Beaufront Castle

Sandhoe Hall, also once known as Sandhoe House, is a 19th-century country house situated at Sandhoe, Northumberland. It is a Grade II listed building. The Sandhoe estate was owned by the Errington family of nearby Beaufront, but when Henry Errington died childless in 1819, it passed to his great-grandnephew Rowland Stanley of Puddington Hall, Cheshire, son of Sir Thomas Stanley Bt (see Errington baronets). Stanley changed his name to Errington. He was High Sheriff of Northumberland in 1855 and became the 11th Errington Baronet in 1863. In 1850 he commissioned architect John Dobson to rebuild the old house. The south and east fronts are four-bayed with two storeys and alternately gabled attics. The northwest service wing incorporates some of the fabric of the original house. The house had another wing in the 19th century on the left when viewed from the front ( see old photo below ) its outline can be traced on the northwest service wing. It now forms part of a courtyard and stable house. Typically Victorian, its front is offset with a utilitarian design and layout to the northwest servants wing. The original house is described as being in the Elizabethan style with Dobson building chimneys with an Elizabethan height to them but in a Victorian style. It would be interesting to know what the original house looked like. The main entrance gate, built later than the house around 1870, is in a heavy rusticated style with fleur-de-lys cast-iron door furniture and ashlar dressings with Gothic touches- a motto "virtue" appears above the main gate, with pedestrian access gates adjacent. The grounds contain a monument in the form of a cross approximately four metres high. Points of interest in the house include heraldic stained-glass windows and drainpipes with stone carved lions heads above them. The grounds have terraced gardens on the slope the house is situated on, with a large fountain, a tennis court and an ice house.

Sandhoe is a hamlet and civil parish in Northumberland, England. It lies about 3 kilometres (2 mi) northwest of Corbridge and 3 kilometres south of Hadrian's Wall. The parish touches Acomb, Corbridge, Hexham and Wall.

Anick ( AY-nik) is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Sandhoe, in Northumberland, England, situated to the north of Hexham. In 1881 the parish had a population of 153. Anick should not be confused with Alnwick, pronounced ; a much larger town also in Northumberland, but some 35 miles (56 km) further north.

Devil's Water is a narrow, powerful river in Northumberland, England fed by many streams. A right-bank firmly north-flowing tributary of the Tyne, it ends at the north end of the rural township (estate) of Dilston along which Tyne bank boundary is a widening of the Tyne and longstanding bridge to Corbridge (the parish in which Dilston lies). It is formed from smaller burns and sikes between Embley and Hackford rising 3–6 miles (5–10 km) south and south-west of Hexham.Its tributaries include the Rowley Burn and West Dipton Burn, as suggested by the northward flow of the main stream, left-bank (rising in the west). Devil's Water figured large in the Battle of Hexham, 1464, a consolidatory, strategic win in the outlying presence of deposed king Henry VI of England between a large Yorkist army and small (pro-Henry) "Lancastrian" force.

Coria was a fort and town 2.5 miles (4.0 km) south of Hadrian's Wall, in the Roman province of Britannia on the junction of a major Roman north–south road (Dere Street) with the River Tyne and another Roman road (Stanegate), which ran east–west between Coria and Luguvalium (the modern Carlisle). Corbridge Roman Site is in the village of Corbridge in the county of Northumberland. It is in the guardianship of English Heritage and is partially exposed as a visitor attraction, including a site museum.

The Corbridge Lion, Northumberland, England, is an ancient Roman free-standing sandstone sculpture of a male lion standing on a prone animal (possibly a deer) on a semi-cylindrical coping stone base. Measuring 0.95m in length by 0.36m in width and 0.87m high, it was originally a piece of decorative funerary ornamentation from a tomb. It was subsequently re-used as a fountainhead by passing a water pipe through its mouth. It was found in a water tank in 1907 in excavations led by Leonard Woolley on Site II (a corridor building with tesselated floors, hypocausts, and painted wallplaster that has been suggested as a mansio or posting station) on the Roman site at Corbridge. It is believed to date to the 2nd or 3rd centuries AD.Woolley noted that it was found whilst he was at the bank in Corbridge collecting the workers' wages, and that when they revealed their discovery to him upon his return, the man who excavated it commented "when I first saw that there lion he had a blooming orange in 'is mouth!".At least four other stone lions have been found at Corbridge: two were excavated in association with the enclosure wall around a 2nd-century mausoleum at Shorden Brae, in the cemetery just west of the Roman town, one was found built into a wall in the village, and another (now lost) was in a private museum owned by Bartholomew Lumley during the early 19th century.The Corbridge Lion is now on display in the Corbridge Roman site museum run by English Heritage.

Dilston Castle is an unglazed 15th-century uninhabited tower house (and inactive Catholic chapel built for one family's services) at Dilston in the parish of Corbridge, Northumberland, England. Both are scheduled monuments and Grade I listed buildings giving them recognition for historic and architectural value as well protection from demolition. The three-storey tower was built by Sir William Claxton on the site of an earlier pele tower in the 15th century.

Cambian Dilston College is a private further education college for those with special educational needs. It is located at Dilston Hall in Corbridge in the English county of Northumberland. The remains of Dilston Castle stand in its grounds. Established in 1971, it was previously known as Mencap National College Dilston and was owned and operated by MENCAP. In June 2014 Mencap sold the college to Cambian Group PLC and the college was renamed Cambian Dilston College. Today the college provides further education for young people with learning disabilities, autism spectrum conditions and complex needs. The college offers day, short-break and outreach services, and up to 52-week residential placements for students.

Milecastle 24 (Wall Fell) was a milecastle of the Roman Hadrian's Wall. Its remains exist as a low platform, and are located to the south of the B6318 Military Road around 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) west of its junction with the A68.

Milecastle 23 (Stanley) was a milecastle of the Roman Hadrian's Wall. Its remains exist as a low, grass covered platform with traces of an external ditch (as Milecastle 25). It is located to the south of the B6318 Military Road around 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) west of its junction with the A68.

Hexham Bridge is a road bridge in Northumberland, England linking Hexham with the North Tyne valley. It lies north of the town of Hexham and is the main access to the A69 bypass.

Hexham is a railway station on the Tyne Valley Line, which runs between Newcastle and Carlisle via Hexham. The station, situated 22 miles 22 chains (22.3 mi; 35.8 km) west of Newcastle, serves the market town of Hexham in Northumberland, England. It is owned by Network Rail and managed by Northern Trains.
