Entrepreneurs imported silk worms and planted mulberry trees, but were not successful. No signs remain of the silk ambitions. Farmers in the area also cultivated cotton in the antebellum years, and used a local cotton gin that once stood at the Silk Hope crossroads. Due to soil limitations, they could not produce much of the commodity crop. Community residents come together each Labor Day to celebrate their heritage at the "Silk Hope Old Fashioned Farmers Day". Baldwin's Mill is a historic grist mill and national historic district located near Pittsboro, Chatham County, North Carolina. The district encompasses one contributing building and three contributing structures. The mill was probably built by 1807, is a 1 1/2- to 2+1⁄2-story, heavy timber-framed structure approximately 30 feet by 40 feet. Associated with the mill are the mill dam, and mill and tail races. The property also includes a stretch of roadbed dates to about 1820, a blacksmith's shop site (c. 1880), and two log cabins (c. 1830) moved to the property in 1975. The mill ceased operation in the late 1920s. It was restored to working order in 1941.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

The house was built about 1858, and is a two-story, three bay by two bay, Greek Revival style frame dwelling. It has a one-story rear ell and one-bay front porch, and sits on a stone foundation. The mill dates to 1885, and is a three-story frame structure on a stone foundation. It has an exterior iron mill wheel measuring 16 feet in diameter. The mill continued in operation until the 1930s. Also on the property are the contributing two-story frame smokehouse, foundation stones for the original detached kitchen and quarters, and archaeological remains.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Alston-DeGraffenried Plantation or Alston-DeGraffenried House is a historic property located in Chatham County, North Carolina, near Pittsboro, North Carolina. It includes a plantation house built through the forced labor of at least 11 enslaved people between about 1810 and 1825, and its surrounding agricultural fields. The property was first listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and the listed area was increased in 1993. The house and the surrounding land are identified as a national historic district. The district encompasses seven contributing buildings, two contributing sites, and one contributing structure. They include the main house, kitchen, pig boiling pit, four-seat privy, smokehouse, two-seat privy, corn crib, small barn, well shelter, and the surrounding landscape. The main house is a two-story, five-bay, Georgian/ Federal style dwelling. It sits on a raised brick basement and has a tall hipped roof. It has a full-width Victorian porch and a number of one-story rear additions.The house was built for Delia Alston by her father, Joseph John "Chatham Jack" Alston, at the time of Delia's marriage to John Baker DeGraffenried. It was one of six homes that Alston, one of the largest landowners and enslavers in the area, built for his children. He also built nearby Aspen Hall.
