King's Head Mill

Battle is a town and civil parish in the district of Rother in East Sussex, England. It lies 50 miles (80 km) south-east of London, 27 miles (43 km) east of Brighton and 20 miles (32 km) east of Lewes. Hastings is to the south-east and Bexhill-on-Sea to the south. Battle is in the designated High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The parish population was 6,048 according to the 2001 census, increasing to 6,673 with the 2011 Census. Battle is near the site of, and named after, the Battle of Hastings, where William, Duke of Normandy, defeated King Harold II to become William I of England in 1066.

Battle Abbey is a partially ruined Benedictine abbey in Battle, East Sussex, England. The abbey was built on the site of the Battle of Hastings and dedicated to St Martin of Tours. It is a Scheduled Monument.The Grade I listed site is now operated by English Heritage as 1066 Battle of Hastings, Abbey and Battlefield, which includes the abbey buildings and ruins, a visitor centre with a film and exhibition about the battle, audio tours of the battlefield site, and the monks' gatehouse with recovered artefacts. The visitor centre includes a children's discovery room and a café, and there is an outdoor-themed playground. The triple light window depicting the life of St John and the crucifixion of Jesus is claimed to have once adorned Battle Abbey which dates from 1045, removed during the Cromwell era to protect it from destruction. The legend goes that it was hidden for many years until it was transported to Tasmania to be fitted to the eastern end of the Buckland Church.

Battle Abbey School is a private coeducational day and boarding school in the small town of Battle, East Sussex, England. The senior school occupies part of the town's ruined abbey complex, and it is from here that the school derives its name. Originally formed as St. Etheldreda's, in 1989 Glengorse and Hydneye was merged into the school.

The Battle of Hastings reenactment is a yearly reenactment of the Battle of Hastings, held at Battle Abbey in Battle, East Sussex, UK, and drawing participants from around the world. It takes place every year on the weekend nearest 14 October on the site of the historical battle, although it is often arranged across the hill rather than up it, to take account of the smaller number of participants and the need for spectators. The event is run by English Heritage, which owns the site, and attended by several thousand people yearly. For many years it was an event for amateur groups of reenactors, but more recently has involved scenes by professional actors. Every five or six years since 1984 it has been the site of major reenactments. At the 2000 reenactment, called "Hastings 2000", about 1000 reenactors on foot, 100 cavalry and between 50 and 100 archers from 16 different countries took part. The two-day Hastings 2006 event saw more than 3,000 re-enactors performing for a crowd of about 30,000 paying public. It was believed to have been the largest pre-gunpowder reenactment event ever held.

Senlac Hill or Senlac Ridge is generally accepted as the location in which Harold Godwinson deployed his army for the Battle of Hastings on 14 October 1066. It is located near what is now the town of Battle, East Sussex. The name Senlac was popularised by the Victorian historian E. A. Freeman, based solely on a description of the battle by the Anglo-Norman chronicler Orderic Vitalis. Freeman went on to suggest that the Normans nicknamed the area Blood lake as a pun on the English Sand lake. It is probable that Orderic would have known the English name for Senlac, as he spent his early life in England since he had been born to an English mother. His education, towards the end of his time in England, was from an English monk. However, Freeman's hypothesis has been criticised by other historians since it relies purely on the evidence from Orderic Vitalis. Orderic was born nine years after the Battle of Hastings, and earlier chroniclers did not use the name Senlac.

Battle railway station is on the Hastings line in the south of England and serves the town of Battle, East Sussex. It is 55 miles 46 chains (89.4 km) down the line from London Charing Cross . The station and all trains serving it are operated by Southeastern. It was opened on 1 January 1852. The station building was designed by William Tress, is Grade II listed and considered to be one of the finest Gothic-style small stations in the country. Battle station consists of two platforms linked by a footbridge (with steps on both sides) and a station building housing a ticket office and waiting room. Train information is provided in the form of automated announcements, displays and poster timetables. All the original sidings have now gone and now form part of the car park. The platforms are staggered and originally did not overlap as they do now, but were extended to cater for eight-carriage trains before the 1986 electrification of the line by British Rail.

Claverham Community College is a comprehensive secondary school/community college in Battle, East Sussex, England. It has sports facilities such as a climbing wall, Community Sports Hall, gym, dance studio, fitness suite, and playing fields. Claverham Community College is a mixed comprehensive school for pupils aged 11–16 and a Community College. It has approximately 1150 pupils and about 2500 associates of the College who attend adult evening classes or are members of affiliated societies.The Community College was established in 1973 and was developed from the former Battle County Secondary School built in 1955. In school terms the College became fully comprehensive in 1976.

Mountfield Halt (TQ 746 197 50°57′01″N 0°29′12″E) was situated on the Hastings Line between Robertsbridge and Battle. It opened in 1923 and was closed on 6 October 1969. Both platforms were built of sleepers. The station stood just east of Battle Road (A2100) level crossing.There are no remains of the halt today.

Whatlington is a village and civil parish in the Rother district of East Sussex, England. The village is seven miles (11 km) north of Hastings, just off the A21 road. The village is in two parts, one in the valley on the road from Battle, where the church and the parish hall lie on either side of the stream, and one a mile or so further on the main A21 to Hastings, with a triangular village green in front of the Royal Oak pub and restaurant. The Norman parish church is dedicated to St Mary Magdalene; the yew tree which stood there until 1987 was traditionally thought to be one thousand years old, and to have been used by William the Conqueror to hang members of King Harold's personal guard. Malcolm Muggeridge lived with his family in Whatlington; both he and his wife are buried in the churchyard. On the main road a now disused chapel serves as a commercial business.The early feminist Barbara Bodichon was born here in 1827.

Fore Wood is a 20.9-hectare (52-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north-west of Hastings in East Sussex. It is part of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds nature reserve of the same name.The woodland in this steep valley is variable and it has been considerably modified in some areas. Flora include hay-scented buckler-fern, greater wood-rush and hard fern, as well as three rare mosses. There is also a rich community of breeding birds.

Blackhorse Quarry is a 0.2-hectare (0.49-acre) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest south-east of Battle in East Sussex. It is a Geological Conservation Review site.This is the Type locality for the Wadhurst Clay Formation Telham Bond Bed, which dates to the Early Cretaceous and is part of the Wealden Group. It has yielded many fossils, including turtles, crocodiles, pterosaurs and dinosaurs.The site is private land with no public access.

Crowhurst is an isolated village situated five miles (8 km) north-west of Hastings in East Sussex. It has a parish council and is located within the Rother District Council.
