Chadderton F.C.

Chadderton is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, Greater Manchester, England, on the River Irk and Rochdale Canal. It is located in the foothills of the Pennines, 1 mile (1.6 km) west of Oldham, 5 miles (8.0 km) south of Rochdale and 6 miles (9.7 km) north-east of Manchester. Historically part of Lancashire, Chadderton's early history is marked by its status as a manorial township, with its own lords, who included the Asshetons, Chethams, Radclyffes and Traffords. Chadderton in the Middle Ages was chiefly distinguished by its two mansions, Foxdenton Hall and Chadderton Hall, and by the prestigious families who occupied them. Farming was the main industry of the area, with locals supplementing their incomes by hand-loom woollen weaving in the domestic system. Chadderton's urbanisation and expansion coincided largely with developments in textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution and the Victorian era. A late-19th century factory-building boom transformed Chadderton from a rural township into a major mill town and the second most populous urban district in the United Kingdom. More than 50 cotton mills had been built in Chadderton by 1914. Although Chadderton's industries declined in the mid-20th century, the town continued to grow as a result of suburbanisation and urban renewal. The legacy of the town's industrial past remains visible in its landscape of red-brick cotton mills, now used as warehouses or distribution centres. Some of these are listed buildings because of their architectural, historical and cultural significance.

Baretrees (or Bare Trees) is a residential area of Chadderton in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, in Greater Manchester, England. It takes its name from a former hamlet in the north east of the town in what is now the Laburnum Avenue area.A local primary school, Bare Trees, bears the locality's name on nearby Holly Grove.Bare Trees also has an active residents association.One of the fifteen fatalities of the Peterloo Massacre, Thomas Buckley, was from the hamlet of Bare Trees. Buckley, a gardener aged 62, was described by his neighbours as a 'person fanciful to the fruit garden, a staunch patriot, an enemy to oppression'. Buckley was bayoneted and slashed by a sabre.

Stock Brook is a residential and industrial area in the town of Chadderton in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, Greater Manchester, England. It is contiguous with Chadderton's town centre area and with Nimble Nook, Cowhill and Nordens. The area takes its name from a local stream, the Stock Brook. The brook itself has been culverted through most of the area since the 19th century, emerging at a point near Broadway at the site of the former Bank Mill.The area is served by St Luke's (Church of England) Primary School.

Textile Mill, Chadderton was a cotton spinning mill in Chadderton, Oldham, Greater Manchester, England. It was built in 1882 by Potts, Pickup & Dixon for the Textile Mill Co. Ltd, and closed in 1927. It was taken over by the Lancashire Cotton Corporation in the late 1940s and passed to Courtaulds in 1964 and used for cotton waste sorting. Half of the building was destroyed by fire on 11 July 1950, but the remaining section continued to be used for cotton waste sorting by W. H. Holt and Son until 1988. Lancashire England

Chadderton Town Hall is a municipal building on Middleton Road, Chadderton, Greater Manchester, England. The town hall, which was the headquarters of Chadderton Urban District Council, is a grade II listed building.

Nordens is a suburban area of Chadderton in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, Greater Manchester.Lying in a valley archaically known as Hunt Clough, Nordens is located around the junction of Middleton Road and Hunt Lane, around 0.7 miles to the west of Chadderton's commercial centre on Middleton Road and is contiguous with the Chadderton Park, Firwood Park and Stock Brook areas of the town. Semi-rural Foxdenton lies to the south.The name Nordens derives from North Dene or Valley and is commemorated in the name North Dene Park, a street name in the district.Nordens Lane (later Nordens Road), a short stretch of which still exists as Nordens Street, was one of Chadderton's oldest roads and was one of the main routes leading to the nearby Chadderton Hall manor house. Suburban housing now lies on the land the lane went through.Between the mid-1960s and 1992 Nordens Road was the home ground of the now-defunct Oldham Town Football Club (previously known as Oldham Dew) who played in the North West Counties League. The ground is now open space, the club has relocated to the Whitebank Stadium in Oldham. The Radclyffe School lies in the vicinity of this district. The Hunt Lane Tavern is a public house in the area, dating back to 1854. The pub has its origins in a farmhouse which was situated in Hunt Clough. This was a valley through which ran the stream known as Spring Brook. The pub, first licensed in 1840, was in the area of Hunt Clough now built over by the Swallow Fields housing development off Middleton Road. Adjacent to the pub lies the former Nordens Branch of the Co-operative Wholesale Society dating from the early 20th century although the building is now used for other retail purposes.The extensive Chadderton Cemetery, which opened in 1857, lies in close vicinity at Spring Brook. The Spring Brook Works, a major finishing factory, also lay at Spring Brook just off Nordens Road. It was built in 1875, being demolished in 1985. Suburban housing now covers this area.In 1914 a branch of the now-defunct Middleton Junction and Oldham Branch Railway to Chadderton Coal and Mineral Yard opened necessitating the realignment of Hunt Lane so as to enter Middleton Road further west. Thus it no longer faced the Hunt Lane Tavern pub. This confuses people to this day with the Hunt Lane Chippy and the Hunt Lane Tavern no longer being adjacent to the lane of that name.

Kent Mill, Chadderton was a cotton spinning mill in Chadderton, Oldham, Greater Manchester. It was built in 1908 for the Kent Mill Co. It was taken over by the Lancashire Cotton Corporation in 1938 and passed to Courtaulds in 1964. Production finished in 1991 and it was demolished in 1994.

Manor Mill, Chadderton is an early twentieth century, five storey cotton spinning mill in Chadderton, Oldham, Greater Manchester. It was built in 1906. It was taken over by the Lancashire Cotton Corporation in the 1930s and passed to Courtaulds in 1964. Production finished in 1990.

Magnet Mill, Chadderton is a cotton spinning mill in Chadderton, Oldham, Greater Manchester. It was built by the Magnet Mill Ltd. in 1902, but purchased by the Lancashire Cotton Corporation in 1935. It was later taken over by the Courtaulds Group. Ceasing textile production in December 1966, it was demolished soon after. A suburban residential estate now occupies this site. It was driven by a 2200 hp twin tandem compound engine by George Saxon & Co, Openshaw, 1903. It had a 27-foot flywheel with 35 ropes, operating at 64½ rpm.

Cowhill (archaically Cow Hill) is a locality of Chadderton, in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, Greater Manchester, England. It is located 0.5 miles (0.80 km) southeast of Chadderton town centre close to its eastern boundary with Oldham and is contiguous with the Block Lane, Stock Brook, Butler Green and Nimble Nook areas of the town and with Freehold and Westwood in Oldham. An ancient hamlet which grew into an industrial village, Cowhill is now a residential area and includes a large housing development, Crossley Estate, built as part of widespread redevelopment of the area in the 1960s and 1970s. 2014 saw the completion of major refurbishment of the estate including 87 new houses and a new community centre, The Crossley Centre.Adjoining the Crossley Estate are the Crossley Playing Fields which features five football pitches plus changing room facilities. The playing fields and changing rooms were completely refurbished during 2015. The work was carried out by Oldham Council and supported by the Premier League and the FA Facilities Fund, which provides grants towards developing new or refurbished grassroots football facilities.Cow Hill sub post office, located at 299 Denton Lane, was the last institution to bear the locality's name. It closed as part of the Post Office's restructuring of services in 2008–09. The area is served by Christ Church (Church of England) Primary School.

Busk is a locality and archaically a hamlet in the town of Chadderton in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, Greater Manchester, England. It is located to the east of Chadderton town centre, on the town's eastern border with Oldham, contiguous with the Westwood area of that town. The hamlet lay along Busk Road, on a stretch of the road that is now a cycle path. A small recreation ground, Berry's Field, serves the area.Since local government re-organisation in 1974 the area lies within the Coldhurst electoral ward district which lies mainly within the town of Oldham. A proposal by The Chadderton Historical Society to move Busk back into the Chadderton North ward was rejected by the Boundary Commission in 2003.The place-name Busk survives in the immediately adjoining streets to the west and south of the original hamlet, known as Busk Estate.
