Swift Creek Landslide

Sumas Mountain is a mountain located in Whatcom County, Washington, 15 miles northeast of Bellingham and southwest of Vedder Mountain. Located in the Skagit Range, the mountain is notable for its high biodiversity and year-round hiking trails. It is sometimes referred to as American Sumas to distinguish it from an identically named mountain across the Canada–United States border in British Columbia just 10 km (6.2 mi) to the north, both of which are drained by tributary creeks of the Sumas River. The mountain is largely owned by the Washington Department of Natural Resources, but some parcels are privately held. While the public land is open for recreation, it is managed primarily for timber harvest. Clearcuts are present on many slopes and most all the remaining forest is in varying stages of recovery and regrowth. Washington State Route 547, which traverses a low pass on the mountain's northern flank, runs northwest from the Mount Baker Highway, (SR 542) in Kendall to SR 9 in Sumas, which is located on the Canada–United States border and south of Abbotsford, British Columbia. The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad once traversed the same pass. The controversial Swift Creek Landslide is located on the mountain's western slope.

Nooksack ( NUUK-sak) is a city in Whatcom County, Washington, 8 km (5.0 mi) south of the border with Canada. The population was 1,338 at the 2010 census. Despite the name, it is actually located right next to the upper stream of the Sumas River, and is 2 km (1.2 mi) northeast of the nearest bank of the Nooksack River. Nooksack shares Nooksack Valley School District with the nearby Sumas and Everson. The town is just a handful of buildings built around the State Route 9 highway that runs through it, and contracts the police and sewer services through the adjacent City of Everson. The post office lost its official status in 1992 (now a department of neighboring Everson) and the USPS has since closed the remote office, but the building still exists across from a small city park. Other noticeable remains are the two filling stations and several churches. It has no major geographic features except two small creeks that drains into the Sumas River on the edge of town, near a cemetery containing many old graves.

Deming is a census-designated place (CDP) in Whatcom County, Washington, United States, along the Nooksack River. It is named for its first postmaster, George Deming. The community population was 353 at the 2010 census. Located about 16.3 miles from the county seat and major city of Bellingham, this small community is home to the tribal government offices of the federally recognized Nooksack Tribe and is situated within the tribe's 2500-acre Nooksack Indian Reservation. Deming and the nearby town of Van Zandt are served by their own local community radio station, KAVZ-LP which transmits with 100 watts from the Van Zandt Community Hall, and has a receiving radius of about 15 miles.

Nooksack Valley High School is a four-year public secondary school located in rural Whatcom County, just north of Nooksack. It is located just north of Nooksack, Washington, on E. Badger Road at the junction of State Route 9 and State Route 546. The school mascot is a Pioneer and the school colors are purple and white.

Cedarville is an unincorporated community in Whatcom County, in the U.S. state of Washington.The community took its name from the Cedarville Shingle Company.

Independence County was a proposed county to be created from the northwest corner of Whatcom County, Washington. The proposal had the most momentum in the county elections of 1993, when secessionist interests won a majority of votes on the County Council. The Independence County proposal, like other county secession proposals in Washington, was organized by construction and development interests (under the banner of property rights), hoping that a separate county would redefine county zoning and land use plans to encourage new development. Proponents of the new county took advantage of rural landowners' perception of tax flow: that property taxes had increased unreasonably in order to foot the bill for infrastructure development in the county seat of Bellingham, Washington. This assertion was bolstered by studies on three of Washington's county creation proposals (including Independence) undertaken by UW Professor Richard Zerbe, but refuted by Whatcom County Assessor Keith Wilnauer. In 1994 the Independence County movement was based in Deming, Washington, organized by Doug Howard, a preacher, retail landowner, and mortgage lender. The Independence movement had ties to the Wise Use Movement, and anti-environmental interest group. The Independence movement also had ties to other county secession movements in Washington including Freedom, Pioneer, and Skykomish county proposals. Petitions to propose that Independence County be created were circulated around the proposed area between 1993 and 1994. Many signatories believed that they were signing an initiative to be placed on an upcoming ballot, but it was only a petition to the legislature. After the Washington State Public Disclosure Commission secured a disclosure hearing into the lobbying actions and finances of the organized Cedar County, Washington movement, the Independence County organized movement (as well as those of other Washington county secession movements) shut down in 1994.

Sumas (SOO-mas) is a city in Whatcom County, Washington, United States. It had a population of 1,307 as of the 2010 census. Sumas is located adjacent to the Canada–U.S. border and borders the city of Abbotsford, British Columbia. The Sumas-Huntingdon port of entry at the north end of State Route 9 operates 24 hours a day. Sumas shares Nooksack Valley School District with the cities of Nooksack and Everson. It is the northernmost settlement on Washington State Route 9.

Huntingdon is a community within Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada. It is located immediately north of the Canada–US border, and is the location of the Sumas-Huntingdon Border Crossing. The main road through the community is Highway 11. The name of the community is also the present name of the border crossing connecting to Sumas, Washington. It is named for Collis P. Huntington, a Union Pacific Railroad railway executive who helped connect the Canadian Pacific Railway line to US Lines. The CPR wanted direct BC connection to Seattle, south, and onto California so it built a bridge at Mission and rail line across Matsqui Prairie to connect with the Seattle, Lake Shore and Eastern Railway. The Northern Pacific Railway, Union Pacific Railroad and Milwaukee Roads built lines to Sumas, with an eye of coming to Vancouver, but never crossed the border in the end. BC Electric Railway and Great Northern did build to Huntingdon and into the eastern Fraser Valley. Member of Parliament for Abbotsford, Ed Fast, is spearheading an effort to have the border crossing renamed to Abbotsford.

The Sumas–Huntingdon Border Crossing connects Sumas, Washington and Abbotsford, British Columbia on the Canada–US border. Washington State Route 9 on the American side joins British Columbia Highway 11 on the Canadian side.

Everson is a city in Whatcom County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,481 at the time of the 2010 census. Everson and the nearby city of Nooksack lie near the foothills of the Cascade mountains in Northwest Washington. Located on the banks of the Nooksack River, the businesses support the surrounding farms and logging industries. The valley is heavily influenced by Dutch settlers who established dairy farms on the fertile flood prone land. Fruit orchards and berry fields also play an important part of the town's economy. The town's small business district provides all the basic services. There are restaurants, a pharmacy and grocery store, an auto-repair shop, and agricultural supply stores. The city park is located a 1/2 block south off the W. Main St. and Riverside Park is on the banks of the Nooksack River. Throughout the year, the area hosts small festivals in town or in the surrounding area, including a summer festival and harvest festival.

Peaceful Valley is a census-designated place (CDP) in Whatcom County, Washington, United States, near Kendall. The population was 3,324 at the 2010 census.
