Masonboro Island

The estuarine system of the North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve is the third largest in the country, encompassing more the 10,000 acres (4,000 ha). This system is of prime economic importance to the coastal area—90 percent of the commercial seafood species caught in the state spends at least part of their lives in an estuary. The North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve was established to preserve these fragile natural areas and the variety of life they support. The state is representative of two major biogeographic regions located north (Virginian) and south (Carolinian) of Cape Hatteras. Therefore, NOAA and the state of North Carolina created a multi-component reserve with the following sites: Currituck Banks (960 acres near Corolla), Rachel Carson (2,625 acres near Beaufort), Masonboro Island (5,097 acres near Wrightsville Beach) and Zeke's Island (1,165 acres near Kure Beach).

Myrtle Grove is a census-designated place (CDP) in New Hanover County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 8,875 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Monkey Junction is an unincorporated area near Wilmington in New Hanover County at the intersection of College Road (NC 132) and Carolina Beach Road (US 421). It is one of several centers of recent commercial and residential growth near Wilmington. In 2008, Wilmington began controversial efforts to annex the community, but in 2012, the annexation requests were overturned by the North Carolina General Assembly.

Tregembo Animal Park is a zoo in Wilmington, North Carolina. Founded as the Tote-Em-In Zoo in 1952 by George and June Tregembo, featuring animals and a collection of "oddities", the park was renamed the Tregembo Animal Park in 2004. Following the retirement of the owner, the facility was leased to Jerry Brewer until 2003 when the Tregembo family took over operations. Following this change, the Tregembos wanted to change the focus to education.

Masonboro was a census-designated place (CDP) in New Hanover County, North Carolina. The last census count in 2000 was 11,812. Masonboro was located southeast of Wilmington near the Atlantic coast.

Masonboro Sound Historic District is a national historic district located near Wilmington, New Hanover County, North Carolina. The district encompasses 22 contributing buildings, 2 contributing sites, 8 contributing structures, and 1 contributing object near Wilmington. The district developed during the 19th and early-20th century and includes notable examples of Italian Renaissance and Colonial Revival style architecture. There are 10 contributing dwellings and 13 contributing outbuildings. Notable dwellings include the Carr-Ormand House (1932), Willard-Sprunt-Woolvin House (1880), Cazaux-Williams-Crow House (Halcyon Hall, 1877, 1880s, 1937), Parsley-Love House (Hickory Hill, 1885, 1912), Live Oaks (1913), Taylor-Bissinger House (1937), the "Doll House" (1924), and Hill-Anderson Cottage (c. 1835).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

New Hanover County is one of 100 counties located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 225,702. Though the second-smallest NC county in land area, it is one of the most populous, as its county seat, Wilmington, is one of the state's largest cities. The county was created in 1729 as New Hanover Precinct and gained county status in 1739. New Hanover County is included in the Wilmington, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area, which also includes neighboring Pender County.

Cape Fear Academy is a private, coeducational PK3–12 school in Wilmington, North Carolina that was established on September 11, 1967 as a segregation academy. It was named for Cape Fear Military Academy, an independent school for boys in Wilmington that operated from 1868 until 1916. The present school's first class graduated in 1971.

Silver Lake is a census-designated place in New Hanover County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,598 at the 2010 census, down from 5,788 in 2000. It is part of the Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Eugene Ashley High School is a high school just outside Wilmington, North Carolina, located in the New Hanover County School District. The facility was opened in the New Hanover County Veteran's Park in 2001. The school was named after Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Eugene Ashley, Jr., a native of Wilmington who died at age 37 in the battle of Lang Vei during the Vietnam War. As of the 2015–16 school year, it is 382 students over capacity.

Hewletts Creek is a stream in New Hanover County, North Carolina, in the United States. It is the only stream of its name in the United States. Hewletts Creek was named for a family of settlers.
