Perkins High School (Erie County, Ohio)

Sandusky South is an unincorporated community in Perkins Township, Erie County, Ohio, United States. The population was 6,599 at the 2000 census. It was not delineated as a CDP for the 2010 census. It is part of the Sandusky, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Sandusky Speedway is a half-mile automobile race track located south of the city of Sandusky in Perkins Township, Erie County, Ohio, United States. The track features low banking in the turns and long straightaways. It has a layout similar to Martinsville Speedway. Plans for a half-mile dirt track in Sandusky were first drawn up in 1948 by Tommy Warren. In 1950 the Lake Erie Stock Coupe Racing Association (LESCRA) purchased the land and the first race was held on May 14 of that year. Richard Brickly of Willard, Ohio won the race in a 1932 Ford coupe and received $103 in prizemoney. The track was paved over in 1955 and a steel grandstand (replacing the old wooden stands) was added on the front straightaway, increasing the seating capacity from 3,500 to 5,000. The track was resurfaced in 2003. Sandusky Speedway closed at the end of the 1969 season when the Decker family, then the current owners, elected to shut down the facility. It lay dormant for all of 1970 until a lease agreement was reached allowing the facility to re-open the following year. It has operated continuously since.

The Erie County Infirmary near Sandusky, Ohio, which has also been known as the Erie County Home, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built by George Phillip Feick. It is a large four-story Second Empire-style building made of local limestone.The building was described in 1999 as "an excellent example of the type of institutional structure erected in the latter half of the 19th century to provide for the less fortunate members of society". The county infirmary had been established in 1855 to serve the aged and indigent; this building was completed in 1886.It was listed on the National Register in 1975.

Sandusky High School (SHS) is a secondary school in Sandusky, Ohio, United States. It is the only high school in the Sandusky City School District, and one of two high schools in the city of Sandusky; the other high school is St Mary Central Catholic High School. SHS was one of the first high schools established in the state of Ohio, with the first building commissioned in 1845. The first class - just four students - graduated in 1855. The facility is one of the largest secondary schools, under one roof, in the state of Ohio.

Perkins Township is one of the nine townships of Erie County, Ohio, United States. It is part of the Sandusky, Ohio metropolitan statistical area. As of the 2020 census the population was 12,390.

The Eleutheros Cooke House, also known as the Cooke-Dorn House, at 1415 Columbus Avenue in Sandusky, Ohio is a three-story, limestone Greek Revival style house that was built in 1844. It was the last home of Eleutheros Cooke, one of the first settlers in Sandusky and its first lawyer. Eleutheros was father of Jay Cooke, the Civil War financier.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.The house is owned by the Ohio Historical Society and is open seasonally as a historic house museum that has been restored to a 1950s appearance. It is managed locally by the Old House Guild of Sandusky.

The Taylor-Frohman House at 1315 Columbus Ave. in Sandusky, Ohio was built in 1906. It was built by George Feick. It includes Colonial Revival architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.The house is an "imposing" three-story building. It has a two-story front porch with four columns, two pilasters, and a pediment. The house also has a six-column portico. It was home of Sidney Frohman and Elnore (née Dauch) Frohman from about 1920 until Sidney's death in the 1960s. Sidney was president of the Hinde and Dauch Paper Company, which popularized use of corrugated cardboard in shipping, in lieu of barrels and bags.

Sandusky station is an Amtrak station in Sandusky, Ohio. Located at 1200 North Depot Street, the station consists of an uncovered platform on the north side of the east–west tracks, a small parking lot, and two buildings. The former Railway Express Agency/baggage building is boarded up, while the main building has a small, remodeled waiting room for Amtrak passengers as well as offices for the Sandusky Transit System and North Central EMS. The Sandusky station was originally built in 1892 by the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway. It was designed by architects Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge and was also a work of A. Feick & Bros., and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. In the heyday of passenger train travel in the first six decades of the 20th century the station was a local stop, bypassed by most New York Central named trains on the Chicago-New York City circuit. Exceptions were the Iroquois and the Chicagoan's eastbound trip. Additionally, the Cleveland-Detroit Cleveland Mercury made a stop at Sandusky. Passenger services ended in 1971, but were reinstated on July 29, 1979 when Amtrak added it as a stop on the Lake Shore Limited.The station is served by the Capitol Limited and Lake Shore Limited routes, both of which pass through Sandusky in the middle of the night. Because the station consists of only one platform, eastbound trains switch to the usual westbound tracks to pass the station.

The Plum Brook Reactor was a NASA 60 megawatt water-cooled and moderated research nuclear reactor, located in Sandusky, Ohio, 50 mi west of the NASA Glenn Research Center (at that time the NASA Lewis Research Center) in Cleveland, of which it was organizationally a part. The reactor was originally planned for the NACA nuclear airplane project. After that was cancelled in 1961, it became the primary NASA facility for space-related nuclear energy research and development. Experimental efforts included scientific and technical investigations of nuclear energy for spaceflight propulsion, nuclear power systems, and radiation exposure. The station included several large test facilities besides the reactor, including liquid hydrogen facilities for development and testing of the Centaur upper stage. The reactor first went critical on 14 June 1961, and was finally shut down on 5 January 1973. The facility's decommissioning began in 1998, and the last of its structures was demolished in May 2012. The entire process ultimately cost $253 million, significantly more than the inflation-adjusted cost of constructing the facility.

The Campbell School at 1215 Campbell St. in Sandusky, Ohio was built in 1885. It was designed by J.C. Johnson and built by Adam Feick and brothers. It has also been known as the Eighth Ward School. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.It was built to serve children with deficient eyesight. It is a two-story limestone building with an arched transom area above its main entrance, with Victorian Gothic style.

Sandusky Mall is an indoor shopping center located in Perkins Township, south of Sandusky, Ohio. It is located on the east side of US Route 250, north of I-80/I-90 (Ohio Turnpike) and Ohio State Route 2. It is the only major shopping center within 45 miles (72 km). It comprises more than 70 stores; the anchor stores are TJ Maxx, JCPenney, Books-A-Million, Dewey Furniture, Five Below, and Ross. JCPenney had previously operated a store in downtown Sandusky. It is managed by Cafaro Company of Niles, Ohio.

Firelands Regional Medical Center (formerly known as Firelands Community Hospital) is a 400+ bed not-for-profit medical center in Sandusky, Ohio, United States. The medical center had 9,678 admissions, 3,162 inpatient procedures, 7,704 outpatient surgeries, and its emergency department had 47,208 visits. Firelands Regional Medical Center is the only hospital in Erie County serving more than 10,000 inpatients and over 45,000 ER patients annually and is the largest year-round employer. The medical center is a level 3 trauma center and accredited by the American Osteopathic Association's Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program.
