At 07:26 BST on 19 September 2021, police officers were called to a residential property on Chandos Crescent in Killamarsh, Derbyshire, an outer suburb of Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Three children and one adult were found dead inside the property, with the incident being treated as a suspected mass murder. On 22 September 2021, 31-year-old Damien Bendall of Killamarsh was charged with four counts of murder and later rape of a girl under 13 in connection with the incident.He admitted all charges and was sentenced by Mr Justice Sweeney to a whole-life prison term on 21 December 2022.

Killamarsh is a village and civil parish in North East Derbyshire, England, bordering Rotherham to the north and Sheffield to the north-west. Killamarsh is surrounded by, in a clockwise direction from the north, Rother Valley Country Park, the village of Wales, South Yorkshire, Kiveton, Woodall, Harthill, Barlborough, Spinkhill, Renishaw, Eckington, and the (former Derbyshire) Sheffield suburbs of Oxclose, Halfway and Holbrook. The name 'Killamarsh' is first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it appears as Chinewoldemaresc. It appears as Kinewaldesmers in the Charter Roll for 1249. The name means 'Cynewald's marsh'.

The Rother Valley Country Park is a country park in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, close to Rotherham's border with Sheffield and Derbyshire. It covers 3 square kilometres (740 acres), has four artificial lakes, recreational activities and nature reserves. The majority of the park is on land that was open cast for coal, with the main excavation sites filled by the artificial lakes.

Eckington mine was a drift mine situated on the eastern edge of the township of Eckington, Derbyshire, England, 7 miles (11 km) South-West of Sheffield. As of 2011, it was the only colliery in production in North East Derbyshire. The mine was operated by Eckington Colliery Partnership during whose ownership it produced 25,739 metric tons (25,739,000 kg). In the 12 months leading to March 2007, the workforce was 26. The mine subsequently passed under the ownership of Moorside Mining Co. Ltd.

Immaculate Conception Church is a Roman Catholic Parish church in Spinkhill, Derbyshire, England. It was built in 1846 and designed by Joseph Hansom. It is situated on Spinkhill Lane opposite Immaculate Conception Catholic Primary School south of Mount St Mary's College in the village. It was founded by the Jesuits and is a Grade II listed building.

Mount St Mary's College is an independent, co-educational, day and boarding school situated at Spinkhill, Derbyshire, England. It was founded in 1842 by the Society of Jesus (better known as the Jesuits), and has buildings designed by notable architects such as Joseph Hansom, Henry Clutter and Adrian Gilbert Scott. The school is a member of the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference and the Catholic Independent Schools Conference. Its affiliated preparatory school is Barlborough Hall School, just 2.2 miles down the road.

Westfield School, is a mixed secondary school located in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. On 1 December 2018 it joined Chorus Education Trust, a local multi-academy trust founded by Silverdale School in Sheffield. The school was a specialist Sports College but removed this title from the name in June 2013. Spinkhill is a small village in North East Derbyshire, England. It is approximately one mile south of the nearest town, Killamarsh, and half a mile north-east of Renishaw. It is home to the Church of the Immaculate Conception and its associated Catholic Primary School. Spinkhill is also home to Mount St Mary's College, a large private school. The village has historical links to the Roman Catholic Church via the Poles family. The village has a pub and a cafe. Other economic activity comes from the several farms situated around the village. The village has a small bus station and is served by a handful of bus services to Sheffield and Chesterfield via Killamarsh and Renishaw, respectively. Spinkhill railway station served the village prior to its permanent closure in 1958.
