Stolzembourg Castle

Stolzembourg (Luxembourgish: Stolzebuerg, German: Stolzemburg) is a village in the commune of Putscheid, in north-eastern Luxembourg. As of 2005, the village has a population of 170. Stolzembourg Castle is located on a hill in the centre of the village. The current building was built on the ruins of the medieval castle in 1898 in the style of a Scottish country house.The village is also known for the fact that in World War II US troops crossed the border at Stolzembourg into Nazi Germany for the first time. On 11 September 1944 a patrol led by Sgt. Warner W. Holzinger of the 2nd Platoon, Troop B, 85th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, 5th Armored Division, crossed the river Our and reached Keppeshausen.

Keppeshausen is a municipality in the district of Bitburg-Prüm, in Rhineland-Palatinate, western Germany.

The Vianden Pumped Storage Plant is located just north of Vianden in Diekirch District, Luxembourg. The power plant uses the pumped-storage hydroelectric method to generate electricity and serves as a peaking power plant. Its lower reservoir is located on the Our River, bordering Germany, and the upper is elevated above on the nearby Saint Nicholas Mountain. Construction on the plant began in 1959 and the first pump-generators were commissioned in 1962. A tenth pump-generator was installed in 1976 bringing the plant's installed generating capacity to 1,096 megawatts (1,470,000 hp). The plant generates an average of 1,650 gigawatt-hours (5,900 TJ) annually but of course consumes even more. Generally the efficiency of this energy storage method is around 70–80%. The plant is owned by Société électrique de l'Our and RWE. Construction on an eleventh pump-generator began in 2010 and it is expected to be commissioned in 2013, which will bring the plant's installed capacity to 1,296 megawatts (1,738,000 hp).

The German-Luxembourg Nature Park (German: Deutsch-Luxemburgische Naturpark) is a cross-border nature park, which was established on 17 April 1964 by state treaty between the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It thus became the first cross-border nature park in Western Europe. On the German side Naturpark Südeifel is providing services for visitors.The park covers an area of 789 km² along the northern German-Luxembourg border, of which 432 km² are on the Rhine side and 357 km² on the Grand Duchy side. In Germany, the area of the park is identical with the South Eifel Landscape Park (German: Naturpark Südeifel) established in 1958, while the greater part of the Luxembourg side coincides with the Our Landscape Park (German: Naturpark Our, French: Parc naturel de l'Our). The park covers the Our river valley separating the two countries and the low mountains of the Ardennes from the Eifel, in its southern part there is a region known as Little Luxembourg Switzerland (Luxembourgish: Kleng Lëtzebuerger Schwäiz, German: Luxemburger Schweiz, French: Petite Suisse luxembourgeoise). The attractions of the park include numerous monuments (e.g. Vianden Castle, former monastery in Echternach), villages and towns, river valleys with numerous waterfalls, mills and geological formations, forests, cultural heritage (the dancing procession in Echternach is inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Heritage List). Within the park, 25 nature reserves and numerous other forms of nature protection have been established.

Bivels (Luxembourgish: Biwels) is a small village in the commune of Putscheid in north-eastern Luxembourg. It is part of the canton of Vianden in the district of Diekirch. As of 2001, it had 74 inhabitants.The village is located about 3 km north of Vianden along a 7 km long artificial lake. Once a poor farming village, it now benefits from the nearby hydroelectric power plant. In the 1960s, when the dam was built, the lower part of the village was flooded. New housing and a church had to be rebuilt on higher ground overlooking the lake and the wooded hills beyond. The area is popular with tourists, especially hikers.
