Ely, Cardiff

Ely is the name of an electoral ward in the west of the city of Cardiff, Wales, which covers its namesake community, Ely. The ward elects three county councillors to the County Council of the City and County of Cardiff. It has previously been represented by the Labour Party, until February 2019 when Plaid Cymru won one of the council seats.

Cowbridge Road West (Welsh: Heol y Bontfaen Gorllewin) is a major road in western Cardiff, the capital of Wales and forms part of the A48 road. It divides the districts of Ely and Caerau and connects inner Cardiff to Culverhouse Cross and eventually the M4 motorway via the A4232. It also connects Cardiff ultimately to towns and villages such as Barry, Wenvoe, Cowbridge and Peterston-Super-Ely which can be accessed via the A48 from Culverhouse Cross. Ely Hospital was a large psychiatric hospital that closed in 1996 and has since been demolished. It was near to the fire station on Cowbridge Road West.

The Cardiff Ely bread riots, or Ely petrol riots, was the outbreak of violence that occurred in the council suburb of Ely in the capital of Wales, Cardiff, during September 1991. The unrest was attributed to a dispute between two shopkeepers over who could sell bread and other food products which escalated into a riot involving up to 500 participants. An estimated 175 police officers were mobilised, including reinforcements called in from the Vale of Glamorgan, to deal with the unrest.

Caerau [ˈkai̯r.ai] is a community in the west of Cardiff, capital city of Wales. Often considered part of Wenvoe by gully, Heol Trelai is the main road or avenue, lined with large trees. Dominated mostly by private housing, it has the Western Leisure Centre, supermarkets, schools and churches.

Ty Bronna is a large detached house on St Fagan's Road in the Cardiff suburb of Fairwater. It was designed by C. F. A. Voysey for Hastings Watson, a timber merchant, and built between 1903 and 1906. The house has been listed Grade II since May 1975. It is the only listed building designed by Voysey in Wales.The house sits on a hillside surrounded by trees above the St Fagans Road, the former stables to the south of the house were also designed by Voysey, built in 1904, and are Grade II listed. The RCAHMW report on Ty Bronna praises Voysey as having "...exploited the slope by placing the entrance at the short west end so that he could open up a five-arched veranda almost the full width of the south front which faced the view over the valley of the River Ely". The house is 3 storeys in height, capped by a hipped roof, battered buttresses rise from the ground to the eaves. It has a bowed east window with a recessed veranda and was restored in 2002.

St. Mary the Virgin Church is a deconsecrated and ruined church in the parish of Caerau with Ely, Cardiff, Wales. It was built in the 13th century on a Roman encampment and closed for the last time in 1973.

Caerau Hillfort (Welsh: Bryngaer Caerau) is a large triangular multivallate Iron Age hillfort, built on a previously occupied Neolithic site, occupying the western tip of an extensive ridge-top plateau in the western suburbs of Caerau and Ely, Cardiff, Wales. It is the largest Iron Age site of its type in south Wales and also one of the largest in Great Britain. The old parish church, St Mary's, and a small ringwork, almost certainly a medieval castle site probably contemporary with the church, stand within the hillfort on the north-eastern side.

Ely Mill is a proposed railway station in Cardiff, Wales, which will serve the Ely area of the city. It is planned as part of the South Wales Metro. The station was on the Welsh Government New Railway Station Prioritisation in 2017. Proposals were made in 2024 for an extension to improve rail connectivity across the city. The project was part of the UK government's "Restoring Your Railways" fund.

Fairwater (Welsh: Y Tyllgoed) is a district and community in the west of Cardiff, capital of Wales. It is located a few miles from Culverhouse Cross which connects Cardiff to the M4 motorway. The population taken at the 2011 census was 12,981.

Ely Hospital (Welsh: Ysbyty Trelái) was a large psychiatric hospital in the Ely district of Cardiff, Wales. An enquiry into the ill-treatment of patients at the hospital led to reforms to services for people with intellectual disabilities throughout the UK.

St David's Church, Fairwater is a Lutheran church in Fairwater, Cardiff, Wales. There has been a Lutheran community in central Cardiff since the 19th Century, but that in Fairwater is far more recent, forming only after new housing development in the post-war years. The church was designed by Vernon Kinch of Alex Gordon and Partners, and was completed in 1961. it belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of England, and became a grade II listed building in 2007. Aside from some minor changes in joinery and the replacement of the original windows, the church is largely unaltered.

Pentrebane (Welsh: Pentre-Baen) is a district in the west of Cardiff, capital of Wales. It is part of the Fairwater community.
