The diocese of Sisteron was abolished in 1801, after which the cathedral continued as a parish church.The nave, the choir, the transept and the cloister date from the early 13th century, representing one of the first examples of Gothic style in southern France. Forcalquier is located between the Lure and Luberon mountain ranges, about 30 km (19 mi) south of Sisteron and 10 km (6.2 mi) west of the Durance river. During the Middle Ages it was the capital of Haute-Provence.
