Claytor Lake

The Claytor Dam is a gravity dam on the New River in Pulaski County, Virginia, United States. It is also located about 2.5 mi (4.0 km) south of Radford. It is named after William Graham Claytor, then vice president of Appalachian Power Company (APC), who was instrumental in the dam's construction. APC is now a subsidiary of American Electric Power (AEP) who owns the dam. The primary purpose of the dam is hydroelectric power generation and it supports a 75 MW power station. Its reservoir, Claytor Lake, is also used for recreation. The dam was constructed and its power station commissioned in 1939. It received its first license in 1943. It is 1,142 ft (348 m) long and 145 ft (44 m) tall. It stores a reservoir with a capacity of 225,000 acre⋅ft (278,000,000 m3). The reservoir covers 4,472 acres (1,810 ha) and stretches 21.67 mi (34.87 km) behind the dam.

The Little River, a tributary of the New River, is approximately 65 miles long in southwest Virginia in the United States. It rises in two forks in Floyd County near the Blue Ridge Parkway. It flows NNW along the Floyd/Montgomery County line and then along the Pulaski/Montgomery County line and joins the New River just downstream from the Claytor Lake dam in Pulaski County near the city of Radford. The middle and lower portion of this very scenic waterway is suitable for paddling mostly in the spring or after heavy rains. There are several Class 1,2 rapids and two class 3 rapids and one fairly treacherous Class 4 rapid. Portions are stocked with trout by the Virginia Division of Game and Inland Fisheries.

Ingles Ferry (sometimes referred to as English Ferry) is the site of a historic ferry crossing on the New River in western Virginia, near the city of Radford in Pulaski County, Virginia, United States. A tavern was opened there in 1772 and the ferry served soldiers and civilians until 1948. A bridge was built at the site in 1842 but was burned during the civil war. The tavern and replicas of the 18th-century home of the Ingles family can be seen nearby.

John Grayson House is a historic home located near Graysontown, Montgomery County, Virginia. The house was built about 1850, and is a two-story, three-bay, frame dwelling with a single pile central passage plan. It has a two-story ell and a standing seam metal roof. Its front facade features a two-story pedimented porch containing a circular louvered vent in the gable. Also on the property is a tall frame smokehouse with a stone foundation and a pyramidal standing-seam metal roof.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Grayson–Gravely House is a historic home located near Graysontown, Montgomery County, Virginia. The house was built in 1891, and is a two-story, three-bay, frame Victorian dwelling with a central passage plan. It has a standing seam metal gable roof. It has a three-bay porch supported by Doric order columns and a three-stage tower with rooms on the first and third floors and a porch on the second, The porches feature a number of decorative elements including elaborate sawn balusters, a frieze with brackets, dentils, and tablets.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Dunkard's Bottom (sometimes written Dunkard Bottom, Dunkert Bottom, or Dunker Bottom, originally named Mahanaim) was a Schwarzenau Brethren religious community in the colony of Virginia in British America. It was established on the New River in the mid-1740s by brothers Samuel, Gabriel and Israel Eckerlin and Alexander Mack Jr. It flourished for only a few years until most of the settlers decided to return to Pennsylvania because living conditions at Dunkard's Bottom were too harsh. The Eckerlins sold their property in 1753 and moved to what is now West Virginia. The property changed hands several times until the construction of the Claytor Dam in 1939, which submerged the area of Dunkard's Bottom under Claytor Lake.

La Riviere, also known as the William Ingles House, is a historic home located at Radford, Virginia. It was built in 1892–1893 by Captain Billy Ingles, the great-grandson of Colonel William Ingles, and is a two-story Queen Anne house with a brick first story and a stuccoed frame second story. The house sits on rock-faced limestone blocks and has a slate-sheathed hipped roof. It features a three-story battlemented tower, a conservatory, and a curving wraparound porch. Also on the property are a contributing cook's house, garage, ice house, drive, and wall and gate.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

Graysontown is an unincorporated community in Montgomery County, Virginia, United States. Graysontown is located on the Little River 6.5 miles (10.5 km) south of Radford.

Graysontown Methodist Church is a historic Methodist church building located near Graysontown, Montgomery County, Virginia. It was built in 1895, and is a one-story, three-bay, nave plan frame structure clad in weatherboard. It has a two-stage central tower, with bracketed friezes and pyramidal roof.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Claytor Lake State Park is a 472-acre (191 ha) state park in Pulaski County, Virginia. The park is located on Claytor Lake, a 4,500-acre (18 km2), 21-mile-long (34 km) reservoir on the New River formed by Claytor Dam, which is used to generate hydroelectric power by the Appalachian Power Company. The reservoir is named for W. Graham Claytor (1886–1971) of nearby Roanoke, a former vice president of Appalachian Power who supervised construction of the dam and creation of the lake. Claytor Lake State Park has hiking trails, a freshwater swimming beach, boating and fishing opportunities, a full-service marina, visitor center, concession, lakeside cabins, camping with full hookups, interpretive programs and six rental shelters accommodating large groups. In addition to this, many housing projects have been created around the area due to the enticing lake-front properties. The Haven B. Howe House is used as a Nature Exhibit Center that focuses on the lake's wildlife habitat. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

Snowville Historic District is a national historic district located at Snowville, Pulaski County, Virginia. It encompasses 44 contributing buildings in the village of Snowville. It includes a variety of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings dated as early as the 1850s. Notable buildings include the Snowville Milling Complex (1856-1857), Elmore House, Snow-Bullard House, "Humility," Snowville school (1880s), Masonic temple (1865), Reese Blacksmith Shop, and the store and village post office. Located in the district is the separately listed Snowville Christian Church.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
