Brampton, Eden

Broom is a hamlet near the village of Long Marton, in the Eden district, in the county of Cumbria, England.

St Margaret and St James' Church is located about 0.5 miles (0.8 km) to the south of the village of Long Marton, Cumbria, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Appleby, the archdeaconry of Carlisle, and the diocese of Carlisle. The parish is one of ten local parishes which form the benefice of the Heart of Eden. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building.

The Appleby Horse Fair, also known as Appleby New Fair, is "an annual gathering of Gypsies and Travellers in the town of Appleby-in-Westmorland in Cumbria, England." The horse fair is held each year in early June, attracting roughly 10,000 Gypsies and Travellers, about 1,000 caravans, several hundred horse-drawn vehicles, and about 30,000 visitors. The Gypsy and Traveller attendees include British Romanichal, Irish Travellers, Scottish Gypsy and Traveller groups, Kale (Welsh Romanies) and more.

Long Marton is a village and civil parish in the Eden District of the English county of Cumbria. In 2011 the population was 827. The village previously had a railway station called Long Marton railway station which closed in 1970. Within the parish are also the hamlets of Marton Moor and Broom. Long Marton also has a pub. Located near the A66 3 miles from Appleby-in-Westmorland - the parish of Long Marton is bounded on the east by the parish of Dufton, on the south by the parish of St. Michael's Appleby, on the west by the parish of Kirkby Thore, and on the north by the parish of Alston Moor in the former county of Cumberland:In the 1870s, Long Marton was described as: MARTON (LoNG), a township and a parish in East Ward district, Westmoreland. The township lies on Trout beck, an affluent of the river Eden, 1½ mile ESE of Kirkby-Thore r. station, and 3½ NW by N of Appleby; and contains the village of Brampton-Croft's End. The parish includes also the townships of Brampton and Knock; and its Post town is Kirkby-Thore, under Penrith. Acres, 3,200. Long Marton railway station was a railway station which served the village of Long Marton in Cumbria, England. Situated on the Settle-Carlisle Line, it was located 27+3⁄4 miles (44.7 km) south of Carlisle.

North Westmorland was a rural district in Westmorland, England from 1935 to 1974. It now forms part of the Eden district of Cumbria. It was formed in 1935 by the merger of the East Westmorland Rural District, Shap urban district and most of West Ward Rural District. [1] The district entirely surrounded the Appleby municipal borough.

Appleby Grammar School is a co-educational comprehensive secondary school and sixth form in Appleby-in-Westmorland for students aged 11 to 18. Since 2011, it has been an Academy. Until 2013, the school was a registered charity.

Dufton is a village and civil parish in Cumbria, England. Historically part of Westmorland, it lies in the Eden Valley and below Great Dun Fell. It is mostly around 180m above sea level. At the 2011 census the parish had a population of 201 , increasing to 204 at the 2011 Census The centre of the village is built around a green, on the north side of which is the Stag Inn. The village green is oblong in shape and is bisected by an avenue of lime trees that crosses it diagonally. Houses in the village were built from the 17th century onwards and the village has changed little over the last 100 years.

Crackenthorpe is a village and civil parish in the Eden District of Cumbria, England. It is about 12 miles (19 km) south east of Penrith. The village was on the A66 road until it was by-passed. The population of the civil parish was less than 100 at the 2011 Census. Details are therefore included in the parish of Long Marton. Crackenthorpe Hall is a large grade II listed house which was rebuilt in the early 17th century and restructured in circa 1685 by Hugh & Thomas Machell. It has since been subdivided into several dwellings. It was reputedly haunted by the ghost of Peg Sneddle, the grey lady of Crackenthorpe. Her body was exhumed and buried in the bed of the River Eden under a boulder of Shap granite known as Peg's stone.

Hoff Beck is a stream that is a tributary of the River Eden in the English county of Cumbria. The headwaters of the beck lie within the Yorkshire Dales National Park and include the tributary streams of Dry Beck, Scale Beck, Asby Beck and Oak Beck. The tributaries drain the Orton Fells and the north side of Great Asby Scar. Dry Beck flows into Scale Beck just to the south of the hamlet of Drybeck, whilst Asby Beck flows through the centre of the village of Great Asby. Hoff Beck itself forms with the confluence of Scale Beck and Asby Beck. Shortly after the confluence, the beck flows over Rutter Force, a 30-foot (9.1 m) high waterfall. Flowing north, the Hoff Beck receives the water of the Oak Beck before leaving the national park and passing the hamlet of Hoff. It then flows through the village of Colby before entering the River Eden downstream of the town of Appleby-in-Westmorland. The Environment Agency defines three waterbodies for the Hoff Beck and its catchment area and tributaries. Hoff Beck (lower) comprises the area up to the confluence of the Scale Beck and Asby Beck, Hoff Beck (upper) comprises the area along the Asby Beck above that confluence, and Scale Beck comprises the area along the Scale Beck above that confluence. In 2019, Hoff Beck (upper) and Scale Beck were classified as having a good ecological status, whilst Hoff Beck (lower) had a moderate status. In 2022, Hoff Beck (lower) was classified as having a good status, whilst no classifications were recorded for the other two. The Dales High Way, a 90-mile (140 km) long-distance footpath that runs from Saltaire, in West Yorkshire, to Appleby, follows the Hoff Beck from Rutter Force to Bandley Bridge, about half way between Hoff and Colby.

Appleby Friary was a friary at Appleby-in-Westmorland, in Cumbria, England. It was a Carmelite friary founded c. 1290 and dissolved in 1539. Its patrons included Lord Clifford of Appleby and Lord Vesey. A Grade II listed 19th-century house in Appleby bears the name The Friary. The location of the friary itself remains uncertain.

St Cuthbert's Church is situated 3⁄4 mile (1.2 km) north of the village of Dufton, Cumbria, England. It should not be confused with the nearby St Cuthbert's church, Milburn. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Appleby, the archdeaconry of Carlisle, and the diocese of Carlisle. The parish is one of ten parishes which form the benefice of the Heart of Eden.The Parish Church of St Cuthbert, Dufton, is situated north-west of the village of Dufton – the name of which means 'dove farm' – and nestles beneath the eastern fells above the Eden Valley, about 3 miles (4.8 km) north of Appleby and 12 miles (19 km) south-east of Penrith. From the new churchyard, fine views are to be had of Dufton Pike and the Pennines.
