it does have a diverse retail centre. There are at least 19 Grade II listed buildings within its boundaries. It was made a Conservation Area in 1975, with the historic area along Front Street and the Green retaining its village character. It is also an Area of Archaeological Importance under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979. Acomb comprises two wards of the City of York: Acomb and Westfield. At the 2011 Census of England and Wales, it had a population of 22,215, the largest of all areas of the city. There are six primary schools and one comprehensive school. There are also a variety of sporting clubs and one public sports centre. Acomb is famous in York for having a very high concentration of street bollards. These were installed in an upgrade in 2023 and have since prompted great controversy among local residents due to their vast numbers and variance from the original proposed plans for the area.

Gateway Church is a Christian church based in The Gateway Centre, Acomb, York, England. Formerly known as Acomb Christian Fellowship, it is part of the ChristCentral Churches family of churches, a part of the Newfrontiers movement of churches.It has weekly worship services every Sunday morning at 10.30am at the Gateway Centre and encourages members to join a Lifegroup (small group) for community and fellowship. It adheres to the Evangelical Alliance Statement of Faith and operates under the legal structure of Gateway (York) CIO - a Charitable Incorporated Organisation.The church was instrumental in the setting up of York Foodbank and runs a Christians Against Poverty free debt help service.

The Nether Poppleton Tithe Barn is a tithe barn at Manor Farm in the village of Nether Poppleton in the unitary authority of City of York in the North of England. Research by dendrochronologists has shown that the tithe barn, which was built on the site of an old nunnery, is at least 450 years old. The building is often referred to as "Rupert's Barn" because Prince Rupert of the Rhine is said to have stationed part of his army in the barn before the Battle of Marston Moor in 1644 during the English Civil War. There is also an historical connection with the Restoration of King Charles II because in 1660, Lord Fairfax and two hundred Yorkshire gentlemen gathered at the barn before marching into York for the proclamation of the restored King. The area surrounding the barn forms part of a scheduled monument and after nearby St Everilda's Church, the tithe barn is the oldest, largest and most important building in both Poppletons. The Friends of the Poppleton Tithe Barn (registered charity number 1060767) was founded in 1997 to preserve and maintain the Tithe Barn for the benefit of the local community and future generations. It was restored in 1999 and completed in the year 2000. The Duke of York visited the Barn in 1999 whilst it was being restored.Designed and Built by Hutton Peach, the new Poppleton Tithe Barn website was launched in August 2016.

St Everilda's Church lies in Nether Poppleton, a village immediately north-west of York, in England. The church is one of only two in the country dedicated to Everilda, an Anglo-Saxon saint who established a monastic community which may have been in Poppleton, although it is usually placed in Everingham. A church was in existence by 1088, at which time its advowson was granted to the newly founded St Mary's Abbey, York.The church was rebuilt in the twelfth-century, and much of the material from that period survives. It is built of limestone, some finely cut and other sections of rubble. In 1778, galleries were added on the north and west side of the nave, and part of the north wall was rebuilt in brick. Further alterations took place in the 19th-century, and the west door probably dates from this period.Some of the windows in the chancel contain 14th-century stained glass, while those in the nave are square-headed and of later date. In the chancel, there are three 17th-century memorials to members of the Hutton family. In the east wall of the vestry is a carving of a cross, believed to date from the 13th-century. In 1939, a new altar, carved by Robert Thompson, was installed. An extension was added in 2015, providing a kitchen and storage space. The building has been grade II* listed since 1966.

Nether Poppleton is a village and civil parish in the unitary authority of the City of York in North Yorkshire, England. It is by the west bank of the River Ouse and is adjacent to Upper Poppleton west of York. It is close to the A59 road from York to Harrogate. The village is served by Poppleton railway station on the Harrogate Line. According to the 2001 census, the parish had a population of 2,077. That increased to 2,141 at the 2011 census. Before 1996, it had been part of the Borough of Harrogate. The name is derived from popel (pebble) and tun (hamlet, farm) and means "pebble farm" because of the gravel bed upon which the village was built. The neighbouring village of Upper Poppleton has been referred to as "Land Poppleton" and Nether Poppleton as "Water Poppleton", indicating the villages' position relative to the river. The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 and an Anglo-Saxon charter of circa 972. It became a Conservation Area in 1993. The earthworks to the north and east of the parish church are designated as a Scheduled Monument (53°59′23.12″N 1°8′25.95″W).

The York Cold War Bunker is a two-storey, semi-subterranean, Cold War bunker in the Holgate area of York, England, built in 1961 to monitor nuclear explosions and fallout in Yorkshire, in the event of nuclear war. One of about 30 around the United Kingdom, the building was used throughout its operational existence as the regional headquarters and control centre for the Royal Observer Corps's No. 20 Group YORK between 1961 and 1991. It has become an English Heritage Scheduled Monument and was opened in 2006 by English Heritage as a tourist attraction. During its Cold War operational period, the building could have supported 60 local volunteer members of the Royal Observer Corps, inclusive of a ten-man United Kingdom Warning and Monitoring Organisation scientific warning team. They would have collated details of nuclear bombs exploded within the UK and tracked radioactive fallout across the Yorkshire region, warning the public of its approach. This example of an ROC control building is the only one that is preserved in its operational condition. The others stand derelict or have either been demolished or sold. A few have been converted to other uses, like No. 16 Group Shrewsbury that is now a veterinary clinic, another is a recording studio, two are satellite and communications control centres, and one is a solicitor's file storage facility. The fully restored building contains air filtration and generating plant, kitchen and canteen, dormitories, radio and landline communication equipment and specialist 1980s computers and a fully equipped operations room with vertical illuminated perspex maps.
