Königsee is a town and a municipality in the district of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt, in Thuringia, Germany. It is situated 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) east of Ilmenau, and 35 kilometres (22 mi) south of Erfurt. The present municipality was formed on 31 December 2012 by the merger of the former municipalities Königsee and Rottenbach, under the name Königsee-Rottenbach. On 1 January 2019 the former municipalities Dröbischau and Oberhain were absorbed, and the name was changed to Königsee.

The Oberweißbacher Bergbahn is a German railway in the Thuringian Highland, Thuringia. Since 1922 it connects Obstfelderschmiede (Mellenbach-Glasbach) with the village Lichtenhain, Oberweißbach and Cursdorf. The train consists of 1.351 km broad gauge cable railway and connects to a 2.635 km standard gauge electrified adhesion railway.

To the north of it, on an eminence, rise the fine ruins of the castle of Greifenstein, built by the German king Henry I, and from 1275 to 1583 the seat of a cadet branch of the counts of Schwarzburg.In the nineteenth century, Bad Blankenburg was part of the small principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. Schwarzatal is a town and a municipality in the district Saalfeld-Rudolstadt, in Thuringia, Germany. It was created with effect from 1 January 2019 by the merger of the former municipalities of Mellenbach-Glasbach, Meuselbach-Schwarzmühle and Oberweißbach. The name refers to the river Schwarza.
