West Barsham

Barsham is a civil parish in the English county of Norfolk, and includes the villages of East Barsham, North Barsham, West Barsham and Houghton St Giles. The villages are all situated within 2 miles of each other, about 3 miles north of the town of Fakenham and 28 miles north-west of the city of Norwich. The headwaters of the River Stiffkey flow through both East and North Barsham and Houghton St Giles.[1]Originally all four villages had their own parishes, but these were merged to create a single civil parish in 1935. This parish has an area of 7½ square miles and in the 2001 census had a population of 253 in 115 households, the population reducing to 232 at the 2011 census. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the district of North Norfolk.[2][3]There are no shops in Barsham, and the White Horse Inn in East Barsham is the only pub.The mediaeval pilgrimage centre of Walsingham lies only 1¼ miles north of Houghton St Giles, and the Roman Catholic National Shrine of Our Lady or Slipper Chapel is located within the civil parish of Barsham. East Barsham Manor, in the village of East Barsham, is an important work of Tudor architecture.The Wymondham to Wells Branch railway line ran through the parish, but this closed during the Beeching Axe of the 1960s.

East Barsham Manor is an important work of Tudor architecture, a leading and early example of a prodigy house, originally built in the 1520s. It is located in the village of East Barsham, about 2.5 miles (4.1 km) north of the town of Fakenham and 2.1 miles (3.4 km) south west of the village of Walsingham in the English county of Norfolk. It is protected as a Grade I listed building.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Walsingham, informally known as the Slipper Chapel or the Chapel of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, is a Catholic basilica in Houghton Saint Giles, Norfolk, England. Built in 1340, it was the last chapel on the pilgrim route to Walsingham. Pope Pius XII granted a canonical coronation to the venerated statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of Our Lady of Walsingham presently enshrined within the chapel on 15 August 1954. Pope Francis raised the sanctuary to the status of a minor basilica via an apostolic decree on 27 December 2015.

Sculthorpe is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. The village is some 4 km (2.5 mi) north-west of Fakenham and 5 km (3.1 mi) south-east of South Creake. The village's name means 'Skuli's outlying farm/settlement'. The civil parish has an area of 8.52 km2 (3.29 sq mi) and in 2001 had a population of 744 in 312 households, the population increasing to 751 at the 2011 census. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the district of North Norfolk. The former water mill, about a mile south of the parish church, is now a pub and restaurant, but some of the workings remain visible. The large airfield of RAF Sculthorpe lies immediately to the west of the village. Sculthorpe Moor Community Nature Reserve lies to the south of the village in Turf Moor Road The Village also has a second pub called The Sculthorpe Aviator.

The Fakenham Academy (formerly Fakenham Grammar School and Fakenham High School and College) is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form located at Field Lane Fakenham, Norfolk, England. The school offers GCSEs and BTECs as programmes of study. Pupils in the sixth form can choose to study from a range of A Levels and BTECs.

Houghton Saint Giles is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Barsham, in the North Norfolk district, in the English county of Norfolk. It has also been referred to as Houghton-le-Dale or Houghton-in-the-Hole. In 1931 the parish had a population of 142.The villages name means 'hill-spur farm/settlement'. The village is one of four settlements that are within the parish of Barsham; the other villages are West Barsham, East Barsham and North Barsham. Originally all four villages had their own parishes, but these were merged to create a single civil parish on 1 April 1935.Houghton Saint Giles is 4.2 miles north of the town of Fakenham, 21.2 miles west of Cromer and 118 miles north of London. Fakenham ("Fearknum"; "Fearkenham") is a market town and civil parish in Norfolk, England. It is situated on the River Wensum, about 25 miles (40 kilometres) north-west of Norwich. The town is at the junction of several local roads, including the A148 from King's Lynn to Cromer, the A1067 to Norwich and the A1065 to Swaffham. The civil parish has an area of 3.49 sq mi (9.0 km2). In the 2001 census, it had a population of 7,357 in 3,292 households; this increased to 7,617 at the 2011 census. For the purposes of local government, the parish lies within the district of North Norfolk. and within the County of Norfolk. Fakenham has been a market town since 1250, known particularly for its corn, barley and wheat trading; in the 19th century, it became noted for its printing. Fakenham Racecourse is a thoroughbred horse racing venue to the south of the town. The town has a long name of Fakenham Lancaster which derives from the ownership of the manor in 1377 being transferred to John of Gaunt, the Duke of Lancaster. The name continues to be used today, including on recently placed history trail plaques around the town; it is also used to name the town's two wards, for the purpose of electing councillors to North Norfolk District Council: Lancaster North and Lancaster South. The town is part of the County Division of Fakenham and the Raynhams for the purpose of electing a county councillor to Norfolk County Council.

Egmere medieval settlement is a deserted medieval village in Norfolk, England, about 2.5 miles (4.0 km) west of Walsingham. It is a Scheduled Monument.

The Corn Exchange is a commercial building in the Market Place, Fakenham, Norfolk, England. The structure, which is currently used as a cinema, is a Grade II listed building.
