Newport is an unincorporated community in Giles County, Virginia, United States, with the ZIP code of 24128. The 2020 Census reports a population of 1,767 in the community. It is located in a valley between Salt Pond Mountain, Sherman's Nose and Gap Mountain.

It encompasses 50 contributing buildings and 3 contributing sites in the rural village of Newport. The district includes primarily freestanding single-family dwellings or store buildings of one or two stories, featuring wood-frame construction, wood siding or ornamental metal sheathing, front porches, and associated outbuildings. Notable buildings include the Epling-Dunkley[or Dunklee]-Smith House (1820s-1830s), Keister-Miller House (1846), Robert Payne House (1850s), Payne-Price House, the Miller Building (c. 1902), the Pent Taylor Store (c. 1902), the Miller Brothers General Mercantile Store (c. 1902), F.E. Dunkley [Dunklee] Store (c. 1902–1903), Pasterfield House (1903), Dr. Walter Miller House (1903-1904), Albert Price House (1904), Methodist Parsonage (1909), Newport Methodist Church (1850s, 1906), and Sinking Creek Valley Bank (1927).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. It is included in the Greater Newport Rural Historic District.

Huffman House, also known as Creekside Farm and Huffman Farm, is a historic home and farm located east of Newport in Craig County, Virginia. The farmhouse was built about 1835, with an addition and remodeling between 1907 and 1911. It is a two-story, single-pile center-hall plan, frame dwelling with a side gable roof. Also on the property are a contributing early-19th century barn, a corn crib, a wash house, a garage, and an early-20th century country store. The property is an example of a small town center located along the Cumberland Gap Turnpike; a major transportation route of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The country store also held the local post office for a few years, provided sleeping quarters to travelers along the turnpike, and has served as a local Baptismal hole. The farmhouse also doubled as a lodge to weary travelers.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

It encompasses a total of 737 contributing buildings and 25 contributing structures in the rural area near the village of Newport. It encompasses the previously listed Newport Historic District. The district includes primarily 19th- and early-20th-century farmsteads and complexes. Notable buildings include the "Camper" Cabin (late 18th century), Albert Meredith Cabin (c. 1840), E. L. Lucas House (c. 1850), Moses Atkins House (1837), William Lafon House (1855), Doak Lucas House (1860), Leonard Kessinger House (1871), Martin Farrier House (1905), Steve and Lori Taylor House (1938), Upper Spruce Run School (1890), Clover Hollow Christian Church (1921), Sherry Memorial Church, Old Cook Mill (c. 1910), three standing diminutive Burr covered bridges, a smelting furnace (1871), the Mountain Lake Hotel Resort, and the Biological Station of the University of Virginia (1934).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

The heart of the region is the Mountain Lake Wilderness, the largest wilderness in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. These public lands are enhanced by the presence of private lands which are preserved to maintain their natural integrity. The region includes the Mountain Lake Biological Station that studies distinctive wildlife and ecology of the area.

The wilderness area is located next to privately owned Mountain Lake, and consists of 8,314 acres (3,365 ha) in Virginia and 2,721 acres (1,101 ha) in West Virginia.Thanks to frequent rains and a high elevation, the wilderness provides habitat not found in other areas of the southern Appalachians, habitats such as mountain bogs, vernal ponds and red spruce wetlands.The area is part of the Mountain Lake Wilderness Cluster.

The Slusser-Ryan Farm is a historic farm at 2028 Mount Tabor Road in rural Montgomery County, Virginia, about 4 miles (6.4 km) northeast of Blacksburg. The main farm complex includes a house whose core elements are log structures built beginning in 1855, and later enlarged with frame structures. It has a variety of well-preserved exterior and interior 19th-century finishes that are stylistically eclectic. Outbuildings include a 19th-century pumphouse and privy, and there is a small 19th-century coal mine on the property. The latter was probably used by the farm's owners for local use.The farm was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.

Keister House is a historic home located at Blacksburg, Montgomery County, Virginia. It was built in the 1830s, and is a two-story, four-bay brick two-room-plan house. It has exterior end chimneys and a hipped roof front porch. The property was owned by the Keister Family from 1800 until a 1935 foreclosure.A family room was added to the rear of the house in 1971.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

The Odd Fellows Hall, also known as Tadmore Light Lodge, No. 6184, is a historic Grand United Order of Odd Fellows meeting hall located at Blacksburg, Montgomery County, Virginia. It was built in 1905, and is a two-story frame structure clad in painted weatherboard siding. It has a standing seam metal gable roof. The building served throughout the early- to mid-20th century as the social center of the local African-American community.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
