Finca Vigía

Diezmero is a ward in the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, located by Carretera Central. It is under the administration of San Miguel del Padrón, a city municipality of Havana. Its demography spreads within about 2 square kilometers.

The Iglesia Parroquial de Santa María del Rosario is a church located some 20 km southeast of downtown Havana, Cuba, in the municipality of Cotorro. It was built between 1760 and 1766 and is known by the title given by the Obispo Espada: “The Cathedral of the fields of Cuba”. It has been declared in two occasions (1946 and 1984) a National Monument. It has a baroque altar of amazing beauty, only comparable with the altar of the Church of Remedios. The gigantic altar still contains its Solomonic column covered in gold. The first Cuban scientist graduated in medicine, the Dr. Tomás Romay and Chacón, was baptised in the Iglesia Parroquial de Santa María del Rosario in 1764. The Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier married in this church by the decade of 1940. José María Chacón and Calvo, famous hispanist and sixth earl of House Bayona was baptised in this church. The church was visited by Queen Sofia of Spain in 1999.

In 1952, Ernest Hemingway featured Hatuey beer in his book The Old Man and the Sea. When he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, the company threw him a party at the Modelo Brewery. Hemingway was a frequent patron of the brewery since it was located near to his home in Havana at Finca Vigía.

The Captaincy General of Cuba (Spanish: Capitanía General de Cuba) was an administrative district of the Spanish Empire created in 1607 as part of Habsburg Spain's attempt to better defend and administer its Caribbean possessions. The reform also established captaincies general in Puerto Rico, Guatemala and Yucatán. The restructuring of the Captaincy General in 1764 was the first example of the Bourbon Reforms in America. The changes included adding the provinces of Florida and Louisiana and granting more autonomy to these provinces. This later change was carried out by the Count of Floridablanca under Charles III to strengthen the Spanish position vis-a-vis the British in the Caribbean. A new governor-captain general based in Havana oversaw the administration of the new district. The local governors of the larger Captaincy General had previously been overseen in political and military matters by the president of the Audiencia of Santo Domingo. This audiencia retained oversight of judicial affairs until the establishment of new audiencias in Puerto Príncipe (1800) and Havana (1838). In 1825, as a result of the loss of the mainland possessions, the Spanish government granted the governors-captain generals of Cuba extraordinary powers in matters of administration, justice and the treasury and in the second half of the 19th century gave them the title of Governor General.

The University of Pedagogical Sciences "Hector Alfredo Pineda Zaldivar" (UCPETP) (Spanish: Universidad de Ciencias Pedagógicas Héctor Alfredo Pineda Zaldívar), originally named "Héctor Alfredo Pineda Zaldívar Higher Pedagogical Institute" (Spanish: Instituto Superior Pedagogico para la Ensenanza Tecnica y Profesional, ISPETP) is a Higher Education, post-graduate and doctoral research university located in Boyeros, Havana, Cuba. It has the mission to prepare professors capable of developing high level professionals in different areas of engineering. It works to become the national leader of scientific and technical-pedagogical excellence for the improvement of the Technical and Professional Education and for its leading role of the technical careers in the rest of the pedagogical institutions.
