The Curtis Culwell Center (formerly the Garland Special Events Center) is a 6,860-fixed seat arena (8,500 full capacity) and conference center in Garland, Texas. It opened in 2005 and was designed by HKS, Inc. and constructed at a cost of $31.5 million by Lee Lewis Construction with engineering by Walter P. Moore, Blum Consulting Engineers, and RLK Engineers Inc. The arena is the property of the Garland Independent School District (GISD).

The Curtis Culwell Center attack was a failed terrorist attack on an exhibit featuring cartoon images of Muhammad at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, Texas on May 3, 2015, which ended in a shootout with police guarding the event, and the deaths of the two perpetrators. The attackers shot an unarmed Garland Independent School District (GISD) security officer in the ankle. Shortly after opening fire, both attackers were shot by an off-duty Garland police officer and killed by SWAT.The FBI had been monitoring the two attackers for years, and an undercover agent was right behind them when the first shots were fired. The injured security guard filed a lawsuit against the FBI in October 2017, claiming the FBI was partially responsible for his injuries.The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) claimed responsibility for the attack plot, the first time the militant group took credit for an attack in the United States. ISIL's claim of responsibility was not verified, and U.S. officials stated that the attack appears to have been inspired, but not directed, by ISIL. An online ISIL persona run by internet troll Joshua Ryne Goldberg had posted maps to the exhibition, and urged his followers to attack the event. Goldberg pleaded guilty to federal charges in December 2017. His persona was retweeted by one of the attackers on the morning of the attack, and Goldberg claimed responsibility for inciting the attack to multiple news outlets and in his plea agreement.

The creek rises in west Plano, flowing south-east passing under the Collin Creek Shopping Center, and major roads including President George Bush Turnpike, U.S. Route 75 before crossing into Dallas County in Garland, passing the Curtis Culwell Center before meeting the Rowlett Creek at State Highway 78.

Berkner High School. Founded in 1977, Apollo educates students in grades 7-8. Its approximate annual enrollment is 800 students, nearly twice that of the Texas state average for middle schools. Firewheel Town Center is a 998,347-square-foot (92,749.5 m2) open-air regional shopping mall in Garland, Texas. The mall is located on the northeast corner of President George Bush Turnpike and State Highway 78. The mall features Dillard's, Macy's , Dick's Sporting Goods, and Barnes & Noble, in addition to an AMC Theatres. The mall opened on October 7, 2005. Although "coming soon" signs first appeared in 1984, actual construction did not begin until early 2003. It was completed in 2005 and is owned by the Simon Property Group. Unlike a traditional mall, Firewheel Town Center was designed in the new urbanism style. Similar area shopping centers include Southlake Town Square, The Shops at Legacy, Uptown Village at Cedar Hill, The Shops at Highland Village, and The Village at Allen. The Firewheel name comes from the nearby Firewheel Golf Park, which in turn is named for a flower that grows naturally in the area.

Texas's 32nd congressional district of the United States House of Representatives serves a suburban area of northeastern Dallas County and a sliver of Collin and Denton counties. The district was created after the 2000 United States census, when Texas went from 30 seats to 32 seats. It was then modified in 2011 after the 2010 census. The current representative is Democrat Colin Allred. Among other communities, the district includes part of the North Dallas neighborhood of Preston Hollow, which has been the home of George W. Bush since the end of his presidency. While it previously contained much of the Western Dallas County area, including Irving, since the 2011–2012 redistricting cycle, the district now covers mostly the Northern and Eastern Dallas County areas, and a small portion of Colin County. In 2018, civil rights attorney and former NFL player Colin Allred won a heavily contested primary for the Democratic nomination, and defeated Republican incumbent Pete Sessions in the November 6 election. The district, like most suburban districts in Texas, had long been considered solidly Republican. However, its pre-2022 configuration was considered more of a swing district as a result of changing demographics, along with antipathy towards former President Donald Trump in suburban areas. After 2022, the district was reconfigured to be solidly Democratic, re-electing Allred with over 60% of the vote.

Garland Christian Academy (GCA) is a private preK-12 Christian school in Garland, Texas. As of 2016 it had about 340 students.Lavon Drive Baptist Church voted to establish the school in 1971 and the school opened in August 1972 with 12 teachers and 136 students. It initially had Kindergarten through 6th grade. Grades 7-11 opened in 1973 and grade 12 opened in 1974.
