Spacecraft Propulsion Research Facility

The Plum Brook Reactor was a NASA 60 megawatt water-cooled and moderated research nuclear reactor, located in Sandusky, Ohio, 50 mi west of the NASA Glenn Research Center (at that time the NASA Lewis Research Center) in Cleveland, of which it was organizationally a part. The reactor was originally planned for the NACA nuclear airplane project. After that was cancelled in 1961, it became the primary NASA facility for space-related nuclear energy research and development. Experimental efforts included scientific and technical investigations of nuclear energy for spaceflight propulsion, nuclear power systems, and radiation exposure. The station included several large test facilities besides the reactor, including liquid hydrogen facilities for development and testing of the Centaur upper stage. The reactor first went critical on 14 June 1961, and was finally shut down on 5 January 1973. The facility's decommissioning began in 1998, and the last of its structures was demolished in May 2012. The entire process ultimately cost $253 million, significantly more than the inflation-adjusted cost of constructing the facility.

Perkins Township is one of the nine townships of Erie County, Ohio, United States. It is part of the Sandusky, Ohio metropolitan statistical area. As of the 2020 census the population was 12,390.

Bogart is an unincorporated community in eastern Perkins Township, south of Sandusky, in Erie County, Ohio, United States. It is centered on the intersection of Bogart Road and U.S. Route 250, 1,500 feet south of the State Route 2 interchange with US 250. The center of Bogart is also 1,500 feet west of the boundary between Perkins and Huron townships. Bogart is pronounced locally boh-girt. It is part of the Sandusky Metropolitan Statistical Area. Prior to 1957, Bogart was a fairly quiet rural community. To the southwest, though, lay an unused tract of 9,000 acres (36 km2) that had been the site of a World War II munitions factory. In 1957 NASA acquired part of this tract for its Plum Brook Station and by 1963 had acquired the rest of the tract to build additional facilities there.Plum Brook Station brought unprecedented growth to Bogart in the form of single-family housing subdivisions, condominium apartments, motels, restaurants and other businesses. Kalahari Resort and Convention Center is located one mile south of Bogart on the east side of US 250. On December 21, 2007, Kalahari Sandusky completed a major expansion of its indoor waterpark and now bills itself "America's Largest Indoor Waterpark.

Bloomingville is an unincorporated community in northern Oxford Township, Erie County, Ohio, United States. It is part of the Sandusky Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bloomingville is located at the intersection of Mason Road and Patten Tract Road. The Oxford Grange Hall located where Taylor Road forks off from Mason was the center of community life for many years. The compact community consisted primarily of farmhouses clustered near the main intersection. Many of the farmhouses had working farms adjoining them or nearby. To the northeast lay an unused tract of 9,000 acres (36 km2) that had been the site of a World War II munitions factory. In 1957, NASA acquired part of this tract for its Plum Brook Station and by 1963 had acquired the rest of the tract to build additional facilities there.In 1984 a large golf course called Woussickett opened on Mason Road, west of Patten Tract Road. The Erie Sand Barrens State Nature Preserve is located 1.4 miles east-northeast of Bloomingville on Scheid Road just off Taylor Road. The Sand Barrens are a remnant of Lake Warren, a glacial predecessor of today's Lake Erie.

ColossalCon, formerly called Cleveland Colossal Convention, is an annual four-day anime convention held during May/June at the Kalahari Resort and Convention Center in Sandusky, Ohio.

Perkins High School is a public high school in Perkins Township, Ohio, near Sandusky. It is the only high school in the Perkins Local School District. They are known as the Pirates and school colors are black and white with an accent of red.

Sandusky South is an unincorporated community in Perkins Township, Erie County, Ohio, United States. The population was 6,599 at the 2000 census. It was not delineated as a CDP for the 2010 census. It is part of the Sandusky, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Sandusky Mall is an indoor shopping center located in Perkins Township, south of Sandusky, Ohio. It is located on the east side of US Route 250, north of I-80/I-90 (Ohio Turnpike) and Ohio State Route 2. It is the only major shopping center within 45 miles (72 km). It comprises more than 70 stores; the anchor stores are TJ Maxx, JCPenney, Books-A-Million, Dewey Furniture, Five Below, and Ross. JCPenney had previously operated a store in downtown Sandusky. It is managed by Cafaro Company of Niles, Ohio.

The Erie County Infirmary near Sandusky, Ohio, which has also been known as the Erie County Home, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built by George Phillip Feick. It is a large four-story Second Empire-style building made of local limestone.The building was described in 1999 as "an excellent example of the type of institutional structure erected in the latter half of the 19th century to provide for the less fortunate members of society". The county infirmary had been established in 1855 to serve the aged and indigent; this building was completed in 1886.It was listed on the National Register in 1975.

EHOVE Career Center is a public vocational school in Milan, Ohio. EHOVE is an acronym that stands for Erie Huron Ottawa Vocational Education. While Erie, Huron and Ottawa counties are the primary covered counties in the district, the school also serves students in nearby Lorain, Sandusky, and Seneca counties, as well as small parts of Ashland and Richland counties. Altogether the high school has an enrollment of 900 high school sophomore, junior and senior students from about 16 different associate school districts. Upon graduation, students earn a certificate from EHOVE, along with a high school diploma from their home high school.

Sandusky Speedway is a half-mile automobile race track located south of the city of Sandusky in Perkins Township, Erie County, Ohio, United States. The track features low banking in the turns and long straightaways. It has a layout similar to Martinsville Speedway. Plans for a half-mile dirt track in Sandusky were first drawn up in 1948 by Tommy Warren. In 1950 the Lake Erie Stock Coupe Racing Association (LESCRA) purchased the land and the first race was held on May 14 of that year. Richard Brickly of Willard, Ohio won the race in a 1932 Ford coupe and received $103 in prizemoney. The track was paved over in 1955 and a steel grandstand (replacing the old wooden stands) was added on the front straightaway, increasing the seating capacity from 3,500 to 5,000. The track was resurfaced in 2003. Sandusky Speedway closed at the end of the 1969 season when the Decker family, then the current owners, elected to shut down the facility. It lay dormant for all of 1970 until a lease agreement was reached allowing the facility to re-open the following year. It has operated continuously since.

Fairview Lanes is an unincorporated community in Perkins Township, Erie County, Ohio, United States. The area was delineated as a census-designated place (CDP) for the 2000 census, at which time its population was 1,015. The area was not a CDP for the 2010 census. It is part of the Sandusky, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area.
