Tilton railway station

Tilton Cutting is a 4.4 hectares (11 acres) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest west of Tilton on the Hill in Leicestershire. It is a Geological Conservation Review site, and is owned and managed by the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust as Tilton Railway Cutting.This is the best site in the East Midlands which exposes the sequence of rocks in the Lower Jurassic around 180 million years ago. There are many fossils, including Tiltoniceras acutum, an age-diagnostic ammonite. The site has rich flora and diverse common birds.There is access from the Tilton on the Hill to Oakham road.

Tilton on the Hill is a village and (as just Tilton) a former civil parish, now in the parish of Tilton on the Hill and Halstead in the Harborough district of Leicestershire. The population of the civil parish of Tilton on the Hill and Halstead at the 2011 census was 601. It lies 2 miles north of the A47, on the B6047 to Melton Mowbray. Halstead civil parish (grid reference SK750056) was merged with Tilton on 1 April 1935, while the deserted medieval village of Whatborough (SK772059) was merged in on 1 April 1994. Marefield remains a separate civil parish, but is part of the Tilton Electoral Ward. In 1931 the parish of Tilton (prior to the merges) had a population of 152. St Peter's Tilton, the Parish Church is in the parish of Halstead, as is the vicarage. Tilton on the Hill is one of the highest places in East Leicestershire at 719 feet (219 m) above sea level, with the Mill House standing at the highest point. Whatborough is the highest summit in the eastern half of the county. The centre of the village was designated a Conservation Area in 1975, with the boundaries updated in 1994 and 2005.In 2009, the village was named as the "Best Village in Leicestershire" in the Calor Village of the Year competition and also won Calor "Sustainability Village of the Year" for the Midlands.Tilton is represented in cricket by Tilton and Lowesby CC. Owston and Newbold is a civil parish, 5 miles (8 km) west of Oakham in the Harborough district, in the county of Leicestershire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census (including Marefield) was 112.The Parish Church of St Andrew, Owston, began as an Augustinian monastic foundation before 1161, and substantial buildings stood around the site of the current church. Owston Abbey was never prosperous, and when dissolved at the reformation had 6 canons. The parish retained a part of the Abbey Church for its use when the rest was demolished, resulting in an unusually proportioned building, with its doorway through the tower on the south side. The relationship between the current church and former monastic arrangements remains uncertain.

Marefield is a hamlet and civil parish in the Harborough district of Leicestershire, England. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 20. At the census 2011 the population remained less than 100 and is included in the civil parish of Owston and Newbold. It was also the birthplace of Wire drummer Robert Gotobed, and Thomas Hooker, one of the main founders of Connecticut, USA.

Marefield Junction was a railway junction in Marefield, Leicestershire, England. Railway lines from the triangular junction ran westwards to Leicester, northwards to Nottingham and south to Market Harborough. There was never a station at this location, but just to the north was John O' Gaunt railway station; just to the south was Tilton railway station, and just to the west was Lowesby railway station. The viaduct close to the junction still exists although the line has been closed for nearly 50 years.

Leighfield Forest SSSI is an 11.3 hectares (28 acres) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Skeffington in Leicestershire, England. It consists of several fragments, including Tugby Wood, Loddington Reddish, Brown's Wood, Skeffington Wood and Tilton Wood, of the former medieval hunting Leighfield Forest, which straddles Leicestershire and Rutland. It is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade II.These woods in the Eye Brook valley date back at least to the thirteenth century. The dominant trees are ash and oak. The diverse moths and beetles include some rare species, and others are at the northern limit of their distribution. There are also areas of grassland and marsh.Roads and footpaths go through some of the woods but others are private.

Skeffington is a village and civil parish in the Harborough district of Leicestershire, England. It lies 11 miles/18 km east of Leicester on the A47 Uppingham road, between Billesdon and Tugby and Keythorpe. The population at the 2011 census (including Rolleston) was 223.

Skeffington Hall is a 15th-century Manor House which stands in parkland off the main street of the village of Skeffington, Leicestershire, England. It is a Grade II* listed building and is privately owned.The house was originally constructed in about 1450 and extended c1530 and again in the early or mid 17th century. It is built to an H-shaped plan in two storeys of coursed ironstone rubble with white limestone ashlar dressings and Swithland slate roofs. The main frontage, dating from the 17th century, has eight bays with a central projecting porch. A castellated parapet runs between projecting gables at each end. In the 16th century the house was the birthplace of Thomas Skevington, Bishop of Bangor and Sir William Skeffington, Lord Deputy of Ireland. It was later owned by William Farrell, whose son Sir William Farrell-Skeffington, 1st Baronet, an officer in the British Army, adopted the Skeffington surname and sold the Hall to the Tailby family just before his death in 1815. William Ward Tailby (1825-1914) was an avid huntsman and established his own pack of foxhounds at the hall in 1856 which became the Fernie Hunt. He was succeeded in turn by his nephew, T.M.J. Tailby (1862–1916) and George William A. Tailby (born 1893). Sir Richard Sutton, 2nd Baronet and a Master of the Quorn Hunt also resided at the Hall.

Launde Woods is a 99 hectares (240 acres) nature reserve north of Launde in Leicestershire. It is owned by the Leicester Diocesan Board of Finance and leased to the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust. The site is in two areas, Launde Big Wood, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and Launde Park Wood.Launde Big Wood is ancient semi-natural woodland with a rich ground flora, including wood anemone, wood forget-me-not and sweet woodruff. Most of Launde Park Wood has been planted with conifers, but the northern third has the same range of plants as the Big Wood.There is public access to the woods, which are located on either side of the road south of Launde Abbey.

Sauvey Castle is a medieval castle, near Withcote, Leicestershire, England. It was probably built by King John in 1211 as a secluded hunting lodge in Leighfield Forest. It comprised a ringwork or shell keep, with an adjacent bailey; earthwork dams were constructed to flood the area around the castle, creating a large, shallow moat. The castle was occupied by the Count of Aumale in the early reign of Henry III, but it then remained in the control of the Crown and was used by royal foresters until it fell into disuse in the 14th century. By the end of the 17th century, its walls and buildings had been dismantled or destroyed, leaving only the earthworks, which remain in a good condition in the 21st century.
