Anchor, Shropshire

Bryn Amlwg Castle (Welsh: Castell Bryn Amlwg, lit. 'castle on a prominent hill') was an enclosure castle near Anchor, Shropshire, abutting the England–Wales border. It is a scheduled monument, listed in 1930.This was an enclosure castle of the 12th and 13th centuries, and had towers and a gatehouse. Only earthworks now remain. In 1963 the site was excavated by archaeologists, determining that much of the original ringwork wall structure was composed of wood, and was later replaced largely with stone. The castle's adjacency to the England–Wales border and the former stone fortification shows its historical strategic significance as a border fortification. Its builder is unknown, but its resemblance to Dolforwyn Castle may suggest that Llywelyn ap Gruffudd erected the castle, perhaps in the late 1260s. Archaeological evidence of burning suggests the castle fell or was slighted during the war of 1276-77.The tripoint of Shropshire, Montgomeryshire and Radnorshire is very close by, located at the confluence of the Nant Rhydyfedw and the Nant Rhuddwr valley.

Garthmyl Hall is a Grade II listed house in Berriew, in the historic county of Montgomeryshire, now Powys. The house stood close to the site of a large 17th-century large timber-framed house. Garthmyl Hall was rebuilt in 1859 by the architect James K Colling for Major-General William George Gold.

Cilthriew is a Grade II listed house and former farm in Kerry, Powys, in the historic county of Montgomeryshire, now Powys. Cilthriew was used by the Papworth Trust which provided a range of high quality services for disabled and disadvantaged people. Cilthriew provided free short breaks for disabled people and their families in a farm surrounding.

The Cantlin Stone is a rough stone approximately two feet across with an inscription recording the death of one Willam Cantlin in the place where it is, and the fact that he was buried at Bettws. It is accompanied by a cross, and is located only twenty or so yards away from the Wales–England border.

The Mule (Welsh: Afon Miwl) is a short river in Powys, mid Wales, and a tributary of the River Severn. It rises at Black Gate near the west end of Kerry Hill and is joined by a number of streams, principal amongst which is the Nant Meheli, east of Kerry. Initially flowing northeast it turns to flow east at Kerry and then northwest, entering a narrow section of valley near Llanmerewig before joining the Severn at Abermule (Welsh: Aber-miwl meaning 'mouth of the Mule').

Glanmule (Welsh: Glan-miwl) is a small village in the north of Powys, Wales. It is located in Montgomeryshire, approximately 2.5 miles to the east of Newtown. It stands at the junction of the B4368 and A489 roads, two miles from the Welsh-English border. In the Middle Ages, Glanmule was the regional capital of the commote of Ceri. The village is named for its location on the Afon Miwl.

Kerry railway station was a station in Glanmule, Powys, Wales. The station was opened in July 1863, closed to passengers on 9 February 1931 and closed completely on 1 May 1956. The station was located a mile from Kerry within the fork of the Kerry and Sarn road (the A489) and the Abermule road (B4368) to the west of the Afon Miwl. The branch was single track and the station had a single platform located on the south side of the line. It was provided with an attractive cottage ornée building consisting of a two-storey station house and contiguous single-storey office range. The gables were adorned with pierced bargeboards. At the west end of the platform there was a turntable. The station also had goods facilities located on the north side of the branch, which included two sidings, a goods shed and a loading ramp. There was also an engine shed on east side of the site. Only the station building remains today. It is used as a private residence.

Bettws-y-Crwyn (Welsh: Betws-y-crwyn / Betwsycrowyn) is a small, remote village and civil parish in south-west Shropshire, England. It is close to the England–Wales border and is one of a number of English villages to have a Welsh language placename.

St Michael's Church is the parish church of Kerry, in the historic county of Montgomeryshire, now Powys. Kerry is sited about 3 miles to the S E of Newtown. which suggests that there may have been a church on the site since the 7th century. The church stands in an almost oval churchyard in the centre of the village. It was rebuilt and re-dedicated in 1176. Of the original church only the north aisle arcade survives, and the chancel arcade is 14th-century in date. The square stone tower is surmounted by a Montgomeryshire style timber-framed belfry. The main body of the church was rebuilt in 1882–83 by the architect George Edmund Street, paid for by James Walton of Dolforgan Hall.

Kerry (Welsh: Ceri) is a village and geographically large community in Montgomeryshire, Powys, Wales. The village lies on the A489 road 2.8 miles (4.5 km) southeast of Newtown and possesses two pubs — the Herbert Arms and the Kerry Lamb — a village hall, a bowling green, a post office, a primary school and a hairdresser. Kerry also has a parish church of Norman origins dedicated to St. Michael and All Angels, as well as a baptist church. It gives its name to the Kerry Hill breed of sheep.

The Kerry Tramway was a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge railway built in 1887 to serve the timber workings and slab quarry to the south of the village of Kerry, near Newtown in mid Wales.

Quabbs is a small, scattered hamlet in the southwest of Shropshire, near the border between England and Wales. The name, which also occurs in Gloucestershire as a field name, is possibly derived from the Old English word cwabba, "marsh".It is located in the rural civil parish of Bettws-y-Crwyn. The nearest village is Newcastle. Quabbs lies at 390m above sea level.
