Battle of Yibneh

The Battle of al-Uqhuwana (Arabic: يوم الأُقْحوَانة, romanized: Yawm al-Uqḥuwāna) was fought at a place east of Lake Tiberias in May 1029 between the Fatimid Caliphate under general Anushtakin al-Dizbari and a coalition of Syrian Arab Bedouin tribes. The Bedouin tribes were represented by the Tayy tribe of Palestine led by the Jarrahid emir Hassan ibn al-Mufarrij and the Kilab tribe of Aleppo under the Mirdasid emir Salih ibn Mirdas. The Fatimids were backed by one of the Bedouin coalition's former constituent tribes, the Kalb under the emir Rafi ibn Abi'l-Layl. The battle ended in the Fatimids' most decisive victory over the Bedouin tribes of Syria. Salih was slain and the Mirdasids' quickly lost several strategic towns, while Hassan and the Tayy long retreated from their traditional stomping grounds. Fatimid rule was consequently reasserted over Palestine and southern Syria, including Damascus, after years of Bedouin domination since 1024.

The Battle of Tawahin took place on 15 August 978 between the Fatimid army, led in person by Caliph al-Aziz, and the forces of Alptakin, the Turkic ruler of Damascus. The battle followed a series of back-and-forth operations by both sides for control of Palestine and southern Syria during the previous years, in which Fatimid forces had advanced from Egypt, only to be defeated and thrown back by varying combinations of regional rivals. At Tawahin, Alptakin defeated the Fatimid left, but al-Aziz managed to break through the Daylamites holding the Turk's centre and right, winning the battle, and with it control of Syria. Alptakin was captured but treated honorably, and his Turkic and Daylamite soldiery, who had proven their worth against the Kutama Berbers who until then composed the bulk of the Fatimid military, were taken into Fatimid service. Augmented with these forces, the Fatimids were able to expand their rule over Syria in the following decade and enter into a conflict with the Byzantine Empire. The battle thus marked the beginning of the eclipse of the Kutama as the mainstay of the Fatimid Caliphate.

Yibna (Arabic: يبنى; Jabneh or Jabneel in Biblical times; Jamnia in Roman times; Ibelin to the Crusaders), was a Palestinian village with a population of 5,420 in 1948, located 15 kilometers southwest of Ramla. Yibna was taken by Israeli forces on 4 June 1948, and was depopulated during the military assault and expulsion.

The mausoleum of Abu Hurayra, or Rabban Gamaliel's Tomb, is a maqam turned synagogue in Sanhedrin Park in Yavne, Rehovot Subdistrict, in the Central District of Israel, formerly belonging to the depopulated Palestinian village of Yibna. It has been described as "one of the finest domed mausoleums in Palestine." The mausoleum is located on a cemetery northwest of Yibna that residents have used for burial since at least the Roman period. Since the early 13th century, Muslims identified it as one of the purported burial places of Abu Hurairah, a companion of Muhammad. However, most Arabic sources give Medina as his resting place. The date of the inner tomb chamber is uncertain, with contemporary sources allowing the assumption that a tomb chamber existed at the site and was associated with Abu Hurairah already before Mamluk sultan Baybars's additions. In 1274, Baybars ordered the construction of the riwaq featuring a tripartite portal and six tiny domes together with a dedicatory inscription, with the site expanded further in 1292 by Sultan al-Ashraf Khalil. The tomb is known to Jews as the tomb of Gamaliel II, the first Nasi of the Sanhedrin after the fall of the Second Temple. A Hebrew travel guide dated to between 1266 and 1291 attributes the tomb to Gamaliel and describes it as being occupied by a Muslim prayer house. The site was frequently visited by Jewish medieval pilgrims. Following the 1948 Arab–Israeli War the mausoleum was officially designated as a shrine for Jews by Israel. In all likelihood, neither Rabban Gamaliel nor Abu Hurairah are buried in the tomb.

Yavne East railway station is one of two railway stations in Yavne, Israel. It is on the suburban line Binyamina/Netanya–Tel Aviv–Rehovot/Ashkelon. Yavne East was opened in 1992 and was fully rebuilt in 2009. Despite the name, the station is located south of the city of Yavne, near the entrance via Highway 42, and adjacent to an industrial area. Five local and intercity bus lines serve the station and the parking lot has 300 spaces. Yavne East station is located about 3 km south-west of the former Yibna railway station, which opened in 1920 as part of the Lod–Ashkelon railway, operated by Palestine Railways. The former station was located near the village of Al-Qubayba, presently within the moshav Ge'alya east of Yavne. The other railway station in Yavne, Yavne West, is located in the western part of the city and is situated on the new rail line from Tel Aviv to Ashdod via Rishon LeZion, adjacent to the Yavne Central Bus Station and was opened in 2012. Yavne East is one of only two train stations in Israel with only a single passenger platform (the other being the little-used Dimona railway station). As part of the double-tracking, upgrade and electrification works of the Rehovot–Pleshet section of the Lod–Ashkelon railway and a large housing and commercial development plan for the area, Yavne East station will be rebuilt in a different location on the railway sometime by the mid-2020s decade. The new station will have four passenger platforms located below ground level with the station building situated at ground level.

The Yibna Bridge is a Mamluk arch bridge near Yibna, which crosses the river Nahal Sorek (formerly known as Nahr Rubin, or Wadi al-Tahuna). It was previously used by Route 410 to Rehovot, and was known as the Jumping Bridge due to a bump in the middle of the bridge which caused cars to jump if speeding. It is now a part of a recreation ground, next to a new bridge carrying the Route 410.

Beit Gamliel (Hebrew: בֵּית גַּמְלִיאֵל, lit. House of Gamliel) is a religious moshav in central Israel. Located south-east of Yavne, it falls under the jurisdiction of Hevel Yavne Regional Council. In 2019, it had a population of 1,019.

Ben Zakai (Hebrew: בֶּן זַכַּאי) is a religious moshav in central Israel. Located in the Shephelah, it falls under the jurisdiction of Hevel Yavne Regional Council. In 2019 it had a population of 1,132.

Kfar HaNagid (Hebrew: כְּפַר הַנָּגִיד, lit. Village of the Prince), is a moshav in central Israel. Located in the coastal plain around 20 km south of Tel Aviv and north of Yavne, it falls under the jurisdiction of Gan Raveh Regional Council. In 2019 it had a population of 1,260.

On 2 August 2017, a 19-year old Palestinian teen critically injured an Israeli civilian with a knife at a local supermarket in the city of Yavne, located in the Central District of Israel. The attacker was subsequently arrested after being captured by civilians who were at the spot. Police confirmed the attack was an act of terrorism.The perpetrator was later identified as Ismail Abu Aram, resident of Yatta, Hebron, located in the West Bank.

Yavne (Hebrew: יַבְנֶה) or Yavneh is a city in the Central District of Israel. In many English translations of the Bible, it is known as Jabneh . During Greco-Roman times, it was known as Jamnia (Ancient Greek: Ἰαμνία Iamníā; Latin: Iamnia); to the Crusaders as Ibelin; and before 1948, as Yibna (Arabic: يبنى).

Bnaya (Hebrew: בְּנַיָה) is a moshav in central Israel. Located in the Shephelah near Ashdod, Gedera and Yavne, it falls under the jurisdiction of Brenner Regional Council. In 2019 it had a population of 798.
