Ropley Dean

Ropley railway station is a railway station in Ropley, Hampshire, England, which opened in 1865 and reopened in 1977 after four years' closure, to be served by steam and select diesel trains on the Watercress Line which shares its terminus at Alton railway station along with the more major Alton Line.

Gundleton is a village in Hampshire, England. It is in the civil parish of Bighton. Its nearest railway station is the restored Watercress Line in New Alresford, about 3 miles (4.8 km) from the village. The village is notable for having taken place in the English Civil War, amongst the Battle of Cheriton.

Bramdean Common is near Winchester, Hampshire, England.Bramdean means "the valley where brooms grow" - broom being the gorse bush originally prevalent in the valley that carries a yellow flower. There was a Roman villa near the village, excavated in 1823, by the Greenwood family of Brockwood (then Brookwood) Park. The name goes back to 923. It is close to Hinton Ampner. There is a Church in the Wood which was built in 1883, by the Reverend Alfred Caesar Bishop, for the farm workers of Bramdean Common. The church later became used by Romany families, who camped on the Common, and practised charcoal burning on the land. It is built of corrugated iron and took five weeks to construct. It was here in 1993 that the Dongas road protest group moved after being driven from Twyford Down by bulldozers.

It has an acreage of 4,684 acres (1,896 ha), situated 4 miles (6.4 km) east from New Alresford, and is served by a station on the Mid Hants Railway heritage line at Ropley Dean, just over 1 mile (1.6 km) from the village shops. It is 6.7 miles (10.8 km) southwest of Alton, just off the A31 road. It lies within the diocese of Winchester. The St Swithun's Way, part of the Pilgrims' Way from Winchester to Canterbury, passes through the village. It is distinguished by its general absence of pavements in favour of boundary walls, hedges and mature trees. Ropley holds an annual Boxing Day walk, and a pram race on the spring bank holiday in May.

Brockwood Park is a country estate located in the civil parish of Bramdean and Hinton Ampner, in the Winchester district, in the county of Hampshire, England. Historically, it was situated in the now reformed parish of Bramdean. There is a Krishnamurti school on the grounds of the estate known as Brockwood Park School.

The Battle of Cheriton of 29 March 1644 was an important Parliamentarian victory during the First English Civil War. Sir William Waller's "Army of the Southern Association" defeated a Royalist force jointly commanded by the Earl of Forth and Sir Ralph Hopton. Defeat ended Royalist hopes of retaking South East England and forced them onto the defensive for the rest of 1644. Although less well known than the Battle of Marston Moor, in his "History of the Rebellion" senior Royalist advisor Clarendon considered Cheriton an equally disastrous defeat.
