Lyons Dam (National ID # CA00387) is a dam in Tuolumne County, California. The concrete single-arch dam was constructed in 1930 (1930) by the Pacific Gas and Electric Company, with a height of 132 feet (40 m) and a length of 535 feet (163 m) at its crest. It impounds the South Fork Stanislaus River for the municipal water supply of the Twain Harte, California area. Owned and operated by Pacific Gas and Electric Company, the largest private owner of hydroelectric facilities in the United States, it is one of the company's 174 dams. The reservoir it creates, Lyons Reservoir, has a normal water surface of 184 acres (74 ha), and a maximum capacity of 6,400 acre-feet (7,900,000 m3). Recreation includes fishing. The site is surrounded by the Stanislaus National Forest. In 2012, about 625 acres (253 ha) of adjacent land known as the Rushing Meadows parcel was transferred from PG&E's ownership to the National Forest Service, as part of the utility's bankruptcy settlement.

Cherokee, California is a historical mining town site in Tuolumne, California in Tuolumne County, California. The site of the Cherokee, California is a California Historical Landmark No. 410 listed on December 11, 1949. The Scott brothers, descendants of the Cherokee Tribe, discovered gold in 1853 in Tuolumne County. Soon many placer mines started in the valley of Cherokee and the town of Cherokee was founded. When the placer gold panning (diggins) ran out, some quartz mines opened around Cherokee. Cherokee was the first mining town in the East Best of the California Mother Lode. Cherokee supported the other nearby mining camp of Independence, Little Jessie, Mary Ellen, Plowboy and Excelsior. At its peak Cherokee had a population of 700 in 1856. After the gold ran out the Scanvino brothers, Domingo and Ciovanni, from Italy, started a family farm that replaced Cherokee. Cherokee is now a neighborhood of Tuolumne City. The Tuolumne City Memorial Museum preserves the history of this mining and logging town on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada in California. Exhibits trace the area's history going back to early Miwok Indian culture, early agricultural endeavors, gold mining, and the extensive logging operations of the West Side Lumber Company.Tuolumne, which was originally known as Summerville, and later Carters, was the site of the West Side's large sawmill, which operated from 1899 until the 1960s, when it burned during a labor strike. The company also operated an extensive narrow-gauge railroad into the Sierra to bring logs to the mill. Standard-gauge tracks of the well-known Sierra Railroad came to Tuolumne to take finished lumber to market.Some trestles and other remnants of the logging railroad still exist, and the museum organizes annual field trips into the woods to visit such sites.The museum has a number of exhibits chronicling the lives of prominent citizens of the area, including a collection of family Bibles and historic cemetery records.
