Seneca Army Airfield is a closed facility of the United States Army that was originally built as the operational field for Sampson Air Force Base around 1953. Following the closure of the base, the field was turned over to the Army and became part of the nearby Seneca Army Depot. During this time, it was loosely controlled by the Army, as patrols reported seeing civilian aircraft on the runways. Around 1965, the airport reverted to civilian control, although this period was brief and it was converted back to military control soon after. The airport closed by 2000, when the nearby depot closed due to recommendations from the 1995 Base Realignment and Closure Commission.

A tunnel valley is a U-shaped valley originally cut under the glacial ice near the margin of continental ice sheets such as that now covering Antarctica and formerly covering portions of all continents during past glacial ages. They can be as long as 100 km (62 mi), 4 km (2.5 mi) wide, and 400 m (1,300 ft) deep. Tunnel valleys were formed by subglacial erosion by water and served as subglacial drainage pathways carrying large volumes of meltwater. Their cross-sections often exhibit steep-sided flanks similar to fjord walls. They presently appear as dry valleys, lakes, seabed depressions, and as areas filled with sediment. If they are filled with sediment, their lower layers are filled primarily with glacial, glaciofluvial or glaciolacustrine sediment, supplemented by upper layers of temperate infill. They can be found in areas formerly covered by glacial ice sheets including Africa, Asia, North America, Europe, Australia and offshore in the North Sea, the Atlantic and in waters near Antarctica. Tunnel valleys appear in the technical literature under several terms, including tunnel channels, subglacial valleys, iceways, snake coils and linear incisions.

The former Seneca Army Depot occupied 10,587 acres (4,284 ha) between Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake in Seneca County, New York. It was used as a munitions storage and disposal facility by the United States Army from 1941 until the 1990s. The Depot was listed in the 1995 Base Realignment and Closure Commission and formally shut down in 2000. The property has since been transferred to the Seneca County Industrial Development Agency, which leases it to Seneca County Economic Development Corp.Home to the world's largest herd of white deer, the base is in the towns of Varick and Romulus. Adjacent to the storage facility is the now-closed Seneca Army Airfield, whose long runway could handle large cargo aircraft.

Varick is a hamlet in the Town of Varick, Seneca County, New York, United States near the former Seneca Army Depot along Reeder Creek. It is located nine miles (14 km) southeast of the City of Geneva, at an elevation of 604 feet (184 m). The primary intersection in the hamlet is at N.Y. Route 96A and Yale Farm Road (CR 127).

Varick is a town in Seneca County, New York, United States. The population was 1,639 at the 2020 census. The town is named after Richard Varick, an officer in the American Revolution, mayor of New York City, and uncle of the first Town Supervisor, Anthony Dey. The Town of Varick is located in the central part of the county and is southeast of Geneva. There is no post office in the Town of Varick. The primary postal district covering the area is Zip Code 14541 for Romulus.

The Willard Asylum for the Chronic Insane is a former state hospital in Willard, New York, near Seneca Lake. The Willard drug treatment center was opened in 1995 on the campus of the former Willard Psychiatric State Hospital, a facility for mental patients. In 1995, some 400 suitcases that were brought in by the patients were discovered in an asylum attic.

Keuka Lake Outlet is a river located in Yates County, New York. It drains Keuka Lake and flows into Seneca Lake by Dresden, New York. The Crooked Lake Canal was developed along the route of the river. The canal was later replaced by a railroad which is now a hiking and cycling trail, the Keuka Outlet Trail.

The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision is responsible for the care, confinement, and rehabilitation of approximately 54,700 inmates at 48 correctional facilities owned and operated by the State of New York (as of 2022).As of 2016 New York does not contract with private prisons, according to state law.

The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (NYSDOCCS) is the department of the New York State government that maintains the state prisons and parole system. As stated by the Department, it is "responsible for the care, confinement, and rehabilitation" of approximately 31,400 incarcerated people at 52 prisons funded by the State of New York, and supervises approximately 35,300 parolees at seven regional offices. The department employs a staff of approximately 28,000 individuals, including approximately 18,200 uniformed correction officers. Its regulations are compiled in title 7 of the New York Codes, Rules and Regulations. In response to falling crime rates and prison populations in New York State, the Department has closed a number of facilities since 2009. Since 2011, nearly 20 prisons have been closed, with plans for additional facility closures based on the continued decline in the number of incarcerated individuals in the state. On April 1, 2011, the New York State Division of Parole merged with the New York State Department of Correctional Services to form the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.

Willard Drug Treatment Campus is a specialized state prison in Seneca County, New York, United States. The prison focuses on treatment of drug-addicted convicts. Willard Drug Treatment Campus is located in Willard, a community in the Town of Romulus, and is adjacent to Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes Region. Willard is a 900-bed intensive "boot-camp" style drug treatment campus for men and women. This voluntary 97-day treatment program provides a sentencing option for individuals convicted of a drug offense and parole violators who otherwise would have been returned to a state prison in most cases for a year or more. The facility is operated by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision in conjunction with the Division of Parole and is licensed by the state Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS).

The Crooked Lake Canal was a canal in western New York, United States. Built from 1830-1833, the canal linked two Finger Lakes: Keuka and Seneca lakes. The name refers to the unusual shape of Keuka Lake, which was formerly called "Crooked Lake". The Keuka Outlet Trail now follows much of the route of the former canal.

Willard is a hamlet primarily in the Town of Romulus, Seneca County, New York, United States on the Ovid town line. It is located two miles (3 km) west of the Village of Ovid, at an elevation of 600 feet (183 m). The primary intersection in the hamlet is at N.Y. Route 96A and Main Street (CR 132). The community overlooks Seneca Lake.
