Spa School Bermondsey

Bermondsey (also known as St. Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey) was a parish in the metropolitan area of London, England. The ancient parish was part of Hundred of Brixton and County of Surrey. In 1855, it was included in the area of responsibility of the Metropolitan Board of Works (MBW). The act, establishing the MBW, also incorporated a new elected local authority for the parish known as The Vestry of the Parish of Bermondsey in the County of Surrey.The population of the parish in 1896 was 84,632, and it had adopted the Public Libraries Act 1850 in 1887. For electoral purposes, the parish was divided into four wards and had 120 elected vestrymen. In 1889, the area of the Metropolitan Board was reconstituted as the County of London, and Bermondsey was transferred to the new county. In 1900, the County of London was divided into twenty-eight metropolitan boroughs. The parish became the core part of the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey, which also covered the parish of Rotherhithe, and the area of the St Olave's District Board of Works (consisting of the two parishes of Southwark St John Horsleydown and Southwark St Olave and St Thomas). A borough council replaced the vestries and board, and in 1904, all four parishes in the borough were merged as the single civil parish of Bermondsey.

Paterson Park is located in Bermondsey, in central South East London, and is managed by the London Borough of Southwark. It was formally opened in 1953.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark is a constituency in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament. Since 2015, it has been represented by Neil Coyle, who was elected as a Labour MP but was suspended from the party in February 2022 following an accusation of racism.

Harris Academy Bermondsey is a secondary school located in the district of Bermondsey in the London Borough of Southwark, England. The school takes in girls between the ages of 11 and 18. In 2006 the school joined a federation of schools in South London called the Harris Federation named after the Lord Harris of Peckham who is sponsoring them. Prior to its transformation into an academy, the school was known as Aylwin Girls' School. The 'Aylwin Grammar School for Girls' was founded on the site in 1906, and was one of the first offering a free grammar school education to girls in the country. The school also takes part in fundraising for annual trips to Sri Lanka in association with the Yala Fund, a charity which helps build and improve schools in towns in Sri Lanka.

City of London Academy, Southwark is a co-educational secondary school and sixth form with academy status, located in the Bermondsey area of the London Borough of Southwark, England.The school was first opened in 2003, and moved to a new building in 2005. The building was designed by Studio E Architects and built by Willmott Dixon. The school is sponsored by the City of London Corporation, along with City Academy, Hackney and City of London Academy Islington. The school has specialisms in Business and Enterprise and in Sport, and the school teaches the non-curricular subject Business Studies, designed to help pupils become entrepreneurs. A unique aspect of The City of London Academy, Southwark is that students pay for their lunches with a Prepaid MasterCard debit card that parents top up using a smartphone app. Students can also pay for their meals with a fingerprint scanner.

Spa Road railway station in Bermondsey, south-east London, was the original terminus of the capital's first railway, the London and Greenwich Railway (L&GR). It was also the first railway terminus in what is now Greater London. First opened in 1836, the station went through several changes of ownership, was rebuilt several times, changed its name and was relocated a couple of hundred yards away from its original site before it closed in 1915 due to cost-saving measures during the First World War. The disused station building is today part of a light industrial estate. A number of elements of the original station – including the ticket office and remnants of the platforms – are still visible.

The Blue is a central market place in Bermondsey. The market is open Monday to Saturday from 9am until 5pm and has about 10 stall holders, selling food and clothes. The area has been known locally as The Blue for more than two hundred and thirty years and is probably named after the original Blue Anchor public house that gave its name to Blue Anchor Lane. The market has capacity for 24 stalls.Immediately north of Blue Anchor Lane on an arched viaduct are the multiple railway tracks of the Brighton and South East Main Lines. The Blue Anchor Lane joins St. James's Road where the viaduct arches to the immediate north west contain the remnants of the disused Spa Road railway station which was the original terminus of London's first railway. In 2005 a Metropolitan Police report described the area as a crime hotspot for "race crime and youth disorder". In October 2014 The Blue became a Business Improvement District (BID).

The Bermondsey Lion is a sculpture in The Blue, Bermondsey, London, created by Kevin Boys for Southwark Council. It was unveiled on 16 July 2011.The plaque on the plinth of the statue states: The Bermondsey Lion has been an enduring symbol of the area for centuries and initially represented the once powerful Bermondsey Abbey (hence the crozier placed in the front right paw). The Abbey was located around the (modern day) junction of Tower Bridge Road with Long Lane and Abbey Street, although it's [sic] lands extended over a vast area. The lion forms the major part of the former Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey's coat of arms which were granted in March 1901 by the College of Heralds and was used until it's [sic] merger into the modern day London Borough of Southwark on April 1st 1965. the old metropolitan borough was established from the parishes of Bermondsey, Rotherhithe, St Olave, St John Horsleydown and St Thomas Southwark. The symbols represented on the coat of arms are the lion with crozier for Bermondsey, the ship representing Rotherhithe's one time main industry and the axe and crown of King Olaf which was formerly used by the St Olave District Board of works. The legend Prosunt Gentibus Artes translated means Arts Profit the People and originally came from the former coat of arms for the vestry of Rotherhithe. This representation of the Bermondsey Lion created by Kevin Boys for Southwark Council was unveiled by the Worshipful the Mayor of Southwark, councillor Lorraine Lauder MBE, Flo Weller and Kyle Quin on 16th July 2011.

Monmouth Coffee Company is a coffee roaster, retailer and wholesaler in London, which was founded in 1978. It played an important role in regenerating Neal's Yard and Borough Market. It has remained focused on roasting and selling coffee beans and was one of the foundations for the third wave of coffee in London after the year 2000.

Rouel Road is a street in the Bermondsey area of south London.

St James's Church, Bermondsey, is a Church of England parish church in Bermondsey, south London. Designed by James Savage, it was one of the churches built as a result of the Church Building Acts. It was completed and consecrated in 1829 and given a separate parish (split off from the ancient parish of St Mary Magdalene's, Bermondsey) in 1840. In 1949 it was designated a Grade II* listed building.The spire was inspired by Sir Christopher Wren’s St. Stephen Walbrook, and required a separate Act of Parliament in 1831 to borrow extra funds.The churchyard was closed to burials in 1855, and was then used for communal drying. It was converted to gardens by the Metropolitan Public Gardens Association, and opened to the public in 1886. An obelisk memorial and some chest-tombs were retained.

St Philip's Church, Avondale Square (also known as St Philip the Apostle, Camberwell and St Philip and St Mark's, Camberwell) is a parish church within the Avondale Square Estate in Camberwell in the London Borough of Southwark. It is dedicated to St Philip the Apostle. The church is in the Archdeaconry of Southwark, in the Diocese of Southwark.
