Plougastel-Daoulas

The Calvary of Plougastel-Daoulas in the arrondissement of Brest comprises a raised octagonal pedestal made from the yellow granite of Logonna-Dāaoulas, flanked by four thick arched buttresses. All the sculptural work is by the Maître de Plougastel except the horseman on the left of the crucifix which is by Millet. It is a listed historical monument since 1889.

The Pont de l'Iroise (French pronunciation: [pɔ̃ də liʁwaz], literally Bridge of the Iroise) is a cable-stayed bridge in Finistère, Brittany, France, which spans the Élorn river where it enters the roadstead of Brest. It carries route nationale 165, the road between Brest and Quimper, and connects Le Relecq-Kerhuon to the north with Plougastel-Daoulas to the south. The bridge is named after the Iroise Sea, into which the roadstead of Brest opens.

The Plougastel Bridge, or Albert-Louppe Bridge, is a bridge over the river Élorn near Brest, France, connecting Plougastel-Daoulas and Le Relecq-Kerhuon. Construction on the Plougastel Bridge started in 1926 and was completed on 9 October 1930. Part of it was destroyed by the German army in 1944, and shortly after was closed for repair. It was reopened after the widening and construction five years later. Between 1991 and 1994 another bridge, the Pont de l'Iroise, was built parallel to this bridge. Today the Plougastel carries tractor, pedestrian and bicycle traffic and is a landmark on the route of the Paris–Brest–Paris bicycle event. The Plougastel Bridge is an arch bridge, or has a fixed, double deck structure. The arches are composed of concrete and have a total length of around 888m. The three major spans are 188 m but sometimes said to be 186 m.The engineer who constructed the bridge was named Eugène Freyssinet, and the president of the committee managing the project was Albert Louppe, an explosives engineer who pursued a parallel career in politics, becoming the Senator for Finistère in 1921. Louppe died in 1927, one year after work on constructing the bridge finally began.

The Élorn (French pronunciation: [elɔʁn]; Breton: Elorn) is a 56.4-kilometre (35 mi) long river in Brittany, France. Its source is in the monts d'Arrée, 1.5 kilometres (0.9 mi) north-northeast of Le Tuchenn Kador, and it then runs through several small towns such as Sizun and Landivisiau before flowing out into the roadstead of Brest. The maritime part of the river stops at Landerneau, where the Pont de Rohan blocks seaborne ships from sailing any further upstream. The river also crosses the château de la Roche-Maurice and many abandoned mills, and on the banks of its maritime part are several family properties belonging to families in Brest (Park an Coat, le Frout, Beau Repos, le Petit Manoir de Poul ar Velin). At low tide the mud is met, at high tide the sea flows over the countryside.

Le Relecq-Kerhuon (French pronunciation: [lə ʁəlɛk kɛʁyɔ̃]; Breton: Ar Releg-Kerhuon) is a commune in the Finistère department of Brittany in north-western France.

Guipavas (French pronunciation: [ɡipava]; Breton: Gwipavaz) is a commune in the Finistère department of Brittany in north-western France. The writer Maurice Polard (born 1932) is from Guipavas. The city is divided into two major parts: the west, known as the dynamic core of the city and suburban area of Brest, where a new commercial centre opened in 2007, and the east, which is more traditional and lies around the Roman Catholic church.

The canton of Guipavas is an administrative division of the Finistère department, northwestern France. Its borders were modified at the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. The Château de Joyeuse Garde is the site of a castle associated with Joyous Gard from Arthurian legend. Its ruins in the town of La Forest-Landerneau in Brittany date to the 6th century. It was listed as a monument historique on 6 October 1975. The castle is the subject of "Joyeuse Garde", an 1859 poem by Algernon Charles Swinburne.

The Aulne (French pronunciation: [on] ; Breton: Aon) is a 144 km (89 mi) long river of Brittany in north-western France, flowing down the hills and emptying into the roadstead of Brest, one of the many fjord-like bays just south of Brest. The river is part of the Canal de Nantes à Brest, the navigation canal that once connected the city of Nantes on the Loire with the port town of Brest on the Atlantic coast. This canal is still navigable over part of its length, but sea-going traffic is interrupted by the hydro-electric dam of Guerledan, which submerged a number of the original locks of the canal. The Aulne flows through Châteaulin. The river was known to the Romans as the Alaunus, a name of uncertain etymology.
