Krimpenerwaard (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈkrɪmpənərˌʋaːrt]) is a municipality, a region and a former water board of the Netherlands. It is a rural area located in the east of the province of South Holland, just south of Gouda and east of the Rotterdam conurbation. It is bordered on the north by the river Hollandse IJssel, on the south by the river Lek and on the east by the stream Vlist.Krimpenerwaard obtains its name from the fact that "Krimp" used to mean a bend in a river and "Waard" is the Dutch word for an interfluvial area between the winter dikes of different river channels (in this case, the Lek and the Hollandse IJssel). There are other such waarden in this area. The Lopikerwaard lies to the east; the Zuidplaspolder to the west. The name Krimpenerwaard first appeared in the historical records in 944. The municipality is named after the region Krimpenerwaard and was formed by a merger of the municipalities of Nederlek, Ouderkerk, Vlist, Bergambacht and Schoonhoven on 1 January 2015.

Bovenkerk was part of the municipality of Vlist until 1 January 2015, when it was absorbed in the newly-formed municipality of Krimpenerwaard. It lies east of the town of Stolwijk, about 7 km (4.3 mi) southeast of Gouda.

Stein, South Holland

Stein is a small village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Krimpenerwaard, and lies about 5 km east of Gouda. The statistical area "Stein", which can also include the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 1060.Stein was a separate municipality between 1817 and 1870, known as Land van Stein, when it became part of Reeuwijk. The former municipality of Vrijhoef en Kalverbroek was added to Land van Stein in 1827. The part of the former municipality that lay north of the railway line from Gouda to Woerden still is part of that municipality; the southern part belonged to Haastrecht, and since 1985 to Vlist (till 2015).

In 2005, the town of Stolwijk had 4980 (2487 men en 2493 women) inhabitants. The built-up area of the town was 0.80 km², and contained 1367 residences. The statistical area "Stolwijk", which also can include the peripheral parts of the village, as well as the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 3660.Stolwijk was a separate municipality until 1985, when it became part of Vlist.

Haastrecht is a town on the Hollandse IJssel river in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Krimpenerwaard, and lies about 5 km east of Gouda. In 2001, the town of Haastrecht had 3302 inhabitants. The built-up area of the town was 0.58 km², and contained 1325 residences. The statistical area "Haastrecht", which also can include the peripheral parts of the village, as well as the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 2330.Haastrecht received city rights in 1396. It remained a separate municipality until 1985, when it became part of Vlist. The name is quite funny, because it sounds like "hast Recht", which means "you're right" in German.

Hekendorp

Hekendorp is a village in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is a part of the municipality of Oudewater, and lies about 6 km east of Gouda. Hekendorp was a separate municipality between 1817 and 1964, when it merged with Driebruggen. During this period, the area was part of the province South Holland.
