Canton of Vianden

The Vianden Pumped Storage Plant is located just north of Vianden in Diekirch District, Luxembourg. The power plant uses the pumped-storage hydroelectric method to generate electricity and serves as a peaking power plant. Its lower reservoir is located on the Our River, bordering Germany, and the upper is elevated above on the nearby Saint Nicholas Mountain. Construction on the plant began in 1959 and the first pump-generators were commissioned in 1962. A tenth pump-generator was installed in 1976 bringing the plant's installed generating capacity to 1,096 megawatts (1,470,000 hp). The plant generates an average of 1,650 gigawatt-hours (5,900 TJ) annually but of course consumes even more. Generally the efficiency of this energy storage method is around 70–80%. The plant is owned by Société électrique de l'Our and RWE. Construction on an eleventh pump-generator began in 2010 and it is expected to be commissioned in 2013, which will bring the plant's installed capacity to 1,296 megawatts (1,738,000 hp).

Bastendorf (Luxembourgish: Baastenduerf) is a small town in the commune of Tandel, in north-eastern Luxembourg. As of 2005, the town has a population of 371. Bastendorf was a commune in the canton of Diekirch until 1 January 2006, when it was merged with the commune of Fouhren to form the new commune of Tandel, in Vianden. The law creating Tandel was passed on 21 December 2004.

Stolzembourg (Luxembourgish: Stolzebuerg, German: Stolzemburg) is a village in the commune of Putscheid, in north-eastern Luxembourg. As of 2005, the village has a population of 170. Stolzembourg Castle is located on a hill in the centre of the village. The current building was built on the ruins of the medieval castle in 1898 in the style of a Scottish country house.The village is also known for the fact that in World War II US troops crossed the border at Stolzembourg into Nazi Germany for the first time. On 11 September 1944 a patrol led by Sgt. Warner W. Holzinger of the 2nd Platoon, Troop B, 85th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, 5th Armored Division, crossed the river Our and reached Keppeshausen.

The current building was built on the ruins of the medieval castle in 1898 in the style of a Scottish country house.

Vianden Castle (Luxembourgish: Veianer Schlass [ˈfɑɪɑnɐ ˈʃlɑs] or (locally) Veiner Schlooss [ˈfɑɪnɐ ˈʃloːs] ; French: Château de Vianden; German: Schloss Vianden), located in Vianden in the north of Luxembourg, is one of the largest fortified castles west of the Rhine. With origins dating from the fourth century as a Roman outpost and the 10th century, the more familiar castle form was built in the Romanesque style from the 11th to 14th centuries. Gothic transformations and trimmings were added at the end of this period. A Renaissance mansion was added in the 17th century but thereafter the castle was allowed to fall into ruins. It has, however, recently been fully restored and is open to visitors. Vianden Castle is widely regarded as the best castle to visit in Luxembourg.

Bivels (Luxembourgish: Biwels) is a small village in the commune of Putscheid in north-eastern Luxembourg. It is part of the canton of Vianden in the district of Diekirch. As of 2001, it had 74 inhabitants.The village is located about 3 km north of Vianden along a 7 km long artificial lake. Once a poor farming village, it now benefits from the nearby hydroelectric power plant. In the 1960s, when the dam was built, the lower part of the village was flooded. New housing and a church had to be rebuilt on higher ground overlooking the lake and the wooded hills beyond. The area is popular with tourists, especially hikers.

Brandenbourg Castle (Luxembourgish: Buerg Branebuerg; French: Château de Brandenbourg; German: Burg Brandenbourg), now a ruin, is located on a promontory some 70 metres above the village of Brandenbourg in north-eastern Luxembourg. It has a history going back to the 9th and 10th centuries when there was a wooden fort on the site. The 13th century keep, now 11.9 metres high, used to have four floors, only three of which remain. Around 1687, the French destroyed the external walls of the castle which subsequently fell increasingly into ruin. It is now owned by the family du Fays - van Delft. The owner signed an emphyteutic lease (1997) with the State of Luxembourg permitting the state to take care of the castle (consolidation and archaeological excavation work).

Fouhren (Luxembourgish: Furen [ˈfuːə̯ʀən]; German: Fuhren) is a small town in the commune of Tandel, in north-eastern Luxembourg. As of 2005, the town has a population of 353. Fouhren was a commune in the canton of Vianden until 1 January 2006, when it was merged with the commune of Bastendorf to form the new commune of Tandel. The law creating Tandel was passed on 21 December 2004.

Brandenbourg (Luxembourgish: Branebuerg, German: Brandenburg) is a village in the commune of Tandel, in north-eastern Luxembourg. It lies in the valley of the Blees river, and is the site of the 10th century Brandenbourg Castle. As of 2001, the village had a population of 189. Until 1 January 2006, Brandenbourg was part of the commune of Bastendorf, which was merged with the commune of Fouhren to form the modern commune of Tandel.

Landscheid (Luxembourgish: Laaschent) is a village in northeastern Luxembourg.It is situated in the commune of Tandel and has a population of 109.

Tandel is a commune and village in eastern Luxembourg, in the canton of Vianden. It lies close to the border with Germany. As of 2001, the village of Tandel, which lies in the centre of the commune, has a population of 87. The commune of Tandel was formed on 1 January 2006 from the former communes of Bastendorf (in the canton of Diekirch) and Fouhren (in the canton of Vianden). The law creating Tandel was passed on 21 December 2004.
