St Lawrence's Church, Thorpe

Thorpe is a Nottinghamshire village or hamlet lying to the east of East Stoke about a mile off the A46 Fosse Way, and situated in the countryside southwest of Newark.

St. Peter's Church, Farndon is a parish church in the Church of England in Farndon, Nottinghamshire. The church is Grade I listed as a building of outstanding architectural or historic interest.

It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building, and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. It stands in a field and is described as a "solitary barn-like chapel".

Farndon is a small village and civil parish in Newark and Sherwood district of Nottinghamshire, England. It is on the historic Fosse road and is 3 miles (4 km) south-west of Newark-on-Trent. It is on the banks of the River Trent. The population of the civil parish as of the 2011 census was 2,405. The A46 previously ran through the village until the development of a new dual carriageway bypass.

Elston is a village and civil parish in Nottinghamshire, England, to the south-west of Newark, and a mile from the A46 Fosse Way. The population of the civil parish taken at the 2011 Census was 631. It lies between the rivers Trent and Devon, with the village "set amongst trees and farmland less than a mile from the A46.... Newark is five miles to the north, with... Lincoln and Nottingham some 18 miles north and south-west respectively."

East Stoke is a small village and civil parish in Nottinghamshire situated about half a mile to the east of the River Trent and lying about six miles southwest of Newark-upon-Trent. The population of the civil parish (including Thorpe as taken in the 2011 Census was 152. The A46 Fosse Way ran through East Stoke for many years: cutting the village in two with constant traffic: but since 2012 has been replaced by a new multi-lane A46 which now runs half a mile to the east. East Stoke is thought to have been the site of the Roman settlement of Ad Pontem; the "place of the bridge" – though this is disputed. In 1487 East Stoke was the scene of one of the bloodiest battle in British history: the Battle of Stoke Field between Yorkist rebels (supported by largely Irish and Swiss mercenaries) facing the army of Henry VII. The Yorkists were arrayed on the brow of a hill to the south east of the village, with their right flank anchored on a high spot known as Burham Furlong. The Yorkists were routed by Henry VII's army and fled towards the Trent; many were killed in the retreat. A popular tale is that the Yorkists were slaughtered in a ravine known as the Bloody Gutter. However, any local will be happy to inform you that the damp cutting you can still view on the site today was known as the Red Gutter. This was because it was the local source of red clay. The burial pits on the battlefield all lie off to the west along Church Lane. To signify his victory Henry raised his standard on Burham Furlong. The spot is marked by a stone memorial with the legend "Here stood the Burrand Bush planted on the spot where Henry VII placed his standard after the Battle of Stoke 16 June 1487" It is thought that several thousand combatants lost their lives in less than three hours.

Hawton is an English village and civil parish in Nottinghamshire, about two miles (3.2 km) south of town of Newark-on-Trent, near the River Devon, a tributary of the River Trent. Its population was recorded as 147 in the 2011 Census.

Stoke Hall is a Grade II listed 10,382 sq ft (964.5 m2) mansion, near the village of East Stoke in Nottinghamshire, England. It is located near the River Trent. The red-brick house was built in 1812 for the Bromley baronets by Lewis Wyatt, who included parts of an earlier building. It was part demolished in the 1920s. It was Grade II listed on 16 January 1967.The house is registered as a venue for weddings. The church of St Oswald is adjacent.

St Oswald's Church, East Stoke is a Grade II* listed Church of England parish in the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham in East Stoke, Nottinghamshire. Originally built in the 13th or 14th century, it was largely rebuilt in 1738 and most of the furniture is from the 19th century. It is adjacent to Stoke Hall.

The Battle of Stoke Field on 16 June 1487 may be considered the last battle of the Wars of the Roses, since it was the last major engagement between contenders for the throne whose claims derived from descent from the houses of Lancaster and York respectively. The Battle of Bosworth Field, two years previously, had established King Henry VII on the throne, ending the last period of Yorkist rule and initiating that of the Tudors. The Battle of Stoke Field was the decisive engagement in an attempt by leading Yorkists to unseat him in favour of the pretender Lambert Simnel. Though it is often portrayed as almost a footnote to the major battles between York and Lancaster, it may have been slightly larger than Bosworth, with much heavier casualties, possibly because of the terrain which forced the two sides into close, attritional combat. In the end, though, Henry's victory was crushing. Almost all the leading Yorkists were killed in the battle.

Staythorpe C Power Station is a 1,735 MWe gas-fired power station at Staythorpe between Southwell and Newark-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire, England, between the River Trent and Nottingham to Lincoln railway line. The station was handed over to the owner RWE from Alstom Power with full commercial operation being achieved in December 2010. The official opening ceremony attended by Charles Hendry, Minister of State took place on 9 May 2011.The £680 million plant is owned by the German energy company, RWE. It is the second largest Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power station in the UK and has an overall efficiency in excess of 58%.
