La Pedrera, Gijón

Leorio or Llorio is a parish of the municipality of Gijón, in Asturias, Spain. Its population was 428 in 2012. Leorio / Llorio borders the municipality of Siero in the south, with the district of Samartín de Güerces in the east and with the district of Granda in the north. In this parish is located the Escuela de Fútbol de Mareo, where are the Sporting de Gijón headquarters.

The Escuela de Fútbol de Mareo, officially Escuela de Fútbol Ángel Viejo Feliú, is the training ground and academy base of the Spanish football club Sporting de Gijón. It was officially opened in 1978 and used by the main team and the youth teams of the club. The designer was architect Miguel Díaz Negrete. Covering an area of 112,000 m² in the parish of Leorio, Gijón, it is used since 1978 for youth and senior teams trainings.

Salceo is one of thirteen parishes (administrative divisions) in Quirós, a municipality within the province and autonomous community of the Principality of Asturias, in northern Spain. The population is 112 (INE 2011).

La Camocha is a former coal mine which is seven kilometers south of Gijon, Asturias, Spain. It was operated by Minas la Camocha SA, which is affiliated with González y Díez SA.The former mining railway that once linked the coal mine of La Camocha to Veriña has been replaced by La Camocha Greenway, a trail for hikers and cyclists.The trade union movement Comisiones Obreras (CC.OO.) was born in the La Camocha mine.

L'Abadía Cenero (Spanish: Cenero) is a parish of the municipality of Gijón / Xixón, in Asturias, Spain. Its population was 1,467 in 2012. The highest point of the parish is the Monte Los Llanos with 279 meters. The lowest one is near the River Pinzales, exiting Cenero, with 16 meters. L'Abadía Cenero is the biggest district of Gijón / Xixón. Its northern border (close to Tremañes) is heavily industrialized, due to its proximity with Arcelor. At Veranes, one of the neighbours of L'Abadía Cenero, is located the Roman Villa of Veranes.

The siege of Gijón, one of the first actions in the Spanish Civil War, saw the anarchist militia crushing a small Nationalist garrison in Gijón, between 19 July and 16 August 1936. The militia – nominally fighting in defense of the Republic – laid siege to the Simancas barracks in the city of Gijón. These were defended by about 180 soldiers and Guardia Civil officers who had risen in support of General Franco's rebellion and seized the post for the Nationalists. The battle was remarkable for its viciousness and the stubbornness of the besieged.

Gijón (Spanish: [xiˈxon]) or Xixón (Asturian: [ʃiˈʃoŋ]) is a city and municipality in north-western Spain. It is the largest city and municipality by population in the autonomous community of Asturias. It is located on the coast of the Cantabrian Sea in the Bay of Biscay, in the central-northern part of Asturias; it is approximately 24 km (15 mi) north-east of Oviedo, the capital of Asturias, and 26 km (16 mi) from Avilés. With a population of 273,744 as of 2023, Gijón is the 15th largest city in Spain. Gijón forms part of a large metropolitan area that includes twenty councils in the center of the region, structured with a dense network of roads, highways and railways and with a population of 835,053 inhabitants in 2011, making it the seventh largest in Spain.During the 20th century, Gijón developed as an industrial city in the steel and naval industries. However, due to the decline in manufacturing in these industries, in recent years Gijón is undergoing a transformation into an important tourist, university, commercial and R&D center. Gijón is the location of the Radiotelevisión del Principado de Asturias, the neighbourhood of Cimavilla, the Universidad Laboral de Gijón, the Revillagigedo Palace, and the adjoining Collegiate Church of San Juan Bautista. Gijón is part of the statistical (not yet developed from an administrative standpoint) comarca of Gijón.

Granda is a district (parroquia rural) of the municipality of Gijón / Xixón, in Asturias, Spain. Its population was 661 in 2012. Granda is a residential and rural area, bordering with the city district in the north and with Vega in the south.

La Camocha is a mining neighbourhood located in the rural district parish of Vega (Gijón / Xixón) in the Principality of Asturias, Spain. The town rose surrounding the La Camocha coal mine.

Fresno is a district (parroquia rural) of the municipality of Gijón / Xixón, in Asturias, Spain. The population of Fresno was 712 in 2003 and 597 in 2012. Fresno is a heavily industrialized area of Gijón / Xixón.

Unión Club Ceares is a Spanish football team based in the neighbourhood of Ceares, Gijón, in the autonomous community of Asturias. Founded in 1946, it plays in Tercera Federación – Group 2, holding home games at Campo de La Cruz, which has a capacity of 1,500 spectators.
