Portage Park (Chicago park)

The Portage Park Bungalow Historic District is a residential historic district in the Portage Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The district includes 225 buildings, 189 of which are brick Chicago bungalows built between 1915 and 1930. As homeownership became broadly accessible to Chicagoans in the early twentieth century, the bungalow emerged as a popular and affordable house design, and tens of thousands of the homes were built throughout Chicago. Portage Park was one of the many outlying neighborhoods of Chicago which grew dramatically as a result of the housing boom; new residents were also attracted to the neighborhood's eponymous park. While the district was developed by many different builders and architects, the use of a single home type with uniform setbacks from the street gives the neighborhood a consistent appearance.The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 17, 2014.

Jacqueline B. Vaughn Occupational High School is a public 4–year special education high school located in the Portage Park neighborhood on the north–west side of Chicago, Illinois, United States. Opened in 1968, The school is named for Chicago public schools special education teacher and Chicago Teachers Union president Jacqueline B. Vaughn (1935–1994). The school is a part of the Chicago Public Schools. The school serves students with disabilities in grade levels 9 through 12.

Luther High School North, formerly known as Luther North College Prep, was a private coeducational high school located in the Portage Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. It was affiliated with the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod. Its predecessor was Luther Institute, founded in 1909 as a Lutheran High School and located in the Near West Side neighborhood of Chicago. In 1953 the school moved to a campus in Portage Park, Chicago. Enrollment peaked at about 1,400 in the 1960s and 1970s, but declined thereafter. Due to financial difficulties, the Portage Park campus was sold to New Life Community Church in 2010, with the school sharing occupancy. In February 2017, with an enrollment of only 170 students despite recruiting efforts, the school announced that it would cease operations after the 2016–2017 school year.

Portage Park is located on the northwest side of the City of Chicago, Illinois and is one of 77 officially designated Chicago community areas. Portage Park is bordered by the community areas of Jefferson Park and Forest Glen to the north, Dunning and the suburb of Harwood Heights to the west, Irving Park to the east and Belmont-Cragin to the south. The area is notable for its Six Corners outdoor shopping district, centered at the intersection of Irving Park Road, Cicero Avenue and the diagonal Milwaukee Avenue, the Portage Theater and for its namesake - Portage Park. The name of the park was taken from the major portage linking the Des Plaines and Chicago rivers along what is today Irving Park Road. The area was so swampy that in wet weather, Native Americans and trappers were easily able to paddle through the area in either direction without leaving their canoes. In those days, the Des Plaines was perhaps the most significant way to the Illinois, and then on to the Mississippi (and to return). Portage Park has the largest Polish community in the Chicago Metropolitan Area according to the 2000 census. Portage Park is home to the Polish American Association, the Polish Jesuit Millennium Center, the Polish Army Veterans Association in the beautiful building of the former Irving State bank, in addition to the multitude of Polish shops and businesses throughout the district. One of the area's parks is named Chopin Park after Frédéric Chopin, Poland's most famous pianist and composer.

Chopin Park is an 8-acre (32,000 m2) park located at 3420 North Long in the Portage Park community area of North Side, Chicago, Illinois. The park stretches from Roscoe Street on the south to Cornelia Avenue to the north between Linder and Long avenues. The historic fieldhouse was designed by Albert A. Schwartz and contains an assembly hall with a stage and seven rooms, where many preschool and music classes take place. The park also offers a Park Kids after-school program that attracts local students. Chopin Park is named after Frédéric Chopin, Poland's most famous pianist and composer. Portage Park has the largest Polish community in the Chicago Metropolitan Area according to the 2000 census. The area is the center of one of Chicago's "Polish Patches", Władysławowo, and the park is right across the street from St. Ladislaus Roman Catholic Church. There are/were plans to erect a statue of Frédéric Chopin in Chopin Park for the 200th anniversary of Chopin's birth in 2010. There are also plans to erect, along Chicago's lakefront, a full-scale replica of Wacław Szymanowski's Chopin Statue in Warsaw's Royal Baths Park.

St. John of Rila in Chicago, referred to in Bulgarian as 'Tsurkva Sveti Ivan Rilski' is a historic church of the Orthodox Church of America located in Chicago, Illinois. It is considered to be one of the most aesthetically noteworthy churches in the Portage Park area of Chicago.

Jefferson Park is a 7-acre (2.8 ha) park in the eponymous community area of Chicago, Illinois on the National Register of Historic Places.

St. Ladislaus (Polish: Kościół Świętego Władysława) - historic church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago located in Chicago, Illinois. One of the many Polish churches on Chicago's Northwest Side, it is considered to be one of the more architecturally significant religious edifices in the Portage Park area, as well as one of the key agents in the neighborhood's historical growth and development.

The Copernicus Center (formerly Gateway Theatre) is a 1,890-seat former movie palace that is now part of the Copernicus Center in the Jefferson Park community area of Chicago in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The Copernicus Center is located at 5216 W. Lawrence Avenue. The former Gateway Theater was designed by architect Mason Rapp of the prestigious firm of Rapp and Rapp, famous for their design of deluxe theaters not only in Chicago (Chicago, Oriental, and Palace Theatres) but throughout the United States. It is the architect's only surviving atmospheric theatre in Chicago.

Jefferson Township is a former civil township in Cook County, Illinois, United States that existed as a separate municipality from 1850 until 1889 when it was annexed into the city of Chicago. Its borders were Devon Avenue on the north, Harlem Avenue on the west, Western Avenue to the east, and North Avenue to the south. This region comprised most of what is now known as the Chicago's Northwest Side including the entirety of the following community areas: Jefferson Park, North Park, Albany Park, Irving Park, Avondale, Hermosa, Belmont-Cragin, Montclare, Portage Park, as well as parts of Forest Glen, West Ridge, Lincoln Square, North Center, Logan Square, West Town, Humboldt Park, Austin, Dunning, the suburb of Norridge, the suburb of Harwood Heights, and Norwood Park. During its brief history it developed from unpopulated wildlife to a largely rural community with a number of suburban villages. However, due to infrastructure limitations, legislative incentives and the lure of better municipal services it, along with numerous adjoining townships, agreed to be annexed into the city of Chicago, creating the largest city in the United States at that time.

The Schorsch Irving Park Gardens Historic District is a residential historic district in the Dunning neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The district includes 255 buildings, all but three of which are Chicago bungalows. In the early twentieth century, tens of thousands of Chicago bungalows were built in the city; as homeownership became more accessible to working-class Chicagoans, demand for housing increased, and bungalows were an affordable way of meeting this demand due to their relatively uniform design. The bungalows in the district were largely built either between 1917 and 1918 or between 1922 and 1926. Unlike Chicago's other bungalow-dominated neighborhoods, which often had several different developers, developer Albert J. Schorsch built every bungalow in the district, and architech Ernest N. Braucher designed all of them. To add diversity to a neighborhood made up of only one style of house, the two men varied the homes' roof shapes, colors, and dormers.The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 25, 2004.

Jefferson Masonic Temple is a building completed in 1913 in Jefferson Park, it provides a meeting space for Masonic Lodges and appendant bodies in the 5th Northeastern District of the Grand Lodge Of Illinois: Paul Revere Lodge #998, Oriental Lodge #33, Hesperia #411, King Oscar Lodge #855, Kelvyn Park-Willing Lodge #1075 and Lux Lunae Lodge #1181.In 1913, the Wiley M. Providence Lodge formed the Jefferson Masonic Association and built their new temple. King Oscar Lodge now maintains the Jefferson Masonic Temple.
