Waterton, Lincolnshire

Garthorpe is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Garthorpe and Fockerby, in the North Lincolnshire district, in the ceremonial county of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated approximately 8 miles (13 km) south-east from Goole, 1 mile (1.6 km) west from the River Trent, and in the Isle of Axholme. Together with Fockerby, which is contiguous with the village, Garthorpe forms a civil parish of about 500 inhabitants, measured as 418 in the 2011 census.

Fockerby is a village in North Lincolnshire, England. It is situated approximately 8 miles (13 km) south-east from Goole and 1 mile (1.6 km) west from the River Trent. Fockerby is part of the Isle of Axholme and close to the border with the East Riding of Yorkshire. The village is in the civil parish of Garthorpe and Fockerby, and is contiguous with the village of Garthorpe to the north-east, with which it forms one community joined by a section of road which crosses the previous course of the River Don. In 1872 Fockerby was in Yorkshire, divided from Garthorpe by the "Old Don".By 1881 the village was a township in the parish of Adlingfleet in the West Riding of Yorkshire, and "on the west bank of the old Don River, which is now filled in and under cultivation". Lords of the manor and principal landowners were the Master and fellows of St Catharine's College, Cambridge. Chief crops grown were flax, potatoes, wheat and beans on an area of 910 acres (3.7 km2). Occupations at the time included a land surveyor, a tailor, a miller, and three farmers, one of whom was a landowner who lived at the Hall and employed a farm bailiff. Fockerby population in 1871 was 88.Fockerby was once served by Fockerby railway station the terminus of a branch line from Goole.

Fockerby railway station was a station in Fockerby, Lincolnshire. It served as the terminus of a branch of the Axholme Joint Railway. It is now closed.The station opened with the line on 10 August 1903, and closed with the end of passenger services on 17 July 1933.

Pauper’s Drain is a small tributary of the River Trent in North Lincolnshire, England, and is 9 km (6 miles) long.It has a catchment area of 42 square kilometres(16 square miles) of flat arable, agricultural land to the east of the Isle of Axholme. The start of the drain is the outflow of the Crowle sewage treatment works; from there it flows in an eastwardly direction, south of the village of Eastoft before it reaches the Paupers pumping station at the side of the tidal River Trent, to the north of Amcotts. The station contains three pumps, which are used to maintain water levels in the drain by discharging water into the Trent as required. A sluice adjacent to the pumping station, also allows water to discharge by gravity during periods of tidal low water.The watercourse is essential for the land drainage of this low-lying area, which is the responsibility of the Isle of Axholme & North Nottinghamshire Water Level Management Board, the successor body to the Isle of Axholme Internal Drainage Board. The Board undertakes maintenance tasks such as annual mowing and rodding of the drain.The name is thought to be derived from the fact that it was constructed by labourers on the poor rate (or paupers). It was also considered to have been constructed prior to the 17th century drainage works of Vermuyden in the area.

The village is situated 5 miles (8 km) north from Scunthorpe, and is near the east bank of the River Trent. The civil parish consists of Burton upon Stather and the hamlets of Normanby and Thealby; its population at 2001 was 2,737, increasing slightly to 2,753 at the 2011 census.

Adlingfleet is a drained, fertile, former marshland village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Twin Rivers, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is 6.5 miles (10.5 km) east-southeast of Goole town centre. Its sea wall along the far north-east is set back from the Ouse estuary leaving the largest single reedbed in England. In 1961 the parish had a population of 137.

Glanford Power Station is an electricity generating plant located on the Flixborough industrial estate near Scunthorpe in North Lincolnshire. It generates around 13.5 megawatts (MW) of electricity, which is enough to provide power to about 32,000 homes. It was designed to generate electricity by the burning of poultry litter, and was only the second of this kind of power station in the world to have been built when it went into operation in 1993. The station is owned by Energy Power Resources (EPR) and operated by its subsidiary Fibrogen.

The Flixborough disaster was an explosion at a chemical plant close to the village of Flixborough, North Lincolnshire, England, on 1 June 1974. It killed 28 and seriously injured 36 of the 72 people on site at the time. The casualty figures could have been much higher if the explosion had occurred on a weekday, when the main office area would have been occupied. A contemporary campaigner on process safety wrote "the shock waves rattled the confidence of every chemical engineer in the country".The disaster involved (and may well have been caused by) a hasty equipment modification. Although virtually all of the plant management personnel had chemical engineering qualifications, there was no on-site senior manager with mechanical engineering expertise. Mechanical engineering issues with the modification were overlooked by the managers who approved it, and the severity of potential consequences due to its failure were not taken into account. Flixborough led to a widespread public outcry over process safety. Together with the passage of the UK Health and Safety at Work Act in the same year, it led to (and is often quoted in justification of) a more systematic approach to process safety in UK process industries. UK government regulation of plant processing or storing large inventories of hazardous materials is currently under the Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations 1999 (COMAH). In Europe, the Flixborough disaster and the Seveso disaster in 1976 led to development of the Seveso Directive in 1982 (currently Directive 2012/18/EU issued in 2012).

The population of the civil parish of "Luddington with Haldenby" at the 2011 census was 419. It is 6 miles (10 km) north-west from Scunthorpe, 6 miles south-east from Goole and 18 miles (29 km) north-east from Doncaster.

Flixborough is a village and civil parish in North Lincolnshire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 1,664. It is situated near the River Trent, approximately 3 miles (5 km) north-west from Scunthorpe. The village is noted for the 1974 Flixborough disaster. Flixborough is in the Burton upon Stather and Winterton ward of North Lincolnshire Council, and its civil parish boundary covers the southern part of Normanby Park. Its Grade II listed Anglican church, part of the Burton upon Stather Group of churches, is dedicated to All Saints. The village public house is The Flixborough Inn on High Street.

Twin Rivers is a civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated along the south bank of the River Ouse to the east of the town of Goole, covering an area of 2,403.178 hectares (5,938.38 acres).The civil parish is formed by the villages of Adlingfleet and Whitgift and the hamlet of Ousefleet. The parish was part of the Goole Rural District in the West Riding of Yorkshire from 1894 to 1974, then in Boothferry district of Humberside until 1996.According to the 2011 UK census, Twin Rivers parish had a population of 367, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 357.
