Brunswick River (North Carolina)

The Battle of Wilmington was fought February 11–22, 1865, during the American Civil War, mostly outside the city of Wilmington, North Carolina, between the opposing Union and Confederate Departments of North Carolina. The Union victory in January in the Second Battle of Fort Fisher meant that Wilmington, 30 miles upriver, could no longer be used by the Confederacy as a port. It fell to Union troops after they overcame Confederate defenses along the Cape Fear River south of the city. The Confederate General Braxton Bragg burned stores of tobacco and cotton, among other supplies and equipment, before leaving the city, to prevent the Union from seizing them.

The Cape Fear Skyway (also called the Cape Fear Crossing) was a proposed limited access toll road and bridge in North Carolina, United States, that would pass through portions of New Hanover and Brunswick counties.

Sunset Park is a neighborhood south of the Historic Downtown of Wilmington, in New Hanover County, North Carolina, United States. It was designated a national historic district on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

Legion Stadium is a 6,000 seat stadium located in Wilmington, North Carolina. It is part of the Legion Sports Complex and was home of the Wilmington Hammerheads of the Premier Development League. Originally built in the 1930s, the facility received several renovations over the years, including a recent one in 2011. The stadium has 3,500 seats in the grandstand and 2,500 visitor seats. It also has 40 handicapped seats and a 4-acre (16,000 m2) parking lot.

The Legion Sports Complex is a complex mainly used for soccer that is based in Wilmington, North Carolina, United States. It has multiple youth soccer fields where the Super Y-League club from the area plays and a 3,000 seater soccer-specific stadium called Legion Stadium. It is where the Wilmington Hammerheads of the United Soccer League and the W-League play.

Buck Hardee Field at Legion Stadium is a baseball venue in Wilmington, North Carolina, United States. It is home to the Wilmington Sharks of the Coastal Plain League, a collegiate summer baseball league. The stadium, which seats 1,200 with standing room for several hundred more fans, is part of the multi-purpose sports complex known as Legion Stadium, which was also home to the Wilmington Hammerheads professional soccer team.The baseball field's dimensions are 336 ft. down the left field line, 366 ft. to dead center field, and 339 ft. down the right field line.The field is located at 2149 Carolina Beach Road, Wilmington, NC.

William Hooper School is a historic school building located on Mears Street between South 4th and South 5th Streets in Wilmington, New Hanover County, North Carolina. It was designed by Joseph F. Leitner's firm and is described as being in a Classical Revival style. It was built by Wallace & Osterman in 1914. Eliza Meares (1864-1926) was the school's first principal, serving from 1914 to 1925. The school closed in 1984 and in 1998 the building was converted to apartments for the elderly. It is named for William Hooper (1742-1790) of Boston, Massachusetts, who was a representative of North Carolina and signed the Declaration of Independence.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

Cape Fear Community College (CFCC) is a public community college in Wilmington, North Carolina. It enrolls nearly 23,000 students each year. The service area of Cape Fear Community College includes New Hanover and Pender counties with a main campus located in downtown Wilmington and satellite campuses in Castle Hayne, Burgaw, and Surf City.

The Cape Fear Memorial Bridge is a steel vertical-lift bridge in North Carolina, USA. It carries US 17/US 76/US 421 across the Cape Fear River between Brunswick County and New Hanover County. It also carried U.S. Route 74 until that designation was shifted to the Isabel S. Holmes Bridge. It has a lift span that can be raised 135 feet (41 m). The lift span is 408 feet (124 m) long.

Atlantic Reserve Fleet, Wilmington was part of the United States Navy reserve fleets in Wilmington, North Carolina at 34.229479°N 77.982916°W / 34.229479; -77.982916. The reserve fleet was at and overflowed out of the former North Carolina Shipbuilding Company in the dredge out Brunswick River. The ships lined both sides of the Brunswick River. The freshwater of the river made a good spot to store ships. The reserve fleet was opened in 1946 to store the now many surplus ships after World War II. The mothball fleet was mostly cargo ships used in the merchant marine navy. When opened it had mostly cargo ships and a few troop ships. At its peak it had 300 Victory ships and Liberty ships, many that were built at the nearby former North Carolina Shipbuilding Company Shipyard. Some ships in the fleet were reactivated for the Korean War and Vietnam War. Atlantic Reserve Fleet, Wilmington closed in 1962, with the last ship removed in February 27, 1970. The ships in the fleet were either scrapped, used as targets or move to the James River Reserve Fleet and Beaumont Reserve Fleet. SS Dwight W. Morrow was the last ship to depart Atlantic Reserve Fleet, Wilmington, she was scrapped in February 1970.
