It encompasses 50 contributing buildings and 3 contributing sites in the rural village of Newport. The district includes primarily freestanding single-family dwellings or store buildings of one or two stories, featuring wood-frame construction, wood siding or ornamental metal sheathing, front porches, and associated outbuildings. Notable buildings include the Epling-Dunkley[or Dunklee]-Smith House (1820s-1830s), Keister-Miller House (1846), Robert Payne House (1850s), Payne-Price House, the Miller Building (c. 1902), the Pent Taylor Store (c. 1902), the Miller Brothers General Mercantile Store (c. 1902), F.E. Dunkley [Dunklee] Store (c. 1902–1903), Pasterfield House (1903), Dr. Walter Miller House (1903-1904), Albert Price House (1904), Methodist Parsonage (1909), Newport Methodist Church (1850s, 1906), and Sinking Creek Valley Bank (1927).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. It is included in the Greater Newport Rural Historic District.

It encompasses a total of 737 contributing buildings and 25 contributing structures in the rural area near the village of Newport. It encompasses the previously listed Newport Historic District. The district includes primarily 19th- and early-20th-century farmsteads and complexes. Notable buildings include the "Camper" Cabin (late 18th century), Albert Meredith Cabin (c. 1840), E. L. Lucas House (c. 1850), Moses Atkins House (1837), William Lafon House (1855), Doak Lucas House (1860), Leonard Kessinger House (1871), Martin Farrier House (1905), Steve and Lori Taylor House (1938), Upper Spruce Run School (1890), Clover Hollow Christian Church (1921), Sherry Memorial Church, Old Cook Mill (c. 1910), three standing diminutive Burr covered bridges, a smelting furnace (1871), the Mountain Lake Hotel Resort, and the Biological Station of the University of Virginia (1934).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

Clover Hollow Natural Area Preserve is a Natural Area Preserve located in Giles County, Virginia. The 25-acre (10 ha) preserve protects Stay High Cave, which houses seven rare cave-dwelling invertebrate species, three of which are only known from the county's Sinking Creek Valley. More common species, such as salamanders, crickets, harvestmen, spiders, crayfish, and bats, also live within the cave's streams, riparian mud banks, and drip pools. Most water in the cave stream comes from forested slopes.The significance of the preserve was discovered in 1994, when speleologist Dave Hubbard inventoried the cave in response to local concerns. After both the Virginia Natural Heritage Program and the Cave Conservancy of the Virginias identified the cave as a conservation priority, the state took control of the site in 2005.The preserve is owned and maintained by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. Access is strictly limited to activities related to data collection and monitoring.

Walnut Spring is a historic home located near Kanodes Mill, Montgomery County, Virginia. The house is a large, two-story, gable-roofed, dwelling with a single pile central passage plan. It was built in the period 1830–1865. It has a long appendage to the rear made up of connected outbuildings. It features gable ends finished with tapered rake boards with decorative sawn ends and a box cornice detailed with a simple flat, stepped, or corbeled form.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Michael Kinzer House is a historic home located at Blacksburg, Montgomery County, Virginia. It was built about 1845, and is a two-story, four-bay brick two-room-plan house. It features a decorative brick cornice. Also on the property is the contributing site of a brick kiln.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Joseph McDonald Farm is a historic home and farm complex located near Prices Fork, Montgomery County, Virginia. The main house is a two-story, three-bay, modified hall and parlor plan, log dwelling. The original section dates to about 1800. A two-story rear ell was added in the mid-19th century, and an addition to the ell was added in 1908. Also on the property are the contributing log spring house, one-story log house, and a board-and-batten outbuilding.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

Mountain Lake is a freshwater lake located in Giles County near Newport, Virginia in the United States. Along with Lake Drummond in the Great Dismal Swamp, it is one of only two natural lakes in Virginia. It was originally known as Salt Pond, as it was where cattle were given salt.The area is within the Mountain Lake Wilderness Cluster.

The Mountain Lake Wilderness Cluster is a region recognized by The Wilderness Society for its unique waterfalls, vistas, trout stream and wildlife habitat. The heart of the region is the Mountain Lake Wilderness, the largest wilderness in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. These public lands are enhanced by the presence of private lands which are preserved to maintain their natural integrity. The region includes the Mountain Lake Biological Station that studies distinctive wildlife and ecology of the area.

Evans House No. 2 is a historic home located near Prices Fork, Montgomery County, Virginia, United States. It was built about 1860, and is a two-story, five-bay, brick dwelling with a center-passage plan. It has a gable roof, exterior brick end chimneys with stepped shoulders, a hipped roof front porch, and a second front entrance. Also on the property is a contributing one-story frame mid-19th century outbuilding.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Linkous Store is a settlement near the town of Blacksburg in Montgomery County, Virginia, United States. It lies on the western edge of Blacksburg at the intersection of Prices Fork Road (SR 685) and Merrimac Road (SR 657) about 1.5 miles (2 km) from Prices Fork. The community is a part of the Blacksburg–Christiansburg Metropolitan Statistical Area which encompasses all of Montgomery County and the cities of Blacksburg, Christiansburg, and Radford for statistical purposes. The settlement is named for a store (not extant) originally constructed in the mid 19th century and owned by the Linkous family. The town had a one-room school, Matamoras No. 9, located behind the site of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. A marker at the site of the church reads in part "Site of St. Peter's Evangelical Church, 1750-1885. St. Peter's was the first Church west of the Alleghanies and the third Lutheran Church in Virginia."

Prices Fork is a small traditionally agricultural census-designated place (CDP), in Montgomery County, Virginia, United States. The population as of the 2010 Census was 1,066. It is located about three miles west of Blacksburg and the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). The community is a part of the Blacksburg–Christiansburg metropolitan area which encompasses all of Montgomery County and the cities of Blacksburg, Christiansburg, and Radford for statistical purposes. Prices Fork was named in honor of the local Price, or Preisch, family.Prices Fork has one church (Prices Fork United Methodist Church), a Grange Hall and an elementary school (grades pre-K through 5th grade). Several structures in the community are designated as historical structures. The Prices Fork Historic District, Evans House No. 2, Joseph McDonald Farm, and Adam Wall House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.The old Prices Fork Elementary School has been renovated and now includes mixed-income apartments, a restaurant, a brewery and a shared-use kitchen.
