Upton Magna

Upton Magna railway station was a station in Upton Magna, Shropshire, England. The station was opened on 1 June 1849 by the Shrewsbury and Wellington Joint Railway, which was run jointly by the London and North Western Railway and the Great Western Railway (who had leased/acquired the companies that had previously built the lines from Stafford to Wellington and Shrewsbury to Wolverhampton respectively). Initially the station had no platforms at track level, nor any buildings on the westbound side - these were subsequently added later. Goods sidings, a loop and a signal box were provided on the southbound side of the line by 1895. Passenger trains from the station ran to Shrewsbury westbound and to either Wolverhampton Low Level or Birmingham Snow Hill (GWR) eastbound prior to nationalisation in 1948. The station closed to goods traffic on 4 May 1964 and completely a few months later on 7 September. The buildings and platforms were swiftly demolished and the sidings removed, though the goods loop and signal box survived until May 1967. The station house still stands some distance from the lineside in 2016 (now in private residential use), but all other traces of the station have disappeared.

Haughmond Hill is a small, shallow hill in the English county of Shropshire. It is covered by woodland for the most part, although there is an open cast quarry (for stone aggregates) in use. Its proximity to the town of Shrewsbury has meant that it has become something of a forest park, with guided paths, car parking and picnic areas maintained in places. The rocky summit overlooks countryside and Shrewsbury itself. Haughmond Hill is made up of ancient turbidite sediments from the late Precambrian era which once cascaded off the edge of a continent into the ocean that surrounded it. The villages of Uffington and Upton Magna lie below and the B5062, Shrewsbury to Newport, road runs through the northern half of the woodland. Deer can be found in the woods, which are mixed deciduous/coniferous and are to some extent used for forestry to this day. The hill has several dubious connections with the Battle of Shrewsbury in 1403. Queen Eleanor's Bower is a small enclosure on the hill from which the wife of Henry IV of England supposedly watched the battle's progress (although neither of his wives were named Eleanor). Finally, the "bosky hill" mentioned in Act V Scene i of Shakespeare's Henry IV part 1 is almost certainly Haughmond, which looms to the east of the battlefield: How bloodily the sun begins to peerAbove yon bosky hill?The day looks paleAt his distemperature. Also nearby is Haughmond Abbey, now a ruin, and Ebury Hill, a prehistoric fort. The summit has the ruins of Haughmond Castle, a folly originally built about 1780 that collapsed in 1931.

Attingham Park is an English country house and estate in Shropshire. Located near the village of Atcham, on the B4380 Shrewsbury to Wellington road. It is owned by the National Trust and is a Grade I listed building. Attingham Park was built in 1785 for Noel Hill, 1st Baron Berwick, replacing a house on the site called Tern Hall. With money he inherited, along with his title, he commissioned the architect George Steuart to design a new and grander house to be built around the original hall. The new country house encapsulated the old property entirely, and once completed it was given the new name 'Attingham Hall'. The Estate comprises roughly 4,000 acres (1,600 ha), and the extensive 640 acres (260 ha) of parkland and gardens of Attingham have a Grade II* Listed status. Over 560,000 people visited in 2022/23, placing it as the most popular National Trust property.Across the parkland there are five Grade II* listed buildings, including the stable block, the Tern Lodge toll house which can be seen on the B4380, and two bridges that span the River Tern. There are also 12 Grade II listed structures including the retaining walls of the estate, the bee house, the ice house, the walled garden, the ha-ha, which can be seen in the front of the mansion, and the Home Farm.

Royal Air Force Atcham, or more simply RAF Atcham, is a former Royal Air Force station located 5 miles (8 km) east of Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, on the north eastern boundary of Attingham Park. Initially built for RAF Fighter Command, during the Second World War its primary use was by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) Eighth Air Force. It was mainly the home of the 495th Fighter Training Group, where pilots were trained to fly Republic P-47 Thunderbolts although a few also were trained to fly twin-engined Lockheed P-38 Lightnings for both Eighth and Ninth Air Force units. Atcham continued to see use as a training base until it was returned to the RAF in March 1945.

The River Tern (also historically known as the Tearne) is a river in Shropshire, England. It rises north-east of Market Drayton in the north of the county. The source of the Tern is considered to be the lake in the grounds of Maer Hall, Staffordshire. From here it flows for about 30 miles (48 km), being fed by the River Meese and the River Roden, until it joins the River Severn near Attingham Park, Atcham. Extensive peat bog formerly existed, extending from Crudgington on the Tern as far as Newport. At Longdon-on-Tern, the Tern is spanned by the Longdon-on-Tern Aqueduct, the world's first large-scale cast iron navigable aqueduct (Benjamin Outram's 13 m cast iron Holmes Aqueduct pre-dated it by a month), designed by Thomas Telford to carry the Shrewsbury Canal. Although no longer connected to the canal network, The 62-yard (57 m) long structure still stands today, but is marooned in the middle of a field.

Haughmond Abbey (locally HOR-mənd) is a ruined, medieval, Augustinian monastery a few miles from Shrewsbury, England. It was probably founded in the early 12th century and was closely associated with the FitzAlan family, who became Earls of Arundel, and some of their wealthier vassals and allies. It was a substantial, successful and wealthy house for most of its four centuries, although evidence of abuses appeared before its dissolution in 1539. The buildings fell into disrepair and the church was largely destroyed, although the remains of some of the domestic buildings remain impressive. The site is now in the care of English Heritage and is open to the public throughout the year and free entry.

Withington is a village and parish in Shropshire, England. The parish is very small (both in area covered and population – 220 people) and is located on the Shropshire Council/Telford and Wrekin Council boundary.

Atcham is a village, ecclesiastical parish and civil parish in Shropshire, England. It lies on the B4380 (once the A5), 5 miles south-east of Shrewsbury. The River Severn flows round the village. To the south is the village of Cross Houses and to the north-west the hamlet of Emstrey.

The Mytton and Mermaid Hotel in the parish of Atcham, near Shrewsbury, England, is a Grade II listed building. It gained its protected status in 1952.Originally built as a house, and later used as an inn and hotel, the structure of the Mytton and Mermaid dates from the mid- to late-18th century and was probably altered in the late 19th century. It was known as The Talbot Arms until the early 19th century. After a period under the name of The Berwick Arms, it became a private home called Atcham House. Clough Williams-Ellis bought it in the early 1930s, converting it back into a hotel and giving it the name by which it is now known.

St Eata's Church is in the village of Atcham, Shropshire, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Shrewsbury, the archdeaconry of Salop, and the diocese of Lichfield. Its benefice is united with that of St Giles-with-Sutton, Shrewsbury. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. Its dedication to Eata of Hexham is unique.

Uffington () is a village and civil parish in the English county of Shropshire. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 234. It lies between Haughmond Hill and the River Severn, 3 miles east from the town centre of Shrewsbury, at grid reference SJ53151395. Uffington is home to a church and a pub, the Corbet Arms. The Shrewsbury to Newport Canal once ran through the village. Within the parish lie the grade I listed ruins of Haughmond Abbey.Highway engineer Sir Henry Maybury (1864-1943) was born in Uffington.The 1997 Grand National winner, Lord Gyllene was trained by Steve Brookshaw in the village.
