Temple Place Historic District

Mantra was a French–Indian Fusion cuisine restaurant located in Temple Place of the Ladder District of Boston, Massachusetts designed by Monica Ponce de Leon and Nader Tehrani. It was cited as a factor in the transformation of the Ladder District into a more appealing part of the city of Boston. The restaurant featured an avant-garde style design. The food served was compared to Nouvelle cuisine. The restaurant also featured a hookah bar. They began selling high-end Voss bottled water after opening in 2001. Voss was a new brand at that time and Mantra offered it in part to draw attention to their unusual selections.The dining room was located in what was previously the lobby of a bank. The restaurant retained some aspects of the bank's decor with a high ceiling and a marble bar. The restaurant's restrooms drew attention due to their unconventional design. The stalls used One-way mirrors as doors and the urinals were located in the center of the room and were filled with ice.Although it was initially slated to open in January 2001, Mantra did not open until June of that year. It initially featured an Indian chef who had worked in French, Mediterranean and Indian style restaurants. The owners of Mantra had previously owned several traditional style Indian restaurants in Boston.In April 2012, parent company One World Cuisine announced that it would be closing Mantra, along with the company's flagship restaurant Café of India in Harvard Square. In July 2013, the property was sold at foreclosure auction for $1.7 million to Amir Youshaei, owner of Paz Jewelry.

R. H. Stearns & Company, or Stearns, as it was commonly called, was an upper-middle market department store based in Boston, Massachusetts, founded by R. H. Stearns in 1847. The flagship store—from 1909, the R. H. Stearns Building—was located on Tremont Street, opposite Boston Common, a few blocks away from its primary competitors on Washington Street, Filene's and Jordan Marsh. R. H. Stearns carved out a niche as being more service-oriented than its competitors, and it was considered by many to be the "carriage trade" store of the Boston area. By the mid-1970s the changing face of the retail marketplace caught up with the store, and it did not have the financial backing like Filene's or Jordan Marsh, who were both owned by large national retail holding companies. At the time of Stearns's demise Filene's was owned by Federated Department Stores, and Jordan Marsh was owned by Allied Stores.

Locke-Ober (c. 1875–2012) was the fourth-oldest restaurant in Boston, Massachusetts, after the Union Oyster House (1826), Durgin-Park (1827), and the Jacob Wirth Restaurant (1868). Locke-Ober featured French cuisine and seafood.

The West Street District is a historic district on West Street in Boston, Massachusetts, one of the city's "ladder districts" that runs between Tremont Street and Washington Street in the Downtown Crossing commercial/retail area. The district includes four buildings located near the corner of Tremont and West Streets, all built in the early 20th century. The two buildings at 148-150 Tremont Street were once occupied by Chandler and Company, an exclusive department store. Number 148 is a Renaissance Revival structure built as an office building in 1912, and number 150 was built in 1903 to house the Oliver Ditson Company, a music publisher. The Fabyan building at 26-30 West Street was designed by Coolidge, Shepley, Bulfinch & Abbott, and built in 1926. The Schraffts Building at 16-24 West Street was built in 1922, and housed a flagship candy store and restaurant for more than fifty years.The West Street District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Amory Hall (c. 1834 – c. 1888) was located on the corner of Washington Street and West Street in Boston, Massachusetts, in the 19th century. Myriad activities took place in the rental hall, including sermons; lectures by Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Lloyd Garrison; political meetings; exhibitions by Rembrandt Peale, George Catlin, John Banvard; moving panoramas; magic shows; concerts; and curiosities such as the "Nova Scotia Giant Boy." Through the years, tenants included: First Free Congregational Church (c. 1836); Grace Church (1836); artists Eastman Johnson, J.C. King, N. Southworth, T.T. Spear, William S. Tiffany (c.1847); Oliver Stearns, retailer of artists' supplies (1849–1850); artists J.A. Codman, A. Ransom, and R.M. Staigg (c.1852).In 1888, the hall was acquired by retailer William H. Zinn and incorporated into his "Connected Stores" occupying the block bounded by West and Washington Streets and Temple Place.

The Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts is one of the nine original dioceses of the Episcopal Church in the United States of America.

The Cathedral Church of St. Paul, Boston is the historic cathedral church of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts. Located at 138 Tremont Street near Downtown Crossing, directly across from Boston Common and Park Street Station, the cathedral is adjacent to the diocesan offices. The acting dean of the cathedral was the Rev. Nancy Gossling, following the retirement of the Rev. Jep Streit in February 2017. On April 22, 2018, Amy E McCreath was named the ninth dean and first female dean of the Cathedral Church of St Paul, and was installed as dean on September 29, 2018. The church, designed by Alexander Parris and Solomon Willard and built in 1819, was the first Greek Revival church in New England, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970 for its architectural significance.

The R. H. Stearns Building is an 11-story residence building (with shops at ground level) at 140 Tremont Street in Boston. It was built in 1909 for the businessman R. H. Stearns and his company and was the home of the R. H. Stearns and Company department store until the company's demise in 1978. The Stearns store had been in many locations in Boston before finally settling in its new building and headquarters at 140 Tremont Street.Since 1886 Stearns & Co. occupied and leased a re-modeled building on the site of the old Boston Masonic Temple, until it was completely torn down and the new R. H. Stearns building put up in 1908.R. H. Stearns & Company ceased operations in 1978, and the building was converted to 140 studio and one-bedroom apartments for older adults and people with disabilities. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places as R. H. Stearns House in 1980.

Washington Gardens (1814 – ca.1829) was a place of public entertainment and refreshment in early 19th-century Boston, Massachusetts. Also known as Vauxhall, it specialized in fireworks, circuses, musical and theatrical performances, pictorial exhibitions, and the occasional balloonist and necromancer. John H. Schaffer oversaw the enterprise beginning in 1814.

The Blake and Amory Building is a historic commercial building at the corner of Temple Place and Washington Street in Downtown Crossing, historically the main shopping district of Boston, Massachusetts. The eleven-story building was designed by noted Boston architect Arthur Hunnewell Bowditch, and constructed in two phases between 1904 and 1908. The building is architecturally noted for its expanses of windows and Gothic details. Early tenants occupying its upper-level offices were predominantly associated with the garment and fabric trade, with the lower floors housing a variety of retail operations.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. After an extensive renovation project, the Godfrey Hotel Boston opened in the historic Blake and Amory Building in 2016.

C. Crawford Hollidge was a women's clothing store of Boston in the 20th century. The business was started by Clarence Crawford Hollidge in 1909, as a dry goods store in Milton, Massachusetts just south of Boston. By 1930 he had transformed the store into a high-end women’s apparel and accessories store.At its height, C. Crawford Hollidge had four locations in wealthy towns in eastern Massachusetts: Boston, Wellesley, Cohasset on the South Shore, and Hyannis, a Cape Cod resort town.The flagship downtown Boston store was located at 141 Tremont Street at Temple Place, directly across Temple Place from rival R. H. Stearns. The architects were Fehmer & Page. On February 18, 1967 the building was engulfed by a five alarm fire. It was a total loss and had to be demolished. Crawford Hollidge reopened on Boylston Street, but closed within a few years, and its branch stores also eventually closed.
