The Battle of Crogen is an engagement said to have taken place in Wales during Henry II of England's summer 1165 campaign against an alliance of Welsh kingdoms led by King of Gwynedd, Owain Gwynedd. Later Welsh chronicles recorded that a detachment of Welsh troops inflicted a number of casualties on the Anglo-Norman army in the Ceiriog Valley; Henry subsequently abandoned the campaign after an attempt to cross the Berwyn Mountains was thwarted by severe weather. It is unclear whether events in the Ceiriog Valley represented a pitched battle, a series of smaller engagements or a minor skirmish: all three have been argued, as well as the possibility no fighting took place during the 1165 campaign. It has been suggested that the idea of a "battle" should be considered as folklore rather than as a genuine historical event. There are few contemporary accounts: 19th century and later accounts of the "battle" rely heavily on David Powel's 1584 Historie of Cambria, an unreliable historical source.

The Oak at the Gate of the Dead (in Welsh: "Derwen Adwy'r Meirwon"), or Crogen Oak is a veteran tree in Wrexham County Borough, Wales. Located near the 8th-century Offa's Dyke, the tree is thought to be more than 1,000 years old. The tree is located near the site of the 1165 Battle of Crogen, and is named for a supposed burial site of battle dead nearby.

Chirk Castle (Welsh: Castell y Waun) is a Grade I listed castle located in Chirk, Wrexham County Borough, Wales. It is now owned and run by the National Trust.

Pontfadog is a village in the Ceiriog Valley west of Chirk in Wrexham County Borough, Wales; it is part of the community of Glyntraian. Like the neighbouring village of Glyn Ceiriog, the growth of Pontfadog is connected to the area's former quarrying industry. The village's name translates as "Bridge of Madoc", taking its name from a bridge over the River Ceiriog. Until April 2013, an oak tree stood near the village. Entitled the Pontfadog Oak, the tree reputed to be the oldest in the United Kingdom at the time; however, strong winds on the 17 April 2013 caused the tree to topple overnight.The Glyn Valley Tramway had a station in the village, which has now been preserved by the Glyn Valley Tramway Group. In addition to the Swan Inn, the village's pub, there is also a village shop with a post office counter.

The Pontfadog Oak was a sessile oak tree (Quercus petraea) that stood on Cilcochwyn farm above the village of Pontfadog, in the Ceiriog Valley west of Chirk in the county borough of Wrexham, Wales, until it was blown over in the early hours of 18 April 2013. At the time it was reputed to be the oldest and largest oak tree in the United Kingdom.Known as "Wales's national tree", its girth was over 16 metres (53 ft) in 1881.In 1996 using Forestry Commission techniques, its age was estimated as between 1,181 and 1,628 years.

Bronygarth is a small village in the Ceiriog Valley near Oswestry in Shropshire, England at grid reference SJ268370. The village is on the England–Wales border with some buildings in Wales in the Glyntraian local government community.

Glyntraian (Welsh: Glyntraean) is a community in Wrexham County Borough, Wales. The parish of Glyntraian, lying at the mouth of the Ceiriog Valley, was formed when the ancient parish of Llangollen was divided into three traeanau ("traean/traian" being the Welsh for "third"): Llangollen Traean, Trefor Traean, and Glyn Traean - which became known as Glyntraian. It contained the historic townships of Cilcochwyn, Crogeniddon, Crogenwladus, Erwallo, Hafodgynfor, Nantygwryd, Pennant and Talygarth. Today, Glyntraian contains the villages of Dolywern, Llechrydau, Llwynmawr and Pontfadog; it is governed by Glyntraian Community Council (Welsh: Cyngor Cymuned Glyntraean), which replaced Glyntraian Parish Council under the Local Government Act 1972. At the 2001 Census, the community area had a total population of 878, falling to 822 at the 2011 Census.

Trevor Hall is a large grade I-listed Georgian mansion standing in 85 acres (35 hectares) of parkland at Trevor, near Llangollen, Denbighshire, Wales. The three storey house was built in 1742 in red brick to an H-shaped floor plan. A pedimented doorcase is approached by a double flight of steps. The estate had belonged to the Trevor family since medieval times and was at one time the home of Bishop John Trevor, who built the original Llangollen Bridge in 1345. The present house was built for John Lloyd of Glanhavon, Montgomeryshire, who in 1715 had married Mary Trevor, heiress of the Trevor estate. A carved stone on the outside of the house has their initials, the date 1742, and the Latin motto Dum spiro spero (whilst I breathe, I hope). Ownership passed to the Rice Thomas family when the last Lloyd heiress married Rice Thomas of Coed Helen near Caernarvon. They extended the house and occupied in until 1820, after which it was let to various tenants, including the manager of the local ironworks, a shipping broker from Liverpool, and ultimately the Edwards family, owners of the Trefynant Fire Clay Works of Ruabon. James Coster Edwards was High Sheriff of Denbighshire in 1892. The Edwards family carried out various improvements designed by Oswestry architect W.H. Spaull and occupied the hall for three generations, after which, in 1956, the property reverted to the Coed Helen estate. They had no use for the house and it was sold to a local timber merchant, who felled the trees and planned to demolish the house. Saved by a Preservation order in 1961, the hall was acquired by the WRVS, but damaged by fire in 1963. It was then purchased by a local farmer and equipped with a flat roof for use as a cowshed. The property was purchased in 1987 by Michael Tree, then a chartered surveyor of the Crown Estates, who undertook its restoration before selling it in 1998 to Louis and Louise Parker, who further restored the grounds and interior. It now functions as a country hotel. The former GWR Hall class locomotive 5998 was named after the hall.

Sun Bank Halt in Wrexham County Borough, Wales, was a minor station on the Ruabon to Barmouth line. It opened as Garth & Sun Bank Halt but was renamed on 1 July 1906. The line was double track and there was never a signal box nor freight facilities here. On 7 September 1945, the bank of the Shropshire Union Canal failed, causing the trackbed to be washed away near the halt. A mail and freight train, hauled by GWR 4300 Class 2-6-0 No. 6315, was derailed, killing one person and injuring two people. A fire broke out, destroying all but the brake van of the train's consist.

Pont Cysyllte, also known as Cysylltau Bridge or Bont Bridge, is a 17th-century road bridge crossing the River Dee near the village of Trevor, Wrexham County Borough, Wales. It lies 200 m west of Thomas Telford's Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and, carrying the B5434 road, is the main connection between Trevor and nearby Froncysyllte. The sandstone bridge is dated '1697', though it was substantially rebuilt during the 18th century, and only the south arch and part of the south pier are original. It became a Grade I listed structure in 1963 and is also a scheduled monument.The bridge comprises three arches, with full-height triangular cutwaters at up- and down-stream ends of both piers, each topped by a pedestrian refuge. The older, south arch has a span of 10.7 metres (35 ft) and the two newer arches have spans of 14.0 metres (46 ft) and 14.2 metres (47 ft).The bridge is frequently damaged by motor vehicles being, at its narrowest, only 2.0 m (6 ft 6 in) wide. Vehicles are required to give way to any oncoming vehicle already on the bridge.

Froncysyllte (; Welsh pronunciation: [vrɔŋkəˈsəɬte]), colloquially known as Fron, is a village in Wrexham County Borough, Wales and stands on the banks of the River Dee and the Llangollen Canal. It is situated on the main A5 road which runs from London to Holyhead. It is in the community of Llangollen Rural. The population was 606 as of 2011 UK census.The name is derived from the Welsh bron (here lenited to fron), here meaning a hill breast, along with the name Cysyllte, one of the old townships of the parish of Llangollen. The anglicised spelling Vroncysyllte was commonly used until the mid 20th century.

Clwyd South (Welsh: De Clwyd) is a constituency of the Senedd. It elects one Member of the Senedd by the first past the post method of election. Also, however, it is one of nine constituencies in the North Wales electoral region, which elects four additional members, in addition to nine constituency members, to produce a degree of proportional representation for the region as a whole.
