Winnabow is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Brunswick County in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It is mainly a farming community along U.S. Route 17. There is no large retail presence in the area, except a Han Dee Hugo's convenience store at the intersection of NC 87 and US 17 South. Mill Creek Farm and Garden Center is the feed store for the area and is located beside Willetts Farm. Winnabow has a post office. In 2022, residents of the community petitioned for the area to be incorporated, but the proposal was rejected by the North Carolina Local Government Commission.

New Hope Presbyterian Church is a historic church located near Winnabow, Brunswick County, North Carolina. It was built in 1895, and is a one-story, frame church building with a Queen Anne style exterior and Gothic Revival interior. It features a steeply pitched, gable-front roof and rests on a brick pier foundation. A fellowship hall was added about 1941. Also on the property is a contributing church cemetery.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.

WWIL-FM (Life 90.5 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a contemporary Christian music format. Licensed to Wilmington, North Carolina, United States, the station serves the Wilmington, Jacksonville and North Myrtle Beach areas. The station is owned by Carolina Christian Radio, Inc, a 501c3 organization. Carolina Christian Radio is funded by the generous donations of individual listeners.

Leland is the most populous town in Brunswick County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 23,504 at the 2020 census, up from 13,527 in 2010. As of 2020, it is considered to be one of the fastest growing towns in North Carolina. It is part of the Myrtle Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. and the Cape Fear Council of Governments. The town of Leland is in the northeastern part of Brunswick County, with the town of Navassa to the north, Belville to east, and Boiling Springs Lake to the south. It is part of the Town Creek township, and Cape Fear region of North Carolina, a short distance north of the South Carolina state line. Leland is located five miles (8.0 km) west of Wilmington, 71 miles (114 km) north of Myrtle Beach, 84 miles (135 km) southeast of Fayetteville, and 135 miles (217 km) southeast of Raleigh.

North Brunswick High School is a public school located in Leland, North Carolina It is one of five high schools in the Brunswick County Schools district. As of the 2016–17 school year, North Brunswick has 1300 students currently enrolled in grades 9 through 12.

Boiling Spring Lakes is a city in Brunswick County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,943 at the 2020 census, up from 5,372 in 2010.

Belville is a town in Brunswick County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,936 at the 2010 census, up from 285 in 2000. It is part of the Wilmington, NC metropolitan area.

The Brunswick River in North Carolina runs for 6.2 miles along the west bank of Eagle Island near the city of Leland. The Brunswick River is a fork of the Cape Fear River; the river starts as an offshoot of the Cape Fear River at the town of Navassa and flows back into the Cape Fear River at the southern tip of Eagle Island. Mill Creek and Alligator Creek flow into the Brunswick River.

Atlantic Reserve Fleet, Wilmington was part of the United States Navy reserve fleets in Wilmington, North Carolina at 34.229479°N 77.982916°W / 34.229479; -77.982916. The reserve fleet was at and overflowed out of the former North Carolina Shipbuilding Company in the dredge out Brunswick River. The ships lined both sides of the Brunswick River. The freshwater of the river made a good spot to store ships. The reserve fleet was opened in 1946 to store the now many surplus ships after World War II. The mothball fleet was mostly cargo ships used in the merchant marine navy. When opened it had mostly cargo ships and a few troop ships. At its peak it had 300 Victory ships and Liberty ships, many that were built at the nearby former North Carolina Shipbuilding Company Shipyard. Some ships in the fleet were reactivated for the Korean War and Vietnam War. Atlantic Reserve Fleet, Wilmington closed in 1962, with the last ship removed in February 27, 1970. The ships in the fleet were either scrapped, used as targets or move to the James River Reserve Fleet and Beaumont Reserve Fleet. SS Dwight W. Morrow was the last ship to depart Atlantic Reserve Fleet, Wilmington, she was scrapped in February 1970.

North Carolina Shipbuilding Company was a shipyard in Wilmington, North Carolina, created as part of the U.S. Government's Emergency Shipbuilding Program in the early days of World War II. From 1941 through 1946, the company built 243 ships in all, beginning with the Liberty ship SS Zebulon B. Vance, and including 54 ships of the US Navy. Most of the latter were attack cargo ships (AKA), amphibious force flagships (AGC) and ammunition ships (AE). The Battle of Wilmington was fought February 11–22, 1865, during the American Civil War, mostly outside the city of Wilmington, North Carolina, between the opposing Union and Confederate Departments of North Carolina. The Union victory in January in the Second Battle of Fort Fisher meant that Wilmington, 30 miles upriver, could no longer be used by the Confederacy as a port. It fell to Union troops after they overcame Confederate defenses along the Cape Fear River south of the city. The Confederate General Braxton Bragg burned stores of tobacco and cotton, among other supplies and equipment, before leaving the city, to prevent the Union from seizing them.
