Castle Mill Stream

The Gasworks Bridge, also known as the Old Gasworks Bridge, is an iron bridge across the River Thames at Oxford in England. It is a pedestrian bridge linking St Ebbes to the Grandpont nature reserve. It crosses the river on the reach between Iffley Lock and Osney Lock. The bridge was constructed by the Oxford & District Gas Company in 1886 for a short railway branch line to carry coal to the gas works from the main Cherwell Valley Line at a junction just south of Osney Rail Bridge. The bridge was built by assembling sections on the south bank of the river and floating them into position. The gas works was demolished in 1960; no evidence of the railway line is visible on the footbridge. Since the demolition of the gas works, other names have been used for the bridge. For a few years after the closure of the railway it appears to have been crossed by a private road, and the Environment Agency refers to the bridge simply as "Road Bridge", although no road now crosses it. The bridge is now usually referred to by its old name. It has occasionally been referred to as Osney Footbridge, although the bridge is some distance from Osney, and that name is also used for a different bridge.

Grandpont is a mainly residential area in south Oxford. It is west of Abingdon Road, and consists mainly of narrow streets that run at right angles to the main road, with terraced late-Victorian and Edwardian houses. It also contains the Grandpont Nature Park—a riverside park managed by Oxford City Council (grid reference SP510054). The park covers 7.4 acres (3 ha) and was created in 1985 on the site of a gas works that was demolished in 1960. The former railway bridge, used to carry coal from the main railway line across the River Thames to the older gas works in St Ebbes on the north bank, still stands, and is in use as a footbridge. A later bridge, Grandpont Bridge, provides a more direct pedestrian and cycle route across the river to St Ebbes.

Oxford Ice Rink is a 56 × 26m ice rink located on Oxpens Road in Oxford, England. It is a ten-minute walk from Oxford city centre and railway station. In 1980, money was raised by the Oxford Ice Skating Trust (OXIST) for the construction of a new ice rink — a project that was taken over by the Oxford City Council, who continue to own and manage the premises. The rink, designed by Nicholas Grimshaw, was built on Oxpens Road (known as Nun's Walk prior to 1850) and opened in 1984 with an ice hockey match between the Oxford City Stars and the Oxford University Ice Hockey Club. It looks like a ship, thanks to two 30-metre masts at each end. The north end of the building is fully glazed, allowing plenty of natural light into the rink. The rink offers public and disco. Both group and individual lessons in figure skating and ice dance are available from BITA qualified instructors. In February 2009, the Oxford City Council awarded the contract to manage leisure in Oxford. Since 31 March 2009, all of Oxford Leisure, including the Oxford Ice Rink has been run by Fusion-Lifestyle Ltd. This assured the future of the rink for the duration of the contract with Fusion, who will oversee the refurbishment of the facility.

Grandpont Bridge is a footbridge across the River Thames near the centre of Oxford, England that was temporarily closed in March 2021. It links Friars Wharf in St Ebbes on the north bank to the Geoffrey Arthur Building of Pembroke College, built in 1990, and the Grandpont area. It crosses the Thames on the reach between Iffley Lock and Osney Lock. The bridge was also used by cyclists. It lies on the Hanson Way, part of National Cycle Network route 5.The Environment Agency refers to the bridge as "Grandpont Bridge". Other sources also call the bridge "Oxford footbridge", and "Gasworks Pipe Bridge", the name being for the town gas, chiefly methane, produced by the treatment of coal and its less congealed coke form in particular. The bridge was built in the 1930s. The bridge only carried a utility pipe and lacked a walkway in 1977. Following a survey which revealed a danger of collapse, it was closed to traffic in March 2021. A contractor was appointed to fix the bridge in April of 2023, and works are scheduled to be complete by October 2023.The bridge takes its name from Grandpont, the area south of the bridge, which itself takes its name from a much earlier bridge-causeway which included the next bridge downstream, now known as Folly Bridge.

City of Oxford College is a further education college in Oxford, England. It has two campuses – the City Centre campus in Oxford city centre and the Technology Campus in Blackbird Leys, south east of Oxford city.

Activate Learning is an education and training group based in Oxford. It runs schools, further education colleges and work-based training across Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Surrey, and delivers higher-education and international study programmes too. Activate Learning was launched on 4 November 2013 following the reorganisation, restructure and rebranding of the Oxford & Cherwell Valley College (OCVC) Group in 2013.

Osney Rail Bridge is a railway bridge over the River Thames at Oxford in England. It carries the Cherwell Valley Line between Didcot and Oxford across the river on the reach between Iffley Lock and Osney Lock. The original bridge was built in 1850, when the Great Western Railway built a new line from its original Oxford station at Grandpont to Rugby. The north side of the bridge was on the island which was then called Osney. A second bridge was built in 1887 within a foot or so of the first bridge.The bridge is maintained by Network Rail, who refer to the bridge as River Isis Crossing.

Bulstake Stream, also spelt Bullstake Stream, is a backwater of the River Thames at Oxford, England. The stream leaves the main stream of the Thames at a river junction known as Four Rivers, at the south west corner of Fiddler's Island opposite Sheepwash Channel. It immediately flows past Tumbling Bay, which had a bathing place in use from 1853 to 1990, when the toilets and huts were removed. The pool is still in occasional use, though in disrepair. A fish race was added in to bypass the bathing place and was completed by 2020. The Osney Ditch flows out of the stream southeast towards Osney. The stream follows a semi-circular course, west and then south, passing under bridges on Binsey Lane and Botley Road (Bulstake Bridge) to a confluence with Seacourt/Hinksey Stream near North Hinksey. It resumes, east, past Osney Mead Industrial Estate, and rejoins the Thames at the Osney Rail Bridge. The Thames Path crosses the stream on a bridge known as Boney's Bridge. Botley Stream flows into it from Seacourt Stream just north of Botley Road. The lower part (resumption) is also known as Potts Stream or Pot Stream.Until 1790, the stream was the main navigation channel of the Thames. It became a backwater when Osney Lock was opened.

Paradise Street is a historical street in central Oxford, England. It is in the St Ebbe's area of Oxford, to the southwest of Oxford Castle. The street runs from Paradise Square to Quaking Bridge, across Castle Mill Stream. It continues to the east into Castle Street. Historically, both Greyfriars and Blackfriars lived here. The Jolly Farmers public house, a tavern originating in 1592, and in continual use ever since, sits on the corner of Paradise Street and Square. It has been the main Oxford LGBTQ+ venue since 1982. On the south side of the street is a late 17th-century house, Greyfriars, conserved in 1985. The two Greyfriars buildings on this street are now luxury holiday rentals called Greyfriars Hideaway. Swan Bridge is a Grade II listed bridge over the Castle Mill Stream forming part of Paradise Street. The bridge was Grade II listed in 1972.The Swan's Nest Brewery, later the Swan Brewery, was established by the early 18th century in Paradise Street. In 1795, it was acquired by William Hall. The brewery became known as Hall's Oxford Brewery, which acquired other local breweries. Hall's Brewery was acquired by Samuel Allsopp & Sons in 1926, after which it ceased brewing in Oxford.In 1885, Castle Terrace was built by F. J. Codd in the street. This became Simon House but has since been demolished and is now under transformation to become apartments. At the top end of the street is Westgate Oxford, the transformed shopping centre that is now home to many luxury brands, coffee shops, gyms, cinema, delis and restaurants.

Swan Bridge is a Grade II listed bridge over the Castle Mill Stream in the city of Oxford, England. It forms part of Paradise Street. The bridge is close to Oxford Castle to the north. Also to the north on the Castle Mill Stream is Quaking Bridge. To the south is a bridge for Oxpens Road. The bridge was Grade II listed in 1972.Also located in Paradise Street close to the bridge on the Castle Mill Stream was the Swan's Nest Brewery (later the Swan Brewery), dating from the early 18th century.

Oxford was a parliamentary constituency in the United Kingdom, comprising the city of Oxford in the county of Oxfordshire.

The siege of Oxford comprised the English Civil War military campaigns waged to besiege the Royalist controlled city of Oxford, involving three short engagements over twenty-five months, which ended with a Parliamentarian victory in June 1646. The first engagement was in May 1644, during which King Charles I escaped, thus preventing a formal siege. The second, in May 1645, had barely started when Sir Thomas Fairfax was given orders to stop and pursue the King to Naseby instead. The last siege began in May 1646 and was a formal siege of two months; but the war was obviously over and negotiation, rather than fighting, took precedence. Being careful not to inflict too much damage on the city, Fairfax even sent in food to the King's second son, James, and was happy to conclude the siege with an honourable agreement before any further escalation occurred.
