Old Eldon

Middridge is a village and civil parish in County Durham, England. It is situated east of Shildon and north-west of Newton Aycliffe. The village is situated near a quarry that was mined by the people many generations ago. There is one public house in the village: the Bay Horse. In 2011 the parish had a population of 312.

Leeholme is a village in County Durham, England. It is situated immediately to the north of Coundon. In the 2001 census Leeholme had a population of 513.

Leasingthorne is a hamlet and former pit village in County Durham, England. It is situated to the east of Bishop Auckland, near Coundon. Located in the Durham Coalfield, most of the former pit village of Leasingthorne was demolished in 1969 after the colliery closed, as Durham County Council's policy at the time preferred demolition over regeneration. There was also a brickworks in the village. In the 2001 census the village had a population of 41.

Middridge Quarry is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in County Durham, England. It is a disused quarry, situated alongside the railway line between Newton Aycliffe and Shildon, 1 km south of the village of Middridge. The quarry was excavated in Magnesian Limestone, the lowest level of which is an exceptionally fossiliferous marl slate which has yielded the richest and most varied Permian flora in the Britain and is the type locality for the pteridosperm Pseudoctensis middridgensis. Fossils obtained from the quarry have included several species of fish and reptiles, numerous invertebrates and plants, and the site is considered to be of international palaeontological importance.

Eldon is a village in County Durham, England. It is situated a few miles south-west of Bishop Auckland, a short distance from Shildon. It gives its name to the peerage of the Earls of Eldon. The village became a civil parish, with a parish council, on 1 April 2003. It had previously been part of Shildon parish. The population of this civil parish as at the 2011 census was 327.

Windlestone Hall is a mid-16th century Elizabethan country house, heavily rebuilt in 1821 to form a Greek revival stately home, situated near Rushyford, County Durham, England. The Hall sits within 400 acres of designed parkland. It is a Grade II* Listed building. As of 2022 it is back in private family ownership, with the surrounding estate maintained and conserved by a dedicated heritage charitable trust.

Grange Hill is a hamlet in the civil parish of Dene Valley, in County Durham, in England. It is situated to the south of Coundon, near Bishop Auckland.

Close House is a village in County Durham, England. It is situated a short distance to the north of Shildon, near to Eldon and Coundon Grange. In the 2001 census Close House had a population of 296. The famed Gilbert and Sullivan star John Reed was born here in 1916.

Locomotion, previously known as Locomotion the National Railway Museum at Shildon, is a railway museum in Shildon, County Durham, England. The museum was renamed in 2017 when it became part of the Science Museum Group.

Coundon is an old mining village and former civil parish in the County Durham district, in the ceremonial county of Durham, England. The Boldon Book mentions a mine in Coundon in the twelfth century. In 2001 it had a population of 2611. In 2011 the ward had a population of 7139.

Riseburn was a short-lived village in County Durham, situated south of Middridge and close to Eden Pit. It consisted of three terraces and a Primitive Methodist Chapel. Riseburn was built in the late nineteenth century, but only survived until the 1940s. Today, little if any trace remains of Riseburn.

Shildon is a railway station serving the town of Shildon in County Durham, England on the Tees Valley Line, between Bishop Auckland and Saltburn via Darlington. The station is situated 9 miles 8 chains (14.6 km) north-west of Darlington. It is owned by Network Rail and managed by Northern Trains.
