Ravenna Bridge

St. Oswald’s Chapel (German: St. Oswald-Kapelle) lies in the Höllental in the High Black Forest, at its eastern end near the Ravenna Bridge. Administratively it lies in the civil parish of Steig in the municipality of Breitnau in the county of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. Ecclesiastically it belongs to the parish of Hinterzarten. The chapel is dedicated to Oswald of Northumbria, a 7th-century Anglo-Saxon king. He is depicted in several places on the main altar of the chapel..

The Ravenna Gorge (German: Ravennaschlucht) is a gorge in the Black Forest in southwest Germany. It is a narrow side valley of the Höllental, through which the Ravenna stream flows. A trail also runs through the ravine as part of the Black Forest Homeland Path (Heimatpfad Hochschwarzwald). The roughly four-kilometre-long gorge runs from the Höllental up to the village of Breitnau on the plateau and lies within its municipal boundaries. The name of the gorge is probably derived from the French word ravine which means "gorge".The wild mountain brook of the Ravenna tumbles over several waterfalls in the gorge. The two biggest falls are the Great Ravenna Fall (Großer Ravennafall) which is 16 metres high and the Little Ravenna Fall (Kleiner Ravennafall) which descends through a height of 6 metres. In former times, there were several water mills along the stream. Some are still visible today within the gorge and one or two are well preserved. At the upper end of the gorge is the mill of Großjockenmühle which dates to 1883 and is a protected monument. A feature of this mill is that, due to the steep descent of the Ravenna, the water is led over the roof of the mill onto the water wheel. The lower part of the gorge is spanned by the 37-metre-high Ravenna Bridge, the viaduct of the Höllental Railway. Also here is Saint Oswald’s Chapel (built 1148) and the Hotel Hofgut Sternen, in which Marie Antoinette stayed in 1770 and Goethe in 1779. In front of the Ravenna Bridge is the Galgenbühl, a knoll about 30 metres high. There used to be a gallows (Galgen) here, where executions were carried out. Later a pavilion was built here which fell into ruins over the course of time. The slopes were originally used as pasture, but in the 1950s the mountain was afforested with spruce and Douglas fir. In 2010 all the trees were felled, however, and a new pavilion erected on the Galgenbühl. It is covered with shingles made of thuja wood.

Birklehof School (German: Schule Birklehof) is a progressive educational boarding school and grammar school with a holistic approach located in Hinterzarten in the High Black Forest in Germany, approximately 25 km from Freiburg. It is a private coeducational secondary school (German: Gymnasium). Currently, the school has approximately 230 students, 170 of whom are boarders who live on campus. The school was established by educator Kurt Hahn in 1932 and from the beginning accepted girls and boys. Under the Nazi regime, Hahn was forced to emigrate to Scotland where he founded Gordonstoun School as well as later Outward Bound, Round Square and the United World Colleges.

Breitnau is a municipality in the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald in Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany, about 30 kilometres from the city of Freiburg im Breisgau. It is located within the High Black Forest.

The Roßberg is a mountain, 1,124.7 m above sea level (NHN), in the Black Forest immediately north of Breitnau in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. Hinterzarten, Titisee-Neustadt and St. Märgen are also nearby. On the same ridge just over 1 km to the west is the Hohwart (1123 m) and 2 km to the east, across the Oberbach valley, is the highest mountain in Breitnau municipality: the Weißtannenhöhe (1190 m). On the northwestern side of the mountain the remains of a rampart and ditch system from the end of the 17th century may be made out. In the area of the Roßberg the fortifications (known as Schanzen) run from the Schanzenhäusle via the Ringelschanze to the zur Roßbergschanze. Between the Ringelschanze and the Roßbergschanze there are continuous, linear structures with several triangular bastions. In 1690 battles were fought at Breitnau, but by the early 18th century the fortifications had lost their military significance.Immediately next to the Roßbergschanze lies the Breitnau Friends of Nature house (Naturfreundehaus Breitnau, Roßberg 47.951884°N 8.076394°E / 47.951884; 8.076394).

The Hohwart (occasionally also Hohwarthöhe or Hohwart-Höhe) is a mountain near the village of Breitnau in the Black Forest in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. It is 1,123 metres high.

Hinterzarten is a resort village in the Black Forest (German: Schwarzwald), located in the southwest of the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Although Hinterzarten is mostly famous for its ski jumping, it has many other tourist attractions.

The Rotbach (in its upper reaches it is called the Zartenbach and Löffeltalbach, in its middle section, the Höllenbach) is the 19.9-kilometre-long, left-hand and southeasterly headstream of the Dreisam in the Southern Black Forest in the south German state of Baden-Württemberg.

The Mathisleweiher is a large bog lake, under 2 hectares in area, in the Black Forest in southern Germany. It lies in the High Black Forest between Feldberg in the west and the Titisee in the east on the territory of Hinterzarten at about 999 m above NN southwest of the village in the Eschengrundmoos Nature Reserve. The pond impounds the Zartenbach which flows through it from west-southwest to east-northeast. The stream rises on the eastern slopes of the Ramselehöhe (1,112 m above NN) at about 1,055 m above NN, picks up the Eschengrundmoosbach from the right from the protected bog and runs for less than a kilometre before entering the lake. A shorter stream runs from the north from the woods of the Stuckwald. It has a catchment of 1.0 km2The lake is accessible from Hinterzarten but only on foot. A path runs from the village passing close to the lake and a spur branches off to the east shore. Together with the Mathislehof, Mathislemühle and Mathislewald the pond belongs to the Müller-Fahnenberg Foundation of the University of Freiburg.

The Adler Ski Stadium (German: Adler-Skistadion) is a ski jumping complex in Hinterzarten, Germany.

The Höllental (English translation: Hell's Valley) in the Black Forest is a deep valley - in places like a gorge - in the state of Baden-Württemberg in Germany. The valley, which is about 9 km long, is located in the southern part of the Southern Black Forest Nature Park about 18 km southeast of Freiburg im Breisgau between Hinterzarten and Buchenbach-Himmelreich. The Rotbach stream (also called Höllenbach in the upper Höllental) runs through the valley. "Hölle" is the German word for "hell". In the narrow, dark valley, travellers almost felt like moving underground. The valley was the locale of the Battle of Emmendingen in 1796, part of the French Revolutionary Wars.

The Weißtannenhöhe is a mountain, 1,190 or 1,192 metres high, in the Black Forest in Germany and the highest point in the municipality of Breitnau.
