It is the local authority ward of Barrow Hill and New Whittington, which in 2011 had a population of 5,903.

The Harry Needle Railroad Company (HNRC) is a railway spot-hire company, based at Barrow Hill Engine Shed in Derbyshire. Prior to 2010 the company also recovered valuable spares from scrapped railway vehicles, either on the vehicle owners site, or at the European Metal Recycling scrapyard in Kingsbury. HNRC was established in 1998. It adopted an orange livery. In 2002 it introduced a yellow, white and black livery.In 2019, HNRC purchased DB Cargo UK's Worksop depot. As at October 2019, this was being used to store withdrawn InterCity 225s and Class 345s awaiting the opening of the Elizabeth line.

Brimington is a large village and civil parish in the Borough of Chesterfield in Derbyshire, England. The population of the parish taken at the 2011 census was 8,788. The town of Staveley is to the east, and Hollingwood is nearby. The parish includes Brimington Common along the Calow Road, and New Brimington, a late 19th-century extension towards the Staveley Iron Works.

Inkersall and Inkersall Green (informally referred to by local residents as Inky) are areas of settlement in Derbyshire, England. They are located south of the A619 road, 4 miles (6 km) east of Chesterfield and close to Junction 29a of the M1 Motorway. Inkersall is a town just outside Staveley, which has seen fast development over the last few years. Recent developments include the creation of a small children's park along with the building of an additional convenience shop. Inkersall has two public houses, the Hop Flower and the Double Top. The village is served by a regular bus service, allowing residents to travel to Staveley, Chesterfield and elsewhere. The Trans Pennine Trail passes alongside the village.
