Langwith-Whaley Thorns railway station is in Derbyshire, England. The station is on the Robin Hood Line 22¼ miles (36 km) north of Nottingham towards Worksop. This station serves the villages of Nether Langwith and Whaley Thorns which are both on the boundary of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. It also serves the village of Langwith in Derbyshire. The Robin Hood Line was opened to reinstate a Nottingham to Worksop service, which ran from 1875 until it was withdrawn in October 1964. After withdrawal the station at Langwith was razed to the ground. When the Robin Hood service was being planned it was decided that, rather than build a new station on the original site in Langwith Maltings, the community would be better served by building the new station about half a mile further North in the larger communities of Nether Langwith and Whaley Thorns. The "old" Langwith station is described at Langwith station (1875-1964).

Langwith is a close group of six villages crossing the Derbyshire-Nottinghamshire border, on the River Poulter about 2 miles (3.2 km) from Warsop, and about 4 miles (6.4 km) from Bolsover on the A632 road, south of Whaley Thorns. The population is listed under the Nottinghamshire civil parish of Nether Langwith. These consist of Langwith, Langwith Maltings, Nether Langwith, Upper Langwith, Langwith Bassett and Langwith Junction.

Creswell Model Village is an arts and crafts style model village in the village of Creswell, Derbyshire, England. The pit village was built in 1895 by the Bolsover Colliery Company to designs by architect Percy B. Houfton for the workers of Creswell Colliery on land leased from the Welbeck Estate. Influenced by garden village principles, it provided the workers with modern facilities; it had a tramway to deliver coal to the houses. Designed around a large oval village green with an access road through the centre, the houses are of varying styles. The Model as it is known, has been refurbished.The village is within the parish of Elmton-with-Creswell in the district of Bolsover in northeast Derbyshire.

According to Census data in 2001, Elmton with Creswell parish had a population of 4,755, and in 2011 had a population of 5,550. The town lies on the border with Nottinghamshire. In 1870–72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Elmton like this: ELMTON-WITH-CRESSWELL, a parish in the district of Worksop, and county of Derby; on the NE verge of the county, 5 miles E by S of Staveley r. station, and 8 ENE of Chesterfield. Post town, Clown, under Chesterfield. Acres, 2,970. Real property, £4,421. Pop., 469. Houses, 91. The property is divided among a few. Limestone is found. Elmton is a linear village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Elmton with Creswell in the Bolsover district of Derbyshire, England, approximately equidistant from Bolsover Castle and Creswell Crags. In 2011 the parish had a population of 5550. On 1 April 2014 the parish was abolished to form "Elmton with Creswell". However the pre 2014 parish had also sometimes been called "Elmton with Creswell".

Langwith Colliery railway station served the miners of the colliery in Whaley Thorns, Derbyshire, England, from 1894 to 1945 on the Mansfield to Worksop line.

Whaley Thorns is a former colliery village in the Bolsover district of Derbyshire, England, close to the Nottinghamshire border. Whaley Thorns lies just north of Nether Langwith and Langwith, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) south-east of Creswell, and west of Cuckney. It is in the civil parish of Scarcliffe. The village takes its name from a dense wood, recorded on the first Ordnance Survey Maps. "Whaley" being Celtic for water/spring, referring to both the local springs, just to the north, and the river Poulter which lies only 200 yards (180 m) to the south. And "Thorn" an Anglo-Saxon word, for wood. So the original meaning, may have been either "Wood of the Springs", or "Wood above/between the water(s)". In the Mid-nineteenth century, much of the wood was cut down, following the discovery of coal beneath it. Thanks to the nearby railway, the site soon grew into a colliery village. The village acquired both a fine Anglican Chapel, and a Methodist Chapel; both still hold regular services. It also acquired a large primary school, and later on in the 1940s, a fine Frank Lloyd Wright style school too. In the late 1970s the chief employer, the colliery, closed. Since the colliery closures, the first school has closed and re-opened as a heritage centre, as well as re-education centre for ex-miners. The Second has remained open as a primary school. Following the Pit (Colliery) closure, the villages' population has greatly reduced, due to the, lack of local employment, and the deprivation that happened as a result. Since 1990, many rows of terraced houses, have been demolished, due to their run-down, or in some cases derelict, nature. There are now just two shops, and one pub.

Nether Langwith is a village and civil parish, in the Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire, England. It is located 9 miles (14 km) east of Chesterfield and 8 miles (13 km) south west of Worksop. Nether Langwith lies east of the adjoining village, Langwith, which is in the district of Bolsover, Derbyshire, England. It is 527 hectares in size and lies on the banks of the River Poulter. The population at the 2011 census was 526.The local church is St Luke of Whaley Thorns, which was built in 1879 by J.B Mitchell-Withers. Whaley Thorns lies just north of Nether Langwith and 5 miles (8.0 km) of Bolsover. In 1924 it became a separate parish, but before then it was joined with the parish of Bolsover, of which St Mary's was the local church. St Luke's was a daughter church of St Mary's, of which there were three other daughter churches, St Winifred's in New Bolsover, St Peter's in Stanfree, St Laurence's at Shuttlewood. Of all of the daughter parish's, St Luke's is the only one to remain open. The village has two public houses, the Jug & Glass, on the Queens Walk at the centre of the village and the Gate Hotel, found on Main Road. The village has a coffee shop, named The Lemon Tree, located on Main Road – which has a very high customer rating. Lying just east of the village is Langwith Lodge, a fine pseudo Queen Anne style stately home, now a Nursing Home.

Shirebrook Academy (formerly Shirebrook School) is a coeducational secondary school with academy status, located in Shirebrook in the county of Derbyshire, and is part of the Aston Community Education Trust.Previously a community school administered by Derbyshire County Council, the school converted to academy status in September 2010 and was renamed Shirebrook Academy. An official opening occurred in November, 2010 with Lord Winston, then Chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University, as guest speaker, lecturing a class about DNA and taking questions from the student council.The school is sponsored by Sheffield Hallam University, but continues to coordinate with Derbyshire County Council for admissions. Shirebrook Academy relocated into a new building on Common Lane in April 2013.The building is shared with Stubbin Wood School, a special school for children ages 2 to 19 who have learning disabilities including those on the autistic spectrum, which moved in April 2013 from its previous location in Burlington Avenue, Langwith Junction, a part of Shirebrook. Prior to relocation where the newer facility is three times the size, the school had a full quota of 133, and had a waiting list. The Stubbin Wood Nursery is still based at Burlington Avenue.In 2014 the school joined a consortium with The Bolsover School, Heritage High School and Springwell Community College to form 'Aspire Sixth Form', a sixth form provision that operated across all the school sites. Aspire Sixth Form closed in 2016 due to low pupil numbers.Principal Mark Cottingham took over from Julie Bloor in 2015.Associate Principal Lindsey Burgin took over from Mark Cottingham in September 2022.Shirebrook Academy offers GCSEs and BTECs as programmes of study for pupils.
