Cavendish Woods is a 53.5-hectare (132-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north-west of Glemsford in Suffolk.These ancient woods are managed as coppice with standards. The main standard tree is oak, and the flora is diverse, including the uncommon oxlip. There are many fallow deer, and breeding birds include woodcock, snipe and treecreeper.The woods are in four blocks, Shadowbush Wood adjacent to Long Wood, King's Wood, Northay Wood and Easty Wood. A public footpath goes through Easty Wood.

Risbridge is a hundred of Suffolk, consisting of 58,468 acres (236.61 km2).Risbridge Hundred forms the south western corner of Suffolk extending 15 miles (24 km) from north to south and between 4 and 9 miles (14 km) in breadth. It is bounded on the west by Cambridgeshire on the south by Essex, on the east by Babergh and Thingoe Hundreds and on the north by Lackford Hundred. It is in the Franchise or Liberty of St Edmund, in the Archdeaconry of Sudbury, Deanery of Clare and Diocese of Ely. The southern boundary with Essex is formed by the River Stour and the hundred is crossed by a number of streams. It is generally a fertile agricultural area with predominantly clay soil. The major towns in the hundred are Clare and Haverhill. Listed as Risebruge in the Domesday Book, the meaning of the name is not fully understood but probably "Hrisa's bridge" or a similar personal name. The bridge in question would almost certainly have crossed the Stour, an important crossing at a time when bridges were rare. However similar place-names (ex: Ricebridge near Leigh in Surrey, Risbro in Sweden) are believed to have been bridges with a causeway over marshy land made from brushwood (ris) held by wooden pegs.

Glemsford Pits is a 37.5-hectare (93-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest south of Glemsford in Suffolk. The River Stour, which forms the boundary between Suffolk and Essex, runs through the site, which is thus in both counties. The site has gravel workings which are now disused and filled with water, as well as the river. Thirteen species of dragonfly and damselfly have been recorded, including one which is rare in Britain, the ruddy darter dragonfly, and two which are locally uncommon, the four-spotted chaser dragonfly and the red-eyed damselfly. Aquatic plants include the yellow water-lily and mare's tail. Rabbits graze acidic grassland, and there are also areas of woodland, scrub herb and fen. Most of the site is private land with no public access, but a footpath runs through the western end.
